Jazz: It's one of the things you can't escape in life, no matter how many face lifts, tummy tucks and Botox remedies one may seek. I bet hitting 40 has brought some things into sharper focus, even if none of us care to admit it? However taxes are another question (you should know). As for death, who knows, liquid Nitrogen may be our salvation, or not? So maybe it ought to be " Getting old is the only certainty in life ".

Quinny:

My motto is : Today is the best day of my life as it is the day I am living right now ... And I still feel good about myself! To quote Funky Fred Wesley:

Dammit! I am somebody!! :D

And as for your quote: "Getting old is the only certainty in life" it was Benjamin Franklin, I think, who said "There are two certain things in life: Taxes will always go up and we are all going to die!" Although my 12-year old son is convinced that by the time he is 40, scientists will have invented a process that will make him live for ever!!!

Default Response to Jazz Pilgrim

Just a response to your message mate about the comments you made about Greg Edwards, with due respect , i have to disagree! :(
As i've already said b4, i listen to his show every week and enjoy it very much and all the tunes he plays etc...
But it amazes me how week in/week out he is constantly slagging off new music in whatever context he sees fit! This does'nt stop me listening to and enjoying his show at all, but to be honest i am amazed how his bosses at Jazz FM let him get away with all the constant slagging off he does! I know if i was his boss i would tell him to seriously pack it in and get on with what he does best without the need for all the constant slagging off! I really do think he has an over inflated opinion of his own self importance and what gives him the right to play judge & jury with modern music? :o
You say that he does play occasional new music here and there, but when he does you can just imagine him biting his lip whilst he's playing it and then when he goes back to playing a disco track etc.. you can sense the relief and happiness in his voice,it really is rediculous!
Just imagine if a modern dj/radio presenter, whose show played new house/garage music in the same way as Greg's show plays disco etc.. just imagine if that presenter spent the best part of his/her radio show constantly slagging off disco music and how rubbish it was compared to today's wonderful new music in the same way as Greg does, vise versa! I can just imagine the uproar there would be from the likes of Greg and people alike him saying, who the hell does that presenter think he/she is and what do they know etc etc..
I cant stress enough how much i do like Greg's show and his music etc... but there is just no need for his slagging off of new music, its unnecessery, unfair and an injustice to quality music that is around today! :D

Wow: You must have sensitive ears. I listened to last week's show and never heard any slagging off at all. Are you sure you're not over stating things a little? That's a mighty big bee you have in your bonnet.

Wow: I think you owe Greg Edwards a public apology here. Tonight, I listened on headphones for 2 and a half hours or more and I didn't hear one put down of today's music. That also goes for last week too.

mmmmmmmmm..........................i only caught the hour of the show between 11-12 (boogie hour) and the only criticisim i heard was of teenagers with fireworks! (there's always something) - but i find it rather odd that he has gone quiet all of a sudden with his criticisms of modern music - not that i am suggesting conspiracy therories or anything like that! :-?
mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm!!!!!!!!!

Anyhow he played two great tunes in that hour that really bounced around my speakers, Toney Lee - Reach up and Loose Ends - Emergency 999 from 1984.

Quinny - you say you listened for two and a half hours, well what about the other half hour? afterall his show is 3 hours long!!!!
Anyhow, if what you say is true regarding him not slagging off modern music - this week and last, then maybe he's having a break, we are all entitled to time off now and again before we get back to routine!

I think that the deal is that most of the older posters here don't have the time or the interest in following today's underground dance scene but I can assure them that theres a lot of really good music coming out, especially in Europe.

Default Wow's list

Wow,
Your list is intriquing as I only recognise one of those tracks. Do you know what labels they're on?
One cd I've recently picked up which I think may appeal to a lot of people here (even Quinny ) is a Japanese import Silver ocean - Lonesome Echo Production on V2 japan. It's deepish house but for all the purists out there it only uses real musicians. Stand out track for me is Sweet Dream (lonesome echo strings version) featuring Byron Stingly. There's also quite a chilled version of "Wishing on a star". The only thing wrong with it is it's a bitch to mix as those bloody live musicians keep speeding up and slowing down!
Also (and I know I'll be deafened by screams of "Sacrilege!") but the bootleg of Gladys' "Bourgie Bourgie" is fantastic.

Default Response to Phyllis Hyman

Hello Phyllis! :o

Well well well! its a pleasant suprise to have someone as famous as yourself on this site! I remember your classic track 'You know how to love me' very well, what a great track that was! :D
Anyhow, yes i have heard the Glady's Knight remix of Bourgie Bourgie-i heard it the other week funnily enough and thought it was really good! as you say and i quite agree, no doubt alot of the soul/disco obsessives on here will be screaming blue murder and moaning on about how it's an insult to the original etc...
But regardless of all that nonsense, i thought it was really good and well updated/remixed for today's club sound!

Default Response to rjosk

Well said rjosk! i could'nt agree more! :D
There is alot of quality out there today, the only difference i feel is that it is all not as mainstream as it used to be back in the days of disco etc.. however, that quality is still out there, has never not been there and will always be there!
The real quality in my opinion today, is coming out of the U.S.A!
The underground soulful house & garage scene in the U.S.A really is in a league of its own and could easily hold its own against the older stuff! That is not to say that i am not a fan of the older stuff, coz i am,very much indeed and collect/buy tons of the older stuff!
Maybe it is a generation thing, who knows? weather it be music or anything else, the older generation will always think that there era was better than the current generation and vise versa! I suppose its an argument that will run & run for ever!
However if i can be a fan of both the old & new then anyone can!
