Disco1999,

I don't know a lot of your choices, but you listed one record I HATE and to me, exemplefies what went wrong with dance music in the '90's:

"JAMES BROWN IS DEAD" by L.A. Style.

The "one-phrase = total lyric" song really irked the hell out of me. Just my pet peeve, I guess.

It depends which version you're talking about. Of course there are dozens, but the only three that matter are the original instrumental, the rap remix (same as original, but with rap that explains that JB is not dead), and the "re-re-mix" which is a complete reconstruction, and is actually quite nice.

It was years before I realized that the sample in that song is of David Letterman.

Here are some of my fave 90s tunes:

Blackbox: Everybody Everybody/I Don't Know Anybody Else/Ride On Time/Strike It Up
KLF: What Time Is Love/3AM Eternal/Last Train To Trancentral
LFO: LFO
Jaydee: Plastic Dreams
Jam & Spoon: Stella
Moby: Go
NJoi: Mindflux
The Bucketheads: The Bomb (the sane 8-minute edit, not the ridiculous original 15-minute version!)
THK: Feels So Good
Hope: Treefrog (instrumental versions)
Seefeel: Time To Find Me
Aphex Twin: Digeridoo
Jiri.Ceiver: Loom 1
Nicolette: No Government (especially the awesome Biosphere remix!)
The Grid: Heartbeat
DJ Shadow: Midnight In A Perfect World
State Of Grace: Pacific Motion (album)

Graham,

You're telling me that David Letterman is the guy saying "James Brown Is Dead"???!!!

In what context was that statement originally said?

I never heard any similarity in that announcer voice & Letterman's...BUT maybe I better listen again. Oh, yes, of course, I have it!!!!

During the nineties many latino artists got more international exposure, they also "crossedover" to Anglo audiences. Latinos experienced first hand acceptance via dance clubs, that's why I'm now coming up with ten latino favorites of the nineties:
1. Locomia, by Locomia
2. Suavemente, by Elvis Crespo
3. Tres Deseos/Tradicion, by Gloria Estefan
4. Boriqua Anthem, by C&C Music Factory feat. El General and Wepaman
5. Maria, by Ricky Martin
6. L.O.V.E, by Thalia
7. Estoy Aqui, by Shakira
8. Sopa de Caracol, by Banda Blanca
9. Magdalenha, by Sergio Mendes
10.Esta Pegao/El Tiburon, by Proyecto Uno

Special mention to "Macarena", by Los del Rio...just kiddin'
Hopefully everything will be alright with Laura Bozzo...Latin America needs valuable people like her.
Have a Disco Life.

This topic is very close to my heart as I still buy what I like, whether it is re-issue stuff or new.

Nineties stuff I like:

- anything by Drizabone (either under their own name or as producers)
- same for D'Influence
- all remixes that came out in the 90's by Def Mix, especially "Unbreak my heart", "Power of love", "Can I touch you there" and "Ain't no stoppin' us now" (guess the artists!)
- C&C Music Factory - all tracks
- The Chimes - Heaven (Morales mix), 1-2-3
- Robin S - all tracks
- Soul II Soul - all tracks
- Lisa Stansfield - all tracks
- Give into the rhythm (album and 12"'s from album) - Arthur Baker
- Adeva - all tracks
- Alison Limerick - especially "Where love lives" but all others, too
- Jam/Lewis productions for Cherelle, Alexander O'Neal, Janet Jackson, Karyn White, Sounds Of Blackness
- Club 69 - all tracks
- Ain't no man - Dina Carroll
- Brand New Heavies - all tracks
- Rain falls (12") - Frankie Knuckles
- The program (all cuts) - David Morales

Shit, I have only reached 1993...

More later?

I like Drizabone's "Real Love" and also their remix of "Change" by Lisa Stansfield.

I liked that one not for what it said, but for the music concepts, new sounds. I don't hate James Brown, if they changed the lyrics to: "The roses are red" I would still appreciate this one.

I understand that in mid 90's, there was some madness added to a few dance tracks. Lyrics like:
"Michael Jackson have been shot dead in front of a live studio audience", etc.

There aren't that many 90s dance songs that I like, but here are a few that I do:

"Never Give Up On The Good Times" - Spice Girls
"Anticipating" - Britney Spears
"Canned Heat" - Jamiroquai
"Who Do You Think You Are" - Spice Girls
"Cosmic Girl" - Jamiroquai
"You Can Do It" - No Doubt
"Main Vein" - Jamiroquai

I admit that most of my favorite 90s artists are rock-oriented (Nirvana, Korn, Slipknot, etc.).

OK, add these to my list:

-All around the world (Lisa Stansfield)
-Regret (New Order)
-Crazy (Seal)
-The Rockafeller Skank (Fatboy Slim)
-Praise you (same)
-The child (Alex Gopher)

Of course I can't mention Prince records, that would be too tough to choose! Even as the nineties were not his best time...

Guille: save that list for a new topic, it's too good! I LOL when I read Loco Mia, I could not believe someone here knows them! One of the most bizarre acts of the decade! Please explain the other fellas about them, I don't remember how to say "abanico" in English...
Yes, a Latin disco topic is required!
