I have that "I Will Survive" 45. I forgot it was the "B" side. I don't even remember playing Substitute.

I haven't had a chance to read the interview yet (this weekend I will)...BUT

I recently found a 12" extended mix of just "Substitute" (8:29) on BOTH sides of the 12" single. I think this is a good record--coulda been a hit a few years earlier circa 1974-1977, maybe. Sounds like Three Degrees Philly Soul or Motown Supremes to me. It's always maligned as the dud that Polydor was pushing instead of "I Will Survive"--BUT I LIKE IT!!!!!

Marky,

You better double check and play BOTH sides of that record because one may be "I Will Survive." A number of them were printed in error as "Substitute" on both sides. I still have one like this. I agree that it's a nice "pop-like" song and may have done better if released a little earlier.

Hi Bernie,

I actually DID play both sides...... and "Substitute" was on both.

Is this rare????

Should I have my eye on an auction on E-bay????

Bernie,

Thanks to you and Ms. Gaynor for a great interview. Can't believe I never knew this lady was from Newark, NJ, the land of Cissy, Whitney, Dionne & Dee Dee. "Old Blues Eyes" too, I believe.

I also didn't know, or don't remember, that stage accident. I'm glad she fought her way back. I do remember us dj's laughing about Polydor making "I Will Survive" the 'B' side. Wrooong. (Marky, my promo 12" also has "Substitute" on both sides.) Also remember my 7" of "Honey Bee" on Columbia and my lp on MGM. I was amazed that so many people didn't hear the difference in the intro's. Glad to have her back and I will most definitely be linking from here to purchase the CD.

Thanks, again, for a great read. And man, she is looking GOOOOOD on that cover!

Nope, that's not the one. The copy I have has "Substitute" listed on both sides, but when you play one of the sides it's "I Will Survive." I had to mark the label so I would know which side was which, but when I spoke to Ms. Gaynor she said I shouldn't have since it is probably rare. Oh well...

In 1978 a band called "Clout" had a great hit with "substitute". It was number one in New Zealand, Australia, Germany, France, Belgium, Holland and South Africa.

I remember receiving that original 12" in the mail ("Substitute" A side/"I Will Survive" B side)...still have it.

I listened to the A side as that was the one that they were touting and I tossed it into my leftover bin - I don't remember playing "Survive" as I know now that it would have caught my ear...but you can't blmae me for up until that point, for about two years, Gloria's output was pretty dismal and I was so big on Donna and others by then, that I didn't expect any big whoop to be coming out of Gloria....it wasn't until I heard it at Uncle Charlie's (all you homos will know what I am talking about) that I was aware of what I almost threw away.....Never made that mistake again.....!
