    Betty Davis

I recall an old thread regarding Funkiest Groove Delivered by a female. So tonight while doing a little work on my collection I came across my old lp Nasty Gal by Betty Davis and put it on and began listening to it. I had completely forgotten how bad, kick ass, get down and dirty, in your face raw funk this girl was.I kept cranking up the volume till my wife came downstairs thinking I had gone crazy. From the opening Nasty Gal cut to The Lone Ranger closing she is relentless in delivering FUNK as raw, bare and unpolished as it was meant to be. Favourite cuts are F.U.N.K., Nasty Gal and Talkin Trash I now need to go out and dig up her previous two other LP's Betty Davis and They Say I'm Different.

One reviewer summed her up perfectly
"Betty Mabry Davis doesn't sing. She singes. She leaps off the page, tears into your face, rips scars with her growls, screeches and hollers. She is equal parts terror, fury and seduction mixed, shaken and uncorked, the force of a woman scorned who doesn't miss love's passing but mocks it, daring it to cross her threshold again."

    From Miles Davis Autobiography

"”If Betty were singing today she be something like Madonna, something like Prince, only as a woman. She was the beginning of all that when she was singing as Betty Davis.”

Betty was amazing! All three of her albums are just the ultimate in pure, raw, blistering, kick-ass funk.. Her delivery, the music, everything.. IMO, quite possibly the funkiest female out there..

I wasn't totally familiar with her until I got a CD of hers earlier this year called "This Is It!" which contains all three of her albums.. Needless to say, that one stayed in my stereo for a while :)
