    Donna Summer Two- sided valentine

    *****

I have an interesting Donna Summer 12" ..or is this an LP ? .... that I pulled off the shelf today .........

It's curious because it has " LOVE TO LOVE YOU BABY " (16: 50) on one side and "TRY ME , I KNOW WE CAN MAKE IT" (17:55) on the other.... two biggies on one disk ....
It has a big heart on a pink background fror its cover ..and it looks as though it's intended to be a valentine .... It says .... 'by DONNA SUMMER "The First Lady Of Love" ' :)
The cover then lifts sideways like opening a Valentine card and inside this inner part has in large type face the lyrics for "LOVE TO LOVE YOU BABY " ............not the cheapest of packaging ....

It doesn't appear to be a promo .... yet this as a commercial release seems very counter Casablanca ....why would they release the best from two albums compressed onto this one ..... especially if this was priced as a 12" ?

    I have this too.

I bought it as a cut-out in 1978 or 1979 and always assumed that it was an LP, not a 12 inch.

I know these 2 songs appeared on earlier LPs, but I think the versions on this release are longer.

I haven't looked at my copy in years, but I recall that the Casablanca label here doesn't contain the "Filmworks" logo.

It does have great sleeve art.

Is this record considered a rarity?

Oh, this is maddening because I have this release but I can't find it and, for some odd reason, it's not on my Casablanca list. It *is* a beautiful gatefold sleeve, though, isn't it?

In any case, it's not super-rare, but it's probably one that collectors don't want to part with so you probably won't find it on eBay with ease. It was issued commercially.

To determine if it's considered a 12" or an LP, check the label. Casablanca's 12" singles (in the United States anyway) used the code NBD + numbers and the LPs used the code NBLP + numbers. There are exceptions (such as the promo sampler album "Return to Casablanca" which has an NBD code.) Promo releases added the letters DJ after the numbers.

I saw the Donna Summer record but didn't buy it

because I already had the 2 songs on other releases. It looked like a promo to me. On the same subject, I have a promo copy of the "Thank God It's Friday" soundtrack that has edits of each and every song, plus narration, on a single album. The sound quality is very bad because there's so much music crammed onto a single disc, but I hope it'll be valuable one day. I sure wish they'd left off the narration, too....And on the subject of Casablanca promos, the 12" promo of Cher's "Wasn't It Good?" is incredible. So much brighter and cleaner than the version included on the "Take Me Home" album. Cher also does a tiny little simulated orgasm on the song, perhaps inspired by Donna's performance on "Love to Love You". And I'll bet many of you wouldn't believe that I got many classic Casablanca albums(as well as disco albums on other labels) absolutely free from a record store in Berkeley that wanted to get rid of their stock so they could close. They posted a sign in their window inviting people to "back up a truck to the store's entrance and take as much as you can carry". Don't get excited though, this was 10 years ago.

The Donna Summer record is definitely NOT a promo.

I recall I paid $4.99 for it back in the day at a legit record store.

And lucky you with all those Casablanca LPs. Did you take them up on their offer and use your truck???

I've seen this a couple of times in my travels. It's considered an LP (note that the catalog # is NBLP 7###) and is really just a compilation of her two side-long tracks. It's not that common, since this came out a couple of years after the original LPs, and as these songs were no longer on the charts, so there wasn't that much demand for it. The songs are identical to the LP versions AFAIK.

here is the stock # :

    --- NBLP 7041 ---

You're right DiscoKidd .... no "filmworks" on the label .....

That's a dream come true OSF .... wish I'd happpened by .... I've only become interested in vinyl again this year .. and am shocked that the stores are all gone ... :(

BTW my copy of this odd Donna Summer valentine album ... I picked up in 1996 ( it was released in 1976) ... also at a store trying to weed out its vinyl ... the price sticker (still on it) reads .... 23 cents !
It is a cut-out and I'd describe it's condition as mint ..... so next to free ... 23 cents ... is not bad ! :D

Nope, Casablanca's 12" singles had a different numbering, 99% of them came in generic sleeves, and they were cheaper, too. This one was priced and sold as an LP.

The "and Filmworks" was added to the design in late 76 or early 77.

    to DiscoKidd

no, but only because I didn't own a truck. But I went everyday after work and carried off as many as I could on my motorcycle. And I knew, I KNEW one day those albums would be worth money if I held on to them long enough. Now there are guys on other websites who'd like copies of my albums by Munich Machine ("Get On the Funk Train" seems suddenly popular these days!), Giorgio and Chris ("Love's In You, Love's In Me"), Giorgio Moroder ("Nights in White Satin") and Alec Costandinos ("Trocadero Lemon Blue" Soundtrack). But they seem kind of inflexible about a reciprocal arrangement. I also picked up treasured albums by Paul Sabu, the Ritchie Family, Patrick Juvet, Double Exposure, Aurra and many others....

    Hi all.

Thanks everyone for finally solving this quandry.

I always thought it was an LP.

Of course I had to go and find mine too. Mine still has the shrink wrap on it. The price sticker says "Wee Three Records" (RIP) with a price of $3.99. There is a drill hole in the lower right corner.

I'd love to have that "TGIF" record too!!!
