Just wondering if anyone else has seen Cher's current concert tour...?
I saw her Friday night and the show is quite a spectacle! Our members will be especially interested to hear that she does several of her neo-disco numbers, including that disco throwback "Strong Enough" ("I Will Survive" for the '90s) and "Believe," her finale. Best of all, "Take Me Home" is a big production number, with the diva and her dancers all dressed in bright red for a line dance straight out of Saturday Night Fever.
I cheered when she dissed Bratney and J. Blo ("Just try to top this, bitches!" or something to that effect) and cheered even louder during the retrospective of her film career over the closeups of her Mask costar Sam Elliott. Hello, Marky...?
The diversity of her audience is really fascinating: from teens to grandparents, lots of single women and straight couples (in many of which the men looked bored!) and--surprise!--loads of gay guys. (In fact, both Cher and opening act Cyndi Lauper acknowledged all the gay guys in the audience; Cyndi even sang "True Colors" draped in a rainbow flag.)
I shouldn't have been surprised, I guess, but during the retrospective of her TV career that prefaced the medley of "Dark Lady/Half-Breed/Gypsies, Tramps and Thieves," a lot of the younger people went to the bathroom, etc. This was the high point of the show for me (oh, the memories--Bette Midler, Racquel Welch, Liberace!), but they were there just to hear "Believe." And a lot of the older people really grooved to "All I Really Wanna Do," but seemed clueless about newer songs like "A Song for the Lonely."
Tickets were kind of pricey, but considering that there are very few concerts (like, none!) that I care to see among the hundreds coming through Pittsburgh this summer, I think it was money well spent.
