    Blax:

Glad to hear you dug most of the list. I'm surprised you do not know 'It's a shame by The Spinners as it is a definite classic of mid-seventies Soul sound. 'Always there' by Side Effect and 'Love Injection' by Trussell are two club "classics" from the late '70's early '80's sound which I recommend highly as they are both fantastic and very danceable. I know when you hear them you may either remember them or fall in love with them right away. By the way, I love 'Funkentelechy' more than any other Parliament song so Zeca and I have the same taste. Always a pleasure discussing music with you my friend. Thanks for the comments.

That's the beautiful thing about classics my friend, no matter how old you get when you listen to them it takes back to a younger you. Besides Blax, we're not getting older, just better with time. Like these songs, when I play them they sound just as good if not better than they did 20 to 25 years ago. I'd like to think we're the same, just as good, if not better!

First of all, Sammy, another excellent night!
You really do bring the old memories back with your choices!

"We Came To Play" was the first Tower of Power track I ever heard of theirs, and I haven't heard it IN AGES!

I love that Instant Funk track "Cryin'" as you know. In fact I love all of Instant Funk's stuff!

I do remember Trussel only too well, as it was a massive club hit in England. (a great favourite with the Pilgrims ...) I also recall that it made the Top 50 in the national pop charts ...

"Awlays There" is one of my favourite songs/tunes! I have versions of it by:
Ronnie Laws - the original from an OUTSTANDING FUSION LP
Side Effect - another massive track
Willie Bobo - the best version IMHO - a legendary track for the Jazz Pilgrims - I've got the original and the remix ...
    Light Of The World
and I've heard the Incognito version
In fact, jazz-fusion was always well-loved in the English clubs alongside the mainstream disco.

Pareliament's Funkentelechy vs the Placebo Syndrome. What more can I say? Pure FUNK at its best ...

Jimmy "Bo" Horne - is it in. Ooh, Sammy, another one to test the old memory buds, and to pull at the heartstrings. Haven't heard it for AGES either! Good memories!!

And I can't recall THAT Spinners track either!! You got both Blax and myself foxed with that one!!!

And as for your slowies - haven't heard any of those except the Blackbyrds track! But I bet they're all right!!

So I bet another good night was had by all at the Larry Holmes Ringside last Friday!!

If it moves - funk it!!

I'm surprised you guys don't know "It's A Shame" by the Spinners.

It was on Motown; released in 1970; charted #4 R&B, #14 Pop; written by Lee Garrett, Stevie Wonder & Syreeta Wright

Produced by Stevie Wonder (plays piano, bass, drums & did horn arrangement).

"It's a sha-ame, the way you mess around with your man, It's a sha-ame, the way you hurt me...."

This was 2 years before The Spinners would hook up with Thom Bell and become superstars when "I'll Be Around" was released in summer, 1972.

The song was also sampled and the chorus sung in "It's a Shame (My Sister)" by female rapper Monie Love in the summer of 1991.

The Spinners' version is included in their 2 disc set "One of a Kind Love Affair: Anthology" and is also in the Rhino compilation :"Soul Hits of the '70's: Didn't It Blow Your Mind, Vol 3".

Check it out. Smooth Motown Pop/Soul at it's best.

Thanks Marky for your info. I had a listen to the track just now and no! I don't remember the Spinners version! What a great track it is though! Thanks Sammy for opening my eyes to this one!

According to my little bit of research, it was also a Top 20 hit here in the UK. I would have been about 9 years old - but that is no excuse for not knowing such a great record. Their 1972 stuff, "I'll Be Around" etc is very familiar to me...

Funnily enough, I recall the Monie Love version in 1991 very clearly - probably becuase it was more soulful than your average rap record...

Likewise, Marky, I was fascinated to read in your post in the thread "Rock/RnB Classics That Were Discofied" that there was a 1963
version of Bruce Johnson's "Pipleline" by the Chantays. I've never heard of it!! I had no idea that a Sixties version ever existed! I must try and get hold of a copy of it to listen to!!

For me, this is what the Board is all about!! Thanks, Folks!

    Jazz:

Thank you for your comments my friend. Like visiting Brazil, I would love to visit London someday because I know the music scene there is first rate. The Pilgrims seem to know how to have a good time and better yet know what music to dance to. I'm glad you liked 'It's a shame' after you listened to it. Funny how we sometimes assume certain tracks are a given around the world.

    Ru:

My friend in Montreal, I'm happy you enjoyed the playlist. Trust me, it was just as fun for me to play it. As for 'Crying' by Instant Funk, it is off their first LP ('79)which features 'I got my mind made up'. 'Bodyshine' is also a great song which I featured in a previous happy hour playlist in this forum. So I guess you can tell, like Jazz Pilgrim, I also dig Instant Funk very much. Looking forward to more great music talk.

I hope you are able to make it over The Atlantic one day to good old London Town, my friend! You would be very welcome !!!

London is a great city - you go into town these days and the whole place is buzzing - 24-7!! London is arguably the most cosmopolitan city in the world, and I read that it has an even greater choice of international cuisine than NY!

I think that because we have always had closer links to the USA than other countries in Europe, our soul/funk music scene has always leaned heavily towards that in the US. There has always been a great choice of soul music clubs and record shops in London - going way back to the Sixties. During the late Seventies and early Eighties, during the Disco era, there were so many shops selling American import soul, that it was easy to get hold of. I bought loads of it.. And with the choice of second hand record shops in London today, you would have an absolute ball picking out vinyl stuff!! There are still clubs in London specializing in playing Seventies disco/soul music, some commercial and so, happily, playing the underground sounds that we love so much eg "Starsky and Hutch". Also, there are still some great soul/funk/disco music shows on the radio in London playng all the old 70's stuff. London is still HIP!!

In fact, London is the best city in the world !!  But I would say that, wouldn't I??

Hey, Blax, even the Queen likes Roy Ayers !!!

But, a word of warning!! The weather is CRAP!!!

Thanks for the invite my friend. After what you've told me about London I have to find my way there someday. The weather is a small thing in comparison to the music. I know this much, visiting Brazil and London is something I have to do in my lifetime. Partying with the Senhores de Groove and the Jazz Pilgrims to music I love from the '70's, sounds like heaven to me. I cannot imagine you, Blax and myself in the same room with music at hand. We'd take turns at the wheels trying to outdo each other with another blast from the past, all the while enjoying everything that is being played. Add some great people and spirits and it sounds like I'm in heaven.
