Though it took place at The Hercules, a notorious back room club for gentlemen only in Helsinki, I noticed a substantial amount of (real) women too at the Baccara concert yesterday. One girl even wore an appropriate Halston-style satin catsuit. Then again, as was stated in a post by Graham Start, the group's 1st lp still ranks 5th at the all-time best sellers list in Finland. Yes, we love our cheese here. The concert was superb of course, what else could it possibly be? Mayte Mateos glittered and flamencoed an stroked the poses like the true Eurodisco Icon she is, total diva delirium. The seemingly ever changing other woman in the duo - whoever she was this time - did okay, considering her broken ankle. After the first couple of anthems her hilarious "I'm in a hell of a pain here for ****'s sake" expression vanished and she was really wriggling up there in her tight dress, looking like Charo on acid, sweat flying, her massive bleached hairdo flopping over her face. The crowd loved every song and even I who seldom drink drank like a fish till I was high (2 glasses of of cider) and I who seldom dance danced like a gipsy. - Speaking of Charo, dj Sami M spinned her "Love Boat" track prior to showtime, and it was wonderful to see it go down very well, hands in the air. One local mini-celebrity, a dreadful cheap drag queen, almost fell down from her heels. Among the other great tunes Sami played were the French version of "Flashdance" by Sylvie Vartan, "Besame Mucho" by Dalida and "Romeo and Juliet" by A.R.C - now THAT sounded good thru the mighty sound system of the Hercules!

Mayte Mateos and Maria Mendoza parted their ways some 20 years ago and haven't spoken since. So, what you saw could have been either the only true Baccara with Mayte - who was the lead vocalist on the three 70's lps - or the less glamorous one with Maria. Then of course there is the totally fake duo consisting of 2 Russian women who managed to fool crowds in London a year or so ago.... 8)
