    Disco Ballads?

Is there a such thing as a "disco ballad"? If not, then what would you classify these songs as? Do you have any other song examples?

    1) "How Deep Is Your Love" - The Bee Gees

    2) "Please Don't Go" and "Boogie Shoes" - KC & The Sunshine Band

    3) "Winter Melody" - Donna Summer

    4) "Disco Lady" - Johnnie Taylor

    5) "Got To Be Real" - Cheryl Lynn

    6) "All Right All Night" - The Ritchie Family

    7) "Love Serenade" - Barry White

    8) "Just To Be Close To You" - The Commodores

Some weird choices for ballads among this lot. Do you know what a ballad is, I wonder? Boogie Shoes, Disco Lady and Got To Be Real were all dancers in my necks of the wood.

Pick any soul ballad from the era and it was probably played in a disco somewhere. Whether or not Disco ballads exist.......ummmm, I'm not sure.

    Marcio,
    pepper1,

Both of you have me really :-? confused. Do you consider the songs you listed ballads? By definition, a ballad is a "slow, romantic song". What gives? Do you want 'disco ballad' to have a whole new meaning?

As over-played as it is, one can't forget the excellent "Always and Forever" by Heatwave."

Another nice Disco ballad is "There For Me" by La Bionda.

I am meaning the words to a disco song. They have alot of meaning in the song. I have NEVER been to a "disco" where they play any slow romantic songs. The 2 songs I mentioned...oh, all the LOVE!!!

Wow! I didn't realize there would be many responses! I believe that a "disco balled" would have a much slower BPM along with typical instruments used for disco music whether it would be bass or strings. I would also list "Reunited" by Peaches & Herb and "Emotion" by Samantha Sang as "disco ballads". The songs "Boogie Shoes", "Disco Lady", and "Got To Be Real" seem to have a slower BPM than typical disco songs.

Thus, all the songs mentioned above would fit in to any disco when the DJ would like to slow things down and give everyone time to catch their breath from boogieing!

Would you call these songs "disco ballads"?

    1) Too Much Heaven - The Bee Gees

    2) Q - The Brothers Johnson

    3) Being With You - Smokie Robinson

    4) Love Ballad - L. T. D.

I think the song "Too Hot" by Kool and the Gang would qualify as both a ballad and disco.

Also, what about "Float On" by the Floaters and "I Can't Stand the Rain" by Eruption. I think these two songs would qualify as both and both were played in discos.

I've never seen such a strange group of nominations for ballads in all my life!!!!! Where are your brains, guys?

Ballads are S L O WWWWWWWWWWW tracks (like 30 BPM - maybe 100 BPM in some very rare examples). They're tracks to snuggle up close to somebody, to grind to, to act as an appetiser to lurve or carnal knowledge. 8) :D

    Hey Quinny,
Is it that they are just messing with ya on purpose or is it that some of these folks are redefining what a ballad is? :o
