I'm just curious, what do people think of this song?- in particular the extended version.

Also, what was the reaction to this song when it was released?

    Welcome!

When this song was released, it received a lot of airplay on the radio and clubs.

In New York City, Another Man - Barbara Mason is still appealing to hear in the clubs after not being heard for years.

I mentioned my feelings about this song in an unrelated post quite a while ago...

I think it's important to remember that this song was recorded in the pre-PC era. But I can get a laugh from non-mean-spirited gay jokes as much as the next guy; for example, I was never offended by the "Men On..." skits on In Living Color. Don't we all know queens like Blaine and Antoine?! So the singer's rap about her husband swishing (or "switching," as she says) didn't bother me at all. And I think her comment about the two men holding hands on Market Street was proud and positive.

But having said all that, I'm not thrilled that the song has the husband wearing his wife's clothes. Very few gay men actually cross-dress, you know, so why reinforce that stereotype for the general public? And I was and am still infuriated that she refers to her husband's homosexuality as "a genetic DEFECT." Sorry, but I don't feel defective. (Everything on me works very well, thanks! )

And it's even more frustrating that "Another Man" was released by West End Records. Was Mel Cheren asleep when this lyric was recorded?!

OK, I'll get down off my soapbox now.

Gee, too bad Fantom-ass is no longer with us. He would have loved this post!

Interesting take Jeff. I always liked the song because I thought it was so funny. I never really considered the lyrics the way you did. Hey, I never said I was the sharpest tool in the shed. It just dawned on me when you said pre-PC, you weren't talking about computers. Anyway, I am interested to read how other gay men felt about this song.

    Paul--

I have to admit that it never occurred to me that "PC" also means "personal computer"! I was talking about pre-politically correct (political correctness?), of course. It's all in your frame of reference, I guess.

There was a bit of a backlash at the time towards this song and IRT's "Watch The Closing Doors" for perceived stereotypes in the lyrics.

Despite some of the lyric content that Jeff H. highlighted, the song was well received in the gay clubs I worked. I think most took in the "just for fun" spirit it was intended.

To be honest, I never got that deep into the lyrics of the song. Everytime I heard her say "Another man is stealing my time/Another man is stealing mine", I would just howl. You know, 'straight people... uh, huh'. I do think if I had really picked up on that "genetic defect" (I mean, I heard her singing it, it just didn't set me off back then) I might have passed on the song.

I remember the song our Goddess mentions --- "Watch the Closing Doors". NEVER TOUCHED MY PLATTER!

"Watch The Closing Doors" is new to me. Other than its stereotyping, do you consider the song anti-gay or just plain tacky??

I agree with Jeff H on this one. It's too bad because I LOVE the song but the ''defect'' line bothers me...as well as the following ''not when he was created but somewhere down the line something went wrong''. ugh...!! Very uncomfortable lyrics to say the least.
The cross dressing comment doesn't bother me much I can see where that would get by during that time without seeming too offensive.

I understand this was the pre-pc era but jeez I would think that SOMEONE at the record company would understand a large part of the audince they were catering to was gay and might see it as a bit offensive!! Maybe I'm a little naive about that particular time..

IRT is another one although to me that just seemed like run-of-the-mill comments for 1984(what I remember of 1984 anyway..)

    my .2 cents.

You're absolutely correct, my Borough Mate.

There was a bit of a backlash when IRT - Watch the closing doors was released. The stereotypes within its lyrics provided mass opinions.

Hi Everybody! IRT's "Watch the Closing Doors" was a track that described a trip on the No.1 Local subway line from South Ferry to 137th Street. I actually didn't have a big problem with the song except for the Christopher Street segment ("where all the Boysss go"). I used to program the instrumental track, in case anyone had a problem with the vocal version.
There was another rather inept song about the subway entitled "The MTA" during this time which contained such pithy lyrics as "...now you know, there's no escape, from robbery, and sometimes rape..." while a female sings "Onnn theeee M-T-AAAA!" loud and off-key. Terrible song.
As for the Mason song, I wasn't a great fan of the song, and found the lyrics a bit offensive, so I never bothered with it.

For me, it's just tacky and stupid. I couldn't and wouldn't deal with that lisping bullshit. What is bothering me now is that I obviously really didn't listen to "Another Man". I know I was probably having one too many Scotch's and Water. I can't figure out how Mel Cheren let this one get past the door without some editing.

Re: Barbara Mason - Another Man

Just noticed this post from over four years ago ! I never heard or heard of 'Watch The Closing Doors' but 'Another Man' has to be one of those love/hate songs for me...funny in one way and well...as Nick Nack says just a bit tacky (in the wrong way) in another. I have an answer record somewhere by 'Toute Sweet' which is very bad and lisping.
