AWOL is a military term meaning ABSENT WITHOUT LEAVE. In other words, if you're not where you're supposed to be while in the military, they can arrest your ass. You have to get permission to go somewhere other than where your 'orders' send you. If permission is given, you're on LEAVE. If not, and you still go, you are AWOL.
