How did the gay audience here react to these movies? I saw the first one many moons ago and I thought it was funny. The American version, The Birdcage with Robin Williams was almost as funny.

I remember a friend taking my lover and I to see the original (subtitled) version when it was first released. We were on the upper East Side of NYC in a relatively small theater and the people were howling. It was so funny it was like you were hearing it instead of reading it. All of our friends reacted positively to the movie. A great comedy.
When they became available for home purchase we got both the dubbed and subtitled versions. We also own Birdcage and although I like it because it's "grander" and doesn't look like it was shot in one room, I'll still take the two original actors any day.
I neglected to mention... don't bother with La Cage Aux Folles II. Just a vehicle to try and make some money.

I'm glad you mentioned La Cage Aux Folles II because it was on the other night and I missed the beginning and I couldn't stay up to watch the rest of it. I guess I didn't miss anything.
