TELEMACH ITS BARBARA ACKLIN-AM I THE SAME GIRL
Hi
Could you tell me the name of the band in Joss Stone background-sampling in Dont Cha Wanna raide. I know the song (its from the seventies) but i forgat the name of the band or the artist.
TELEMACH ITS BARBARA ACKLIN-AM I THE SAME GIRL
But surely it's from something else. I started thinking Main Ingredient or Cliff Nobles, but then it came to me. Young-Holt Unlimited - Soulful Strut.
Wasn't Barbara's song 'nicked' from that?
From the liner notes of The Complete Barbara Acklin On Brunswick Records:Originally Written by QUINNY
The tale of Acklin's "Am I The Same Girl" is worth recounting, not only as it had a crucial bearing on her success (or otherwise) with that song, but also as an example of how Brunswick succeeded in extracting the most commercial value from a great backing track.
Basically, Barbara cut her (excellent) version of a fine Eugene Record pop/soul song (that would later be covered by Dusty Springfield and, some twenty years later, by 80's British Pop combo, Swing Out Sister). The Brunswick powers-that-be took the backing track (i.e., sans Acklin's coruscating vocal), and overlaid an (admittedly) funky piano instrumental solo, and retitled the whole shebang "Soulful Strut". It was a sizeable hit for Young-Holt Unlimited --- reaching No. 3 in both the Billboard R&B and Pop listings in November 1968 (to add insult to injury, none of the band actually played on it!) The experience rankled Acklin, as her vocal version only made the comparatively lowly slot of No. 33 R&B and No. 79 Pop in February of the following year, although her subsequent comments seem to be somewhat tempered by the passage of time and (perhaps) a desire to be even-handed: "I had originally recorded the record, and they took my voice off and added a piano. Most people do not know that. I was pretty ticked off about that, but you know, that's what happens. Of course the earlier release of 'Soulful Strut' completely undercut the sales of 'Am I The Same Girl'. They told me mine did better overseas that it did in the United States."
Just shows ya what shenanigans can go on in the wonderful world of the record biz.
At least I made the connection, if only for the completely wrong reasons.
brunswick did a bit of this along with young holt they also did it with lionel hampton that might sound like its gonna be terrible but its not, there was a great early 70s album the best cut that got played where i clubbed was a version of tyrone davies's 'there it is' [also a 7"] ,vocals replaced by vibes ,really nice 8)
