Aneka is a very interesting thing because we don't know if Aneka is the name of the vocalist or the name of the band who sang the 1981 hit "Japanese Boy" :) .
Taken from my "Guinness Book of Number One Hits" (yes pop pickers, "Japanese Boy" made it to #1 in the pop charts in the UK!) :o
"Scottish folk singer Mary Sandeman was a respected traditional vocalist who sang with the Scottish Fiddle Orchestra. She felt she'd like the thrill of having a hit record but didn't want to do it under her own name. She had taught herself to sing in Gaelic; pretending she was Japanese for a few minutes was by comparison easy.
Having recorded "Japanese boy", Sandeman needed an oriental-sounding pseudonym. She looked through the Edinburgh phone book and found Anika. Rather than risk upsetting the real Anika, she changed the middle vowel and became Aneka. She wore a kimono and Japanese wig on Top of the pops to further the illusion.
After this one hit, she returned to performing Gaelic music."
So the answer to your question is that it is a made up name that wasn't her own, and that there was no band (it was simply a production number).![]()
