What would you consider Disco's Anthem. It may not be the best song but was popular in clubs, on the radio, etc. I go with Aint No Stopping Us Now. Others that are up there in my view but maybe I'm biased against are, I Will Survive, Ring My Bell, YMCA and Hot Stuff.
    Find them and destroy them!

Hmmm...so many things to choose from, but off the top of my head...

    Get Down Tonight

    Where The Happy People Go

    Good Times

    Boogie Nights

    Best Disco In Town

Or something with "Dance" in the title:

    Dance, Dance, Dance

    Dance, Disco Heat

    Dancin' The Night Away

    Haven't Stopped Dancing Yet or

    Last Dance

    Lots more to choose from...

    "Lost inside adorable illusion...."

    Last Dance

I'd probably have to go with Donna's version of this one, even though it's not one of my faves from her. It's both black, straight, female, (Donna) and white, gay, and male (Jabara) all at once. And it was made for a movie that was made soley to sell Casablanca product, so it's one of the ultimate disco creations

I also really like the fact that this one's got a lot more to it than what you'd expect. Behind the façade of the happy and over-the-top production, this is actually a rather depressing song about loneliness and desperation.

    Rappers Delight

    Aint no stopping us now

    Heartbeat

    I specialize in love

I'm caught up in one night love affair

    spank

these are a few i could think of......

You're so right! I always thought the song captured that rather depressing moment when you realised the disco was closing ih half an hour, and you'd be leaving ON YOUR OWN!

Of course, I only went to such places for the music and, of course, I'm a liar!!

My anthem is CHIC's "Good Times". Don't know why but this is the track that, in my opinion, one should choose to explain what disco has been...

Everytime there is a program or commercial

relating to disco, these songs are used to

    define that era(70's):

    1.I Will Survive

    2.YMCA

    3.Shame

4.Disco Inferno/Where the Happy People Go

    5.Last Dance

    6.Don't Leave Me This Way

    7.The Hustle

    8.Stayin Alive

All of them are nice songs but just too common for me.

(P.S - Love is the Message(MFSB) & Ten Percent(Double Exposure) was played at every wedding reception, anniversary and family get-

together throughout the 70's. So I would

consider them disco anthems as well.)

I totally agree with the vinyl doctor. Not only is this song still timeless and as good today as back in 1979, it also formed the basis for so many other songs, which further defined music. Just consider:

Rapper's Delight from Sugarhill Gang brought rap for the first time main stream.

Grandmaster Flash and The Wheels Of Steel brought discomix/editing/remixing to the club floors.

Queen's "Another one bites the dust" brought this rock band to the dance floors (and gave them one of their biggest ever hits).

And who has kept count of all the other records that borrowed from the "Goodtimes" bass/drum line, as well as the countless remakes?

The ultimate disco anthem is Goodtimes.

Oh, finally someone who likes the big Jimmy "Bo" !!

But my all time Disco anthem is:

Mc Fadden & Whitehead's "Ain't no stoppin' us now".

This song has been used as basis from:

    1. Jacko's hit-remake

    2. Italian one shot singer. In Italy there was also a one shot guy - Pino Dangiò - who made a remake on it called "Balla!" that was a smashing hit all over Italy.

    Hey Masdefi,

the title of D'Angiò's classic was "Che idea!", "balla" was the chorus in the break.

Masdefi. I agree with you on both counts.

As far as Spank goes, they didn't play this song enough for me in the clubs. As soon as you hear it, you had to get up and dance.

...and Pino D'Angio scored with that song in Holland too. I have the 7". 1981, and according to the Dutch top 40 bible the actual title was "Ma quale idea".

    Pretty nice tune!

I could name hundreds but the song that no matter how many times I hear it still gives me “Disco Flashbacks” is “I love the Nightlife” Alicia Bridges, of course it was overplayed and became a bit tired (all anthems did), but when I first got the Promo it was sweet music to my ears, as far as I can remember this is the only Disco song that is not written in the standard 16 beat format, is more like 20 beat measures and was(is)a bit tricky to mix if you didn’t do your homework.

I have to agree with HustleBaby: Even some of the greatest disco songs have been made too mainstream. (Even notice how "I Will Survive" is the favorite song of those single suburban girls who dance at clubs in the mall?!) In my opinion (and despite the fact that Donna is THE diva), the most finely-crafted dance song ever is "Shame." As for anthems, you have to include "We are Family" and "Last Dance," even if they are too routine by now. But "MacArthur Park Suite" always brings back fond, hot memories for me; I remember one night when the DJ played the whole thing TWICE! (Oh, the poppers that must have been consumed that night!) And Gino Soccio's "Dancer" still stirs memories of heat, sweat, poppers and sex for me. But I have to protest any song by those damn Bee Gees. By helping to bring disco to the mainstream, I think they ruined it for the real fans.

Well, since I posted my rave for "Shame" earlier today I have been having lots of second thoughts! Oh, I still believe it is a flawlessly crafted song, but my comment seems to leave out all the fabulously orchestrated numbers that I love so much: productions by (god, where to start?!) Boris Midney, Tom Moulton, Tony Green and Giorgio; and songs including "Move On Up," "The Boss" and "Sinner Man" and a hundred more that don't come to mind right now! Next to the lack of any REAL divas (but that's another topic on the boards right now!), orchestration--big string and horn sections!--is the thing I miss most in today's soul-less dance music.

Anthems, anthems, anthems. There were sooooo many, but a few of the biggest for me were:
Bohannon feat. Dr. Perri Johnson - Let's Start II Dance Again
Patrice Rushen - Forget Me Nots
Whispers - And The Beat Goes On
    Candido - Jingo (1982 Re-mix)
    Michael Jackson - Thriller
    War - Galaxy
    Commodores - Brick House
M.F.S.B. - TSOP (although I hated the record)
1978 and 1979 there were just loads.

    1) "You're the First, the Last, my Everything" / Barry White
    2) "Get Down On It" / Kool and the Gang
    3) "Meco's Theme/3 W.57" / Meco (in São Paulo a radio plays it every week to close the sporting transmission)

Sorry I haven't been posting in a while, been taken up with other hobbies lately such as vintage video equipment though still listening to funk and disco :D .

Anyhow here's what I call THE ULTIMATE disco anthem:

    Brass Construction - Movin' 1975

And here are some of many that I would consider great disco anthems:

Trammps - (Disco) That's Where The Happy People Go 1975 (a popular choice for a disco anthem)

Paradise Express - Dance 1978 (12" version that is)

Rozza & Wine - Disco Boogie Woman 1975 (a real obscure track that most people probably haven't heard but great for a disco anthem though under 3 minutes long)

Paul Jabara - Disco Queen 1978 (Another obvious choice for a disco anthem)

Ottawan - D.I.S.C.O. 1979 (The title says it all)

MFSB - TSOP 1973 (Not only it's a great disco anthem, it's also the Soul Train anthem)

Van McCoy - Disco Baby/The Hustle 1975 (Well "The Hustle" is a popular choice for a disco anthem, but "Disco Baby" will make a GREAT disco anthem)

Gloria Gaynor - Never Can Say Goodbye 1974 (Another popular choice, Gloria Gaynor queen of disco :D )

Archie Bell & The Drells - Let's Groove/Soul City Walk 1975 (Both of these songs show what getting down is all about YEAH :D :D :D !!!)

Archie Bell & The Drells - Everybody Have A Good Time 1976 (Disco is all about having a good time :D )

Ohio Players - Feel The Beat (Everybody Disco) 1976 (This song is all about disco, it certainly deserves it's place as a disco anthem)

Carl Douglass - Blue Eyed Soul 1974 (Disco intrumentals make GREAT anthems)

Olympic Runners - Solar Heat 1978 (Fantastic disco instrumental)

Cerrone - Cerrone's Paradise/Love In C Minor 1976 (Ahhh some nice looooooooong disco songs, great for anthems)

Isaac Hayes - Theme From Shaft 1971 (one of the earliest (not the earliest) of what is known as disco, hmmm could we say Isaac Hays is the godfather of disco???)

Tina Charles - Disco Fever (WHAT AN ANTHEM!!!!!!!!!!!! :D )

    Chic - Dance Dance Dance/Everybody Dance 1977 (Both of these songs are DYN-O-MITE!!!!! :D :D :D )

Commodores - Machine Gun 1974 (I certainly consider this as a good disco anthem)

Rufus & Chaka Khan - Once You Get Started 1974 ("Everybody party hardy, get back into the groove..... everybody let's get on down")

There's so many to think of.
Australia mate! The land of many great funkateers!
