    WLBS RADIO

Thanks much for being there then, and remembering now, Super D! I was the Music Director and then subsequent Program Director for station WLBS back then, and believe me we had as much fun at the station as it sounded on the air. Detroit radio was alive and kickin then, and yes shouts out to Mojo, (Charles) WGPR who even though we competed against (and won) we still admired. You mentioned on another post , a old neighborhood hang out Warren/Central rollerskating...wow that really goes back...you're dating yourself Super D!

Also, someone mentioned the German group Kraftwerk on another post, WLBS or actually I was lucky enough to be the first station in the US to break it...total computer techno!

Welcome aboard "Dr.Ice"__ what up doe homie  ___ man you guys at LBS use to jam! You were also the first station that presented DJmixes on the air__I wish I had some of those old mixes......Double U(W)......ELL.(L)....Bee(B)....S. Also LBS played at lot of Disco Versions when other station didn't. Detroit radio was the best back then.
Warren and Cental Skating rink__yeah Dr.Ice I'm telling my age  One thing I won't agree with you on....."you competed and won against Mojo"__ LBS dominated the dance music scene___ however, with all due respect___ Mojo dominated the night time airwaves with the Midnight Funk Association. "Dr.Ice", are you still in radio? Keep in touch. I've always been a huge fan of local radio around the country.(even though it's been Institutionalized by corperate plutocrates :x )

    Super D,

Wow your memory cells remain intact from the 70-80's,amazing!
You got those pauses just right in the call letters W..L..B..S, that voice was a TRUE radio legend Frankie Crocker from WBLS in New York. No disrespect taken on the Mojo issue, radio stations are driven by ratings (Arbitron), and part of those ratings are broken into age / sex / race demographics, so specifically our station drew an older audience with a larger income...the ones we wanted for our advertisers. Popularity aside, (cuz I listened to the mothership land many times) we won only in the sense of ratings, and advertiser dollars (18-49)adults. Mojo's popularity was trully warranted, he was a friend and a great talent, but it didn't translate into as many ad dollars, esp. upscale disposable income adults, Cadilac ads!

Since you've tipped your hand re:your age, you probally go back further to Butterball Jr, and Messiah K Kenyatta (a.k.a Fred Gorre') on am radio (WCHB) in Inkster. We along with a few others got out of radio and into cable tv. I ran Barden Cablevisions sales dept for 8 yrs. Butter was a part owner and V.P and Fred G was in carge of community affairs. I left Det. for Philly to run another Cable Co, then ATL weather called.

I'm still in touch with several old radio folks you probally have heard. Gerald McBride (Mix) was at WLBS at the time , and has a fantastic business doing commercials, locally and nationally, we're good friends.

At any rate, your assessment of radio now is right on the mark!
Did you live in the Warren/Central area? ever go the the Greenfield Rollerskate rink? What High School?

"DrIce" you're making me cry (Great Clip) ...good good memories! I recall many nights staying up switching from LBS to GPR to DRQ keeping my finger on the record button of my Pops Technics cassette player ....great radio and each station had its destinctive formats (that's how radio use to be)....yes I remember Gerald Mcbride(incredible voice), He currently host a show here every Friday and Saturday night called "Back Jamm'in" on 92.3FM live from a club in Greektown. "DrIce" you mentioned AM WCHB__ oh yeah! I woke up many mornings for school listening to WCHB__ "Butterball Jr.", "Tuff Terry Nicholson", oh--can't forget the "Apology Line" at 6pm in the evening on CHB...can't forget waking up with "Mason" on AM WJLB. There I go dating myself again  ___ DrIce, Do you remember, The Scene"(Nat Morris)__you can plead the 5th if you want. Nobody ever admitted watching it :o . Here is another memory for you WJZZ (nuff said about Detroit Radio back then). But all-in-all WLBS was my favorite, I remember the first time hearing, Rene and Angela's ,"I'll be good" on the Kyle Lamont slot...needless to say, I was in heaven. I do recall you guys were very cutting edge back then when it came to music in Detroit. I remember hearing War, "Galaxy" being followed by the B52's "Rock Lopster" GREAT RADIO! I'm glad to hear you guys are doing good....as for me, musically I D.J.'d around the city for a while doing various "house music" gigs and parties__ never had a steady resident---but for a time I was down with a DJ group called underground resistance(UGR)__Disco is my first love and House is my second. I still play from time to time just for old time sake. And yes I grew up in the general area of
Warren and Central(Blvd and McGraw) and I attended Northwestern High. I do remember the Greenfield rink(I believe it was called Northland Roller Rink) unfortunately I got jacked for my skates at that rink by some "8mile Scoony-ons". What good good memories. "DrIce" just to let you know, 102.7 now plays Hip-Hop and R&B....(sign of the time) try not to cry too bad. K.I.T

AHHHH so many, where to start....

    1 - The 1977-78 New York Yankees!
    2 - Midway's 'Space Invaders.'
3 - Disco 92 WKTU FM, New York's no. 1 Disco dance station. (FM stereo was just blowing up back then & I didn't wanna hear AM any more after that!)
    4 - Thank God It's Friday movie.
    5 - Coin-op Pinball games!
    6 - Converse & Pro-Keds.
7 - Star Wars movie & when Meco Monardo dropped his version of the same in disco, BLEW MY MIND!!!!!!!!
8 - Block parties in the streets of NYC. Never the same today as it was in the 70s, THAT'S for sure!
9 - It was 'hip' to blast boom boxes in public, while sometimes lounging out on other people's cars for some reason. No matter what corner I turned, it was all I saw!
    10 - Bellbottoms & platform shoes!

    And just for kicks....

    11 - Psychedelic posters.
12 - Graffiti painted subway cars, not just toy tags mind you, but REAL burners, throw ups, the good stuff y'know?
13 - Blaxploitation movies like Shaft, Foxy Brown, Fred Williamson Black Caesar, Miss all that!
14 - Bruce Lee flicks & the Chinese Kung Fu flicks that followed.
15 - Saturday Morning TV shows, take your pick, too many to mention but Schoolhouse Rock was a big part of it!

    My two cents. Peace.

Some of my fond musical memories are:

    1) Going to a disco for the 1st time in my life (Costa Brava Disco Club in Barra), 1977. I was seventeen. Just magic. I went there with some school friends and I remember "One Love" by Celi Bee playing. This club was on the top of a small hill/island almost attached to the shore. A very beautiful tropical place.

    2) Le Spank by Le Pamplemousse. This song had been released in a big-selling compilation in Brazil (although in a 3 minute abreviated form). I got used to it. I vividly remember going to New York City Disco Club in 1977 (in Ipanema) and, for the first time, hearing the complete full version with that unrelentless, throbbing, insistent, repetitive, soul bass line. The energy of the song was a shock to my young middle class white boy innocent rock and roll ears.

    3) Hearing the full blown "SURRENDER (12" STUFF GUN MIX)" in 1987 (by Swing Out Sister) with that melancholic piano solo + trumpet solo in Ziig Zaag Disco Club...with my mind fuelled by alcohool.

    4) Along with musical experiences, there was also some first sex experiences... but I won't bore you with that, despite the huge demand. ( just kidding about the demand).

    Back in the day

    Super D,

Yes I remember it all, Nat Morris was a friend, and I knew the WJZZ / WCHB owners (Bell Family) and just about every jock that worked there. Matter of fact Kyle you mentioned was stolen from there as well as Keith Bell who did mornings at WLBS for a while. Rossetta Hines (WJZZ queen) I heard on the radio my last visit to Detroit last year. And if you're going back to AM WJLB...don't forget the lovebug Donnie Simpson.

It's time for a little self back patting...I programmed that station from the beginning up until they went full-time New Wave. The jocks had great, but not total leway in what they played, the music on the station at that time was completlely selected by me....execpt for two songs which the owners from New York shoved down my throat...Anita Bell..ring my bell....I played it, but hated it personally....and Double Dutch Bus..(long story, but my pal Gerald McBride almost got fired for refusing to play that song) .again...not my favorite, but that one I could tollerate. The station was New York owner but locally programmed, we found out about certain artists sooner but wanted the station to sound like Detroit, not a baby New York. We were rocking Luther V on Change (hot butterfly, Change etc..)long before most stations knew who he was..great brother will always miss him!

On to the neighborhood, I went to Chadsey...right down Mcgraw from you, and grew up one block over from Warren /Central on Mcdonald ...25 cent car wash (remember those). I also knew a music teacher at N'western ..Mr Whitfield...he was involved with some all star city bands and vocal music programs at Chadsey!

The city has changed so much, I left in 89-90 and didn't come back until 04. for a wedding..what a shock ...riding through my old hangouts...oh and yes WLBS was purchased by a huge minority firm Radio One who owns multiple stations in most large city markets, they also bought the call letters WJZZ and started it here in Atlanta...that alone almost got me back into radio...still miss it a little...but just couldn't conform to the cookie cutter mentality of today's programming.

    Peace,
    DrIce

"DrIce", I agree the city has changed , largely due to an agglomeration of factors___ "reaganomics of the 80's, industrial globalization of the 90's, and suburbanlization of the new millenian left the urban core of the city depleated of economic freedom.__ but you know how tuff Detroiters are, we just keep on keep'in.(D-train another LBS favorite)

Chadsey High was my initial choice of school, but my mother did'nt want me to catch the "Iron Pimp" so I ended up at NW because it was in walking distants(6 Blocks).

I remember when LBS switched to all New Wave music and then shortly after that changed to a more Adult/ R&B style just before they totally changed to Soft Rock....that's when they totally lost me :-?

To tell a secret, I once had aspirations of being a radio personality until I took a few radio and tv classes at Tennessee State University and hearing my voice over a few audio playbacks convinced me that I did'nt have the talent to talk on the radio. Only if I knew now that all I had to do to be a successful on air personality is polish up my comedic skills.  No just kidding--I still have the upmost respect for radio.

"DrIce" in your professional radio opinion__ in this day in time__ How do you think an all disco radio format would go over___ complete with a host of "old school" on air disco jocks with a blend of popular local house music dee-jays and producers?

Re: Whats your Top 10 Disco Days Memories.

I'm sure my top 5 slots would be filled with various private parties I both attended and served as DJ at, along with some really hot T-Dances at the I-Beam, the 181 Club, Frisco Disco, Oil Can Harry's and other clubs in San Francisco, Oakland, Los Angeles. Specific memories are kind of fuzzy now though, because of time passed and a few other reasons I won't go into....The private parties were the best because the DJs would take requests, and that would make a party very special (and you didn't have to fight for drinks and room to dance). If I'd known those times wouldn't last I would have enjoyed them even MORE than I did...

Re: Whats your Top 10 Disco Days Memories.

    1. Buying the first Musique album
    2. Seeing Madleen Kane on Dance Fever
    3. Crayons shoes (with the clear colored soles)
    4. Hearing Taana Gardner's Heartbeat on the sound system at the teen disco
    5. Actually using the Let's Disco booklet and record to try to learn disco dance steps
    6. Repeatedly listening to Do Ya Wanna Get Funky With Me from the Let's Disco album
    7. Taking a Disco Dancing class at the public library
    8. Watching Kristy McNichol dance to Musique's Keep On Jumping on an episode of the TV show Family titled Disco Lady
    9. Wearing baggy-style slacks and gold metallic neckties at the teen disco
    10. Reading the paperback Disco Fever by Kitten Hanson (about a thousand times) wishing I was old enough to fly to Paris and party at Regine's

I'll add an eleventh. My most vivid memory is listening to Casey Kasem's American Top 40 radio show. One week I actually thought Shoot Me (With Your Love) by Tasha Thomas was going to debut in the top ten. I was shocked when it didn't even chart. But I did get to hear a fair amount of disco on his program.
