Here is the listings to another of my Minidisc compilations. Before I got an MD, I made a cassette tape compilation for a friend of mine, I had such fun doing it that it was one of the first MD compilations I made. There is some disco, quite a lot of jazz, but the link is - they are all LATIN-influenced. I can tell you that most of these have been very popular in the UK disco/funk club scene at one time orf another. To give you some idea of how broad the spectrum of music played in our scene in London was, I remember in the early Eighties when Elvis Presley and "Bossa Nova" was one of the biggest tracks in the clubs!!

    Well, here we go :
    RAY BARRETTO - Pastimes Paradise
    CEDAR WALTON - Latin America
    OS IPANEMAS - Consolacao
ANTONIO CARLOS JOBIM - Brazil (Grrrrr !! ----> football)
AFRO MEDUSA - Pasilda (modern house from Disco Kandi 3 with great latin sections!)
TANGA CHICKS - Brasil Over Europe (same as above)
    GRANT GREEN - Mambo Inn
SUPER ALL-STAR (feat TITO PUENTE) - Francisco Guayabal
SUPER ALL-STAR - Ban-Con-Tim (The last two bring back memories of Beck's (German beer) fuelled nights in a brilliant basement club in London in the mid-Eighties!)
TITO PUENTE - Oye Como Va (What more need I say? - the best!)
    RAY BARRETTO - Acid
HARVEY AVERNE - THE Word (A nifty little Northern Soul instrumental!)
JOE CUBA - El Pito (in English!!)
    TITO RODRIGUEZ - Mama Guela
    MONGO SANTAMARIA - Druma Kugi
TITO PUENTE - Tito On Timbales
    SABU MARTINEZ - The Oracle
    ORCHESTRA HARLOW - Horsin' Up
WILLIE COLON - Set Fire To Me (disco!!!)
TANIA MARIA - Come With Me (a masterpiece )
    TANIA MARIA - Sangria
TANIA MARIA - Sementes, Grains and Seeds
    TANIA MARIA - Nega
PAZ - Sunny Day (Paz were a British jazz outfit and this was from their superb debut LP)
    PAZ - AC/DC
    PAZ - Cravo E Cando
    PAZ - Night Bird
LONNIE LISTON SMITH - Mardi Gras
STEVE AND EDYIE - Rio de Janeiro
    SERGIO MENDES - Rhoda
MARCOS VALLE - Crickets Sing For Anamonia

Maybe there's not an amazing amount of disco in there, but some serious dance music, nevertheless!!!

Bringing the SAMBA to SOUTH LONDON!!

Pretty cool sutff you got there Jazz! Some of the newer stuff I am not familiar with but everythign else is in my CD colection.

I would only add one or two Gato Barbieri songs and maybe a couple by Paquito De Rivera. Jazzier stuff but definitely good!

Your selection is merciless, those not fit will fall down in total exhaustion. I'dd only add one title and that can be found on the flip of the Marcos Valle "Crickets" if your copy is the 12" re-issue. I'm talking about the incredible calypso bongo freakout "House of Bamboo" by Earl Grant. The Karminsky Bros spinned this at Madame Jo-Jo's and the dancefloor would instantly erupt into pandemonium.

Thanks for the comments, guys. I'm flattered (and quite surprised) by the positive reaction I find Latin rhythms utterly infectious, and the music is a lot of fun! In the early Eighties when I moved into Central London for a while (my POST JAZZ PILGRIMS stage), I made a whole new set of friends, and we used to go to many Latin/Salsa nights - clubs entitled "Night In Havana", "Sol Y Sombre" etc etc, - and had many memorable nights. We were totally addicted to the samba beat - and Beck's!!! A lot of the music I put on the MD comes from that wonderful era in my life.

You're quite right, Jussik - that is the 12-inch I have - with the fantastic "House Of Bamboo" on the other side. Since then, I have managed to pick up a few Earl Ggrant original LPs as well. Unfortunately there is only so much much music you can fit into two and a half hours, and some really good tunes have to be missed out ... Until the next MD!

    Jazz:

Just when I knew you were knowledgeable, you blow me away with this list; Incredible! Being Puerto Rican, Latin music and rhythms is a big part of my collection and you've outdone yourself here. First of all, Ray Baretto, Willie Colon and Larry Harlow of Orchestra Harlow are all original members of the world renowned Fania All-Stars, my all-time favorite Salsa band, and easily some of my favorite artists. I've had the pleasure to see each of these individuals with their own bands within the last few years and they are all still great. Also, your jazz infusion with such names as Cedar Walton and Grant Green just shows how truly knowledgeable and appreciative of good music you really are. You are definitely Super Bad "Jazz Pilgrim".

    Easy,

    Sam "ALL JAM"

P.S. - You may want to check out http://www.LarryHarlow.com; A great site which features insight, Larry Harlow's current events and photos.

Sammy, thanks for your nice comments. That's very kind of you to say so. I always feel a little guilty when you say these things, 'coz I reckon others (including your good self and those guys from SG) have greater knowledge of the music than I do. Your good taste in music, Sammy, is SECOND TO NONE. But for me, I just know what I like - wonderful tunes that have come my way over these past years. I could never claim to be an expert on Latin music, but , by God, I love it all the same!!!!

But I'll tell you what!! We really should all get together one day and have a massive JAMMING session together - you and I and those SG chaps!!!! WOW!! Could you imagine what it would be like??

    Y-Y-Y-E-E-E-E-O-O-O-O-W-W-W-W-W !!!!!

I got my portable MD recorder last December and it came with an MDLP (Minidisc Long Play) feature. Basically I can choose from LP mode (1:1 - 74 min on one MD, LP2 (2:1 - 148 min on one MD) or LP4 (4:1 296 min on one MD). LP and LP2 are fine for music, whilst LP4 is better for speech/concerts only.

I usually record in LP2 mode - ie 148 min on one MD!!!

Jazz, I can't even imagine getting together with you, Blax and The Senhores de Groove. It would have to be a weekend because there would be too much good music for one night. As I say "Never say never". One never knows what forum other than this one will bring us together, but that would definitely be a dream come true. Playing music for people who understand and like what I like is my dream; Someday.

My portable recorder is a Sony MZR 700. This range, which included MDLP for the first time, came out in early 2001 and has now been superceded in March 2002 by a new web compatible range of portable recorders.

It is very useful being able to put 2 Cds' worth of music onto one MD...

For more info, go to http://www.minidisc.org - go to the section "What are Minidiscs" and click on "MDLP" ....

Blax, believe me; When I finally make that trip to Brazil, you'll be the first to know.
I can only imagine what the country was like last weekend when they won the World Cup. One big party I would guess. They should have commissioned 'The Senhores de Groove' to do the music for the entire country. That would be some party!
