Yesterday I was at a friends BBQ and I heard an fantastic afro-disco song, and the main chorus was:
Lets do the disco hi(gh)life.
(or is it: disco hi(gh)lite ?? )
It was on a cd that my friend copied (don't tell DJ Phil), but he didn't have any artist lineup.
It's a cd with all kinds of afro songs. Afro -soul, -funk, -disco, -latin, ...
anyway, does anyone recognise this song?
Who's the artist?

Hello nonkel808, I don't have a problem with friends or dj's copying songs to use between them. I have a problem with a song posted for downloads among the 'millions'. Songs have been copied throughout 'recorded' music history. But it is no longer one or two songs to a friend, relative or DJ. It is millions logging on to a site and STEALING the artist's work. I don't mind someone 'dubbing' a tape or a cd for a friend but I do mind the 'download' music sites that allow EVERYONE to get the artist's WORK for FREE.

Hi Phil,
This was not meant as a personal attack against you. It was just meant as a joke, but I guess it was a bad one.
Anyhow, I do understand your opinion about Audiogalaxy very well. It is true that downloading music is illegal! And that downloading music is stealing. And that this means less money for the record companies and the artist. And this also means less money for support of new artist.
But lets be honest, if you see what BIG record companies have been promoting and releasing these last years, I can only say that they did it for the love of MONEY, and not the love of music. All the crappie teen pop music, artificially made boy bands, whack-ass R&B divas and the replaceable artist have taken it so far that nowadays people listen to music NOT because it is an ART FORM, but because it is a CONSUMERPRODUCT! Young people are the weak victims of record companies, who are forced to like and buy the latest teen-pop sensation just because it is hyped and trendy! (These are no longer the music loving record companies from back in the 70's; they are money-hungry sharks!)
So the music nowadays has become PRODUCTS with an expiry date! And that is the main reason why a lot of young people download music, because it’s too expensive to buy a product that will be forgotten within half a year! So lets download it for free!
If you occasionally download on Kazaa or do FTP searches, then you will see that it is exactly this crappy music that is being downloaded the most! You should see what collections of bad-taste music most of these Kazaa users have! Only the latest hyped hits! It’s like collecting the latest frenzy, It is absolutely NOT about music!!
Of course not all music today is bad! There are a lot of GOOD artist with REAL music! But these people with new and inventive music are always been given a first chance by the people who believed in them, and mostly by SMALL record companies! (Not the big sharks). But all these small artist want to become bigger, so that they are able to earn good money and live of their music. That's where downloading poses a REAL THREAT! It will eliminate the chances of new small artist to become bigger artist! (But it won't stop them from making music) That is why I feel that downloading NEW + GOOD music is wrong! But I don’t think its wrong to download if the music already made LOTS of money for the artist.
There should be an international regulation determining when the rights to a musical piece are released (Just like Patents for technological products) So that downloading a piece of music older then a certain age is no longer illegal. And this age should be based on a quality + sales-rating of the song!!!! So that downloading the previous Titney Spears hit should not be a crime, because the music sucks, and it already made billions of dollars!
That will give BIG record companies a reason to start concentrating on releasing timeless good music instead of most of their forgettable crap nowadays; so that people will want to BUY and have and cherish it for the rest of their lives!
Also, sharing and downloading obscure disco or rare funk track that would otherwise be forgotten is NOT wrong! This musical history should not be forgotten in the dusty collections of a few die-hard collectors. Thru Audiogalaxy this cultural heritage is (was) being spread! Audiogalaxy was like a library for me. Its were you go if you want to look something up, because you can’t find it anywhere else! It makes people (like everybody on this board) realise what is out there, and if we really like it we will buy it. That is if you can find this very-limited-ultra-rare-promotional-dj-only album off course!
AND, I don’t think that downloading obscure disco or rare funk track is causing the record companies big money problems! The artist already made money for them 20, 30 years ago!
In fact they are taking advantage of the situation and re-releasing every piece of music on thousands of compilation albums and earning big bucks! (just check Amazon for the amount of re-releases!) And if I see a compilation album with song on it that I downloaded and liked, but also with other great tracks, then I will certainly buy it!!!
Also that's why I support and collect vinyl! No problem there with illegal downloads and copies!
So there you have it Phil!
I hope that you understand my opinion!
Peace,
808
Oh, by the way. I already figured out what the song was that i was looking for:
ORLANDO JULIUS > DISCO-HI-LIFE
familiar to anyone?
Be Peaceful to your brother
for life wasn\'t meant to hate,
guide the hand of one who needs you.
Good karma breeds good fate.....
Well, sorry Nonkel that I haven't gotten around to reading your excellet post until now...but it does seem that COMMON SENSE RULES AT LAST!!!!On 2002-06-30 20:18, nonkel808 wrote:

probably the best and more reasonable quote on the topic so far, and one that is closest to my own views.
I would like to add: In the UK, there is another twist to the tale that you folks in the US don't have to contend with. In the UK, we also have VERY high rip-off prices for CDs. If a CD costs say $12 in the US, it will typically cost £14 - £18 ($21 - $27) in the UK. Now then, who is ripping off whom then?? In the UK, this is a very big political issue - extending right through to the goverment itself ...If the record companies want to be so greedy and rip us UK consumers off, no wonder people go elsewhere.
To me, it is simply a case of pure economics. If the record companies can't offer the right product at the right price, then like in any other market, people go elsewhere!!!
To illustrates Nonkel's point perfectly well - if you have read my previous posts, you will see that I have only ever downloaded one MP3 track from AG, New York City by Miroslav Vitous - and I have been searching for it on vinyl/cd for over 20 years without success. When I find it, I will buy it. But until the record companies pull their fingers out, why can't I enjoy a copy of it to listen to from AG? YOU CAN'T BEAT THE MARKET!!!!!
