    1972 "Disco" songs

I know the topic of pre-disco, first disco, and early disco has been done to death but I still have a question :D

A former DJ back in 2004 listed some unique songs he played that fit the disco genre for the 1973 year. Can someone list songs for 1972 that also fit this category? Songs that "sound like" or are "danceable" do not qualify. They have to have a constant 4/4 beat and preferably real instrumentation. I will accept songs that may not have 4/4 if they truly stand out.

    Thanks!

One list that judges "disco" in a clinical sense which follows the criteria I asked and lists two songs not mentioned yet:

(Win, Place or Show) She's A Winner -The Intruders
One Night affair - Jerry Butler

Also on a CD entitled [GALLERY] which they show but don't know if it follows the outline????

    I Can't Understand It - Bobby Womack
I Got It - Gloria Spencer

Hope you guys can come up with more that fits the strict 4/4 criteria.

I'm still only aware of 3 disco songs from 1972

    Hi Eric,
"(Win, Place or Show) She's A Winner" by the Intruders also shows up as number 228 on the famous "Disc-O-La-Fortune 500" chart. Its beat and cymbals structure is identical to that in "Love Train" by the O'Jays and the drummer on both was Earl Young. I asked Earl which song was recorded first and he didn't know. As I suggested earlier, I don't think there's an earlier disco song than these two. I've already heard the powerful gospel tune "I Got It" by Gloria Spencer and that may actually be from 1971.

1971's "Theme from Shaft" by Isaac Hayes does have momentary disco but for some reason I and many other people don't list it as disco, probably because that section of the song is so unlike most of it and it's movie soundtrack flavor is what dominates. But his "Shaft II" from 1978 fits disco easily.

    Mark,
No, "Back Stabbers" and "Papa Was A Rolling Stone" don't match what he's talking about. I believe you mentioned those in the past too.

    originalbigm,
"Love is the Message" is actually from 1973 but does not match.

Instead of searching for the elusive "fourth disco song from 1972" (apparently there isn't one) don't forget that the search is still on for a disco song from 1990 and that one has a monetary prize of $100. It's more likely a disco song from 1990 exists now that I found "Rock Me Baby" by Arthur Prysock (1988, a remake of George McCrae's "Rock Your Baby") and Eric found a remake of Sylvester's smash "You Make Me Feel (Mighty Real)" by Jimmy Somerville (1989). That brings the known total to 4 for 1988, 3 for 1989, 0 for 1990, and 2 for 1991. The Somerville track was a top 10 Pop hit in the UK in January 1990 but was released in 1989 so it doesn't count. But I'm amazed I never heard of it before Eric mentioned it. Meanwhile, the remake of "Love Train" by the Supremes came out in February 1991, just two months too late. Fragile on the Rocks's "La Vie Continue" (a remake of "And the Beat Goes On") came out in December 1989, just one month too early. Look how close both songs are to 1990. Keep looking for disco remakes and the answer may come.

I don't know if this few will meet with your requirements, but all of this were (are) documented Dance Clubs (Discotheques)hits of those days, Kendricks’ was something of a “Disco(theque) Anthem” for many years (at least in my area), an the Trammps’ is regarded as one of the first ever Disco Clubs’ Mega hits…...

    “Follow the wind” Midnite movers
“Little bit of love” Brenda and the Tabulations
    Zing went the strings”… Trammps
Could it be I’m falling in love/I’ll be around” Spinners
“Date with the Rain” Eddie Kendricks

What about Hamilton Bohannon - Stop & Go?

It has a strident 4/4 beat, is approx 120 BPM AND it does have strings (albeit piccicato).

Or Lunar Funk - Mr. Penguin
pure 4/4, no strings, but it certainly paved the way.

BTW: Don't remember Win Place or Show having anything like the same rhythm to it as Love Train. Funny how the memory plays tricks.

The Hamilton Bohannon song "Stop and Go" is from 1973

Mr. Penguin charted in mid January 1972 so most likely released in 1971 but not sure. Does anyone?

Thanks for linking to photos of the labels. Makes the songs mentioned that much more real... the next best thing to being there :D

I had always thought that The Spinners would be included and are some of my favorite songs but do not have the constant 4/4 beat. They do still count as "disco" in the overall scheme of things.

Beg to differ, but Bohannon LP was from '72, according to a majority of sources on the net. My 7" is tucked away, so can't get to it and see.

Was Lunar Funk THAT early? Says '72 here:

    QUINNY - Bohannon song

    QUINNY,

I am not going to argue with you on the Bohannon song because I think that this is one of those "on the border" records. By the Dakar matrix numbers, the album was either the last of 1972 or first of 1973 and don't think anyone really knows for sure? I've seen 1972/1973 split entries while on the Bohannon web site they say 1973 yet the album says 1972. Could have been copyright in late 1972 and released in January 1973? Possibly charts for that era will tell. Did any of these songs from the "Stop & Go" album chart?

    Eric
