When I looked at this tracklisting I thought, "Great, I know very few of these, and they're pretty hardcore disco, so presumably the rest of them are as well. And there's enough stuff on there I don't possess to make it well worth me buying it."

And, surprise, surprise, after looking it up on the net I find it's compiled by none other than Joey Negro and Sean P. So, to me it looks a good buy, and I'm doubly reassured after seeing who compiled it. I'll definitely be getting it - it looks like a continuation of the Disco Spectrum series.

I note that phrases such as "hard-to-find", "highly sought-after", and "rare" are occurring in the net reviews of this CD. Hope we don't have a Kings Of Disco style "discussion" again and re-tread old ground...

It certainly looks very interesting and I know Joey Negro's taste, but I also have to admit that I know very few of these tracks.

Can other members guide us? Over all style? Worth to buy?

Perhaps Forrrce is lurking and will give the info straight from the horse's mouth. It'll be good to get quite a few of these on CD, so long as they're from master tapes or a good job has been done de-noising/de-clicking, which I presume would have been done by our very own goldenbollocks.

Definitely one I'll be buying as it is an extension of the Disco Spectrum series but focusing on the more soulful song based disco. Not mixed, rarer trax - a must buy I reckon.
Now... where should I get it from??

    Amazon sais:
    The Soul of Disco
Various Artists, Mixed by Joey Negro

Is that mixed or do they mean compilation by?

"Kilamanjaro" by Letta Mbulu is the only one I recognise, and that's a killer of a track. So the album may be a corker.

I just bought one from the label, you get a free hour long mix of some of the songs. Is it ok to post links? www.zrecords.ltd.uk

I suspect that will be cheaper than Amazon

Dave Lee's label keeps on putting out obscure we would most likely not seen elsewhere. I'm gonna investigate further in this one :D

The one track I know of from that list is "Gotta keep trying" by Tenderness.

My Italian friend absolutely loves this record and has on several occasions been outbid on eBay auctions for the 12 inch single (it always sells for $60+) so he will be beside himself to find it's available on CD! :D :D

This collection on first look is definitely a return to form by "Disco Dave" :P

    UPDATE INFO.

    Hi
just letting you all know after reading about this CD on this forum, I ordered it yesterday (3pm) from the Z Record label themselves (using the link provided in the earlier post) and it arrived today - That is fast !! (even though I am based in UK).

There are two options (packages) that you can buy
Package 1 seems to be the 2xCD Comp plus a mix CD

But better value (for an extra £3)

is the Package 2 - The Comp 2xCD, plus the Mix CD, PLUS A THREE TRACK PROMO ONLY 12" !! - the tracks being Jeannie Tracey, Velvet Hammer and Eddie Cheeba

I have only had time to skip through a few tracks and they sound good - more RnB Disco style (song orientated).
Will need a few more listens for full review, but DEFINITELY worth shelling out for..... and package 2 is the one to go for IMHO.

    Cheers

I don't believe it! I've been after Jeannie Tracy's LP from '82 for ages & can't find it anywhere, but here is the track I mainly wanted on CD (Feel Like Dancing). Oh thankyou Dave Lee/Joey Negro - you are a latterday saint!!

Guess I'll take the chance and order it. And I've listened to the music on the link Pete mentioned and there's some very good stuff from Joey there.

Sandra Dee, Just played the 12" of Jeannie Tracy.........didn't quite get it when skipping through the CD, But the 12" Really kicks !!- hadn't heard this before ! it's gooood !
BTW the 12" tracks are listed as Joey Negro edits.
And there are 6 tracks out of the 23 CD tracks that are listed as Joey Negro re-edits.

Is the third (mix) CD part of the standard package that you'll get in the shops, or do you get it only if you order from Z Records? I took a listen to the Jeannie Tracy and Eddie Cheeba tracks from the samples on the site, and they sound spectacularly good.

That Jeannie Tracy track is totally brilliant & I could never understand why most people don't seem to know about it (even DJs) & why you can never find the record. If I hadn't heard it on Radio Luxembourg's disco import chart in '82 one night I'd wouldn't have known about it either! I'm really pleased that it will get more exposure at last. :P

Also on the Z Records site I found a 1hr 29 min freely downloadable (128kbps mp3) "Southport Weekender" mix from Joey. Well worth downloading and listening to, with some good funky disco tunes on it.

    Oh F@*K!!!!
Perhaps that's the only way he'd consent to putting all these 12", worth £000's onto the compilation (i.e. they're not quite such good versions as the original 12", but what do you expect for £11.99?). It's a shame, but......

No probs on the link everyone. 8)

And Quinny, surely you'd need to hear the original and re-edit before you can judge which one is better? If someone knows what they are doing a re-edit can improve the right track.

I'd much rather just have the original 12" version, that's all.

My comment was an attempt to explain why so many re-edits appear on the CDs.

Can anyone explain to me why else you'd release a CD comp with 'ultra rare' tracks and make a fair proportion re-edits? Surely, most people would be buying for the originals' rareity value and once a re-edit is made, the tracks in that form are worth much much less, 'cos the re-edit will be sold in comparitive masses of numbers, becomes relatively common and is not 20 years old, but is in effect, a new piece of work. Therefore, what they're doing is satisfying the need for people to have part of something rare, without actually giving too much away. Rather cynical view of what I view as a relatively cynical piece of marketing. Am I alone? Probably.

I didn't know most of the tracks on this album but one original 12" I do own is Eddie Cheeba "Lookin Good" on Treeline. The A side is old school rap and flip an instrumental version. Though I like the rap side it does get rather tiresome as there is no let up and rap is pretty much continous from 7 mins or so. The instrumental is a good groove, but it gets a bit boring after a while. From what I can tell the re-edit combines the 2 versions, which IMO is worthwhile exercise as both had their pro and cons but this new version has the best of both worlds. Obviously some people will always want the original 12", but if an edit has a purpose like this I don't think it is cynical marketing.

Quinny wonders if he's alone with his opinion - No you're not - it's the same old syndrome of djs just having to elevate themselves onto a podium - I bet what they think is like: "here's what you could have if you had a record collection like I do, but since you don't you're going to have to be content with what I see fit to dish out. And MY version of this rare track is actually better than the original cause I'm so brilliant! Want the real thing - come to my gigs to hear it, you'll NEVER get to own it!" . So many times have I heard djs speak like that behind the backs of their punters.

Just give me the Rap side, any day. That's what I played, that's what I loved, BITD and what I've heard of the re-edit sounds clumsy to my ears. That Rap side used to go down an absolute bomb and if I got bored with it, I simply mixed into another record. What's the problem?

Jussi: So I'm not alone? I just wonder when the cult of celebrity DJ is gonna end? Maybe the music be become slightly more real once that happens?

AND WHILE I'M ON THE SUBJECT.....Why did they name the compilation 'The Soul Of Disco' when another compilation with the same title that's still in print, was only released about a year ago? Are they looking to repay all their profits into Ministry Of Sound's coffers once the potential court case is over?
