WHO in the disco world would do "LONG BLACK VEIL "

    *****

    I just picked up a wonderful early album by "______ ? _______"

One of the reasons I looked forward to playing it was because it has a version of the country classic "LONG BLACK VEIL " on it" :o :D ....( A great version too, I'm happy to report)

A while back , I made up a CD with as many versions of this song as I could find. It included : Johnny Cash , Natalie Merchant, Merle Haggard, The Band , Van Morrison, Bob Dylan, The Chieftans w/ Sinaed O'Connor, Stranglers, Joan Baez, Sammi Smith, Grateful Dead, Don Williams Kingston Trio, Ry Cooder, Hank Williams JR., Lefty Frizzel and a couple of versions by the Dave Matthews Band .

But who knew ....who knew ... this particular artist should have been included in the line up too? :)

    SO..........

---- WHO IS THE ONE AND ONLY ??? DISCO ARTIST TO RECORD THE COUNTRY CLASSIC ......"LONG BLACK VEIL "??? ...... :-?

.......also : ........there is something very different about this version ..... oddly different .............
    any guesses???

    :o Shenkin !! :o .....
    ........Barry White ???. :o

Look at that list of song performers .... Merle Haggard , Johnny Cash, The Grateful Dead , Dave Matthews .... you really think we can quietly slip Barry White into this line up ????????? :-?

ya , OK ... you are absolutely right ....

The answer is : :D BARRY WHITE :D

For those who don't know ..... "LONG BLACK VEIL " is a wonderful tale of sorry affairs ..... sung from the grave of a guy falsely hung for killling some guy late one night under a dimly lit street light... The witnesses swore it was him . Trouble was , he couldn't reveal his alibi.... because the night of the murder he was .... "in the arms of my best friend's wife" .
Who knew adulterers had such scruples..... so , to spare her the grief, he kept his secret to his early death . Ten years later, that nasty wench still visits his grave wearing a LONG BLACK VEIL and weeps endlessy o're his bones.
It's great drama pinched into a two-and-a-half minute tear jerker !!

NOW ...with this in mind .... what do you think BARRY WHITE did in his version that was very very odd ? ....... Very strange indeed ..... ???????? :-?

    The Long Black Veil

Ten years ago, on a cold dark night
Someone was killed, 'neath the town hall light
There were few at the scene, but they all agreed
That the slayer who ran, looked a lot like me

The judge said son, what is your alibi
If you were somewhere else, then you won't have to die
I spoke not a word, thou it meant my life
For I'd been in the arms of my best friend's wife

    Chorus
She walks these hills in a long black veil
She visits my grave when the night winds wail
    Nobody knows, nobody sees
    Nobody knows but me

Oh, the scaffold is high and eternity's near
She stood in the crowd and shed not a tear
But late at night, when the north wind blows
In a long black veil, she cries ov're my bones

    Repeat Chorus

Can you not hear those deep sultry Barry White vocals so masterfully conveying these disparaging woes?? ........And yet , then again , so odd .... his version .....so so odd ............. ........

(????) ---- why would that be????
