Could the ruling Diva of today be nobody else but Kylie Minoque? What do you think? The single CAN’T GET YOU OUT OF MY HEAD is massive all over Europe, the album FEVER is doing huge business and have you noticed how all major papers such as FHM, Maxim, The Face, Mojo, Arena, etc. call her music Disco. Not pop house or handbag dance but Disco. So, behold the new Goddess. Watch how she sparkles, blurs edges, shines and drives the sleek yellow lasciviously luxe sports car down the Disco highway!

Kylie really started getting my attention when she appeared in the closing ceremonies of the 2000 Summer games in Sydney. She's such a sweetie on her official website kylie.com my fav track from her ; Your disco needs you.

I also appreciate italian dance singer Alexia, Music is the vibe Uh lalala, The summer is crazy Number 1 and so many more.
If you buy this record your life, will be better.

Hmmm... last time I checked, although Kylie had massive success in Europe and other parts of the world, she remains relatively unknown in North America.

Well, that's North America's loss. It was in yahoo North America that the 'disco sucks' movement put an end to decent dance music for over 10 years, whereas disco and its celebration of joy and life continued uninterrupted in Europe.

I say Long Live the Reigning Queen of Disco, Kylie.

I have to agree: Kylie is a good contender for current disco queen. Not only has she kept the spirit of disco alive, but she comes across as a genuinely nice person in interviews.

It may be sacrilege to suggest it, but when both Kylie and Donna Summer were recording for Stock, Aitken and Waterman in the late 80s (i.e. both were putting out tracks with a similar sound) their voices didn't actually sound much different ......

Maybe this was intentional, and of course you can do a lot of trickery in the studio .....

Sorry to hear she hasn't had much success in the US/Canada - for those who are unfamiliar, her stuff is definitely worth a listen.

The gorgeous Kylie started as a daytime soap starlet in Australia in the 80's, acted opposite Jason Donovan (where is this guy now?- not that we really care...) recorded in the UK with Stock-Aitken-Waterman, had enormous hits with LOCOMOTION, BETTER THE DEVIL YOU KNOW, WHAT DO I HAVE TO DO etc. The sound was pure cheerful 80's mid tempo hi-nrg-handbag pop disco. During the 90's Kylie gained street credibility, , dated famous rock stars, appeared on top magazine covers, became a cult figure, recorded duets, and became more gorgeous each year. She never went away but now she's more popular than ever before, with perfectly mellowed Brigitte Bardot looks and an apparently sweet and amiable personality. Straight guys think she's the hottest thing alive and gay boys adore her. And she's got a big female following as well. You may have seen Kylie performing during that last olympic extravaganza, along with John Paul Young, who did a wonderful LOVE IS IN THE AIR. If you missed that, how about MOULIN ROUGE - she's the absinthe fairy. AMERICA WAKE UP TO KYLIE!

This is the first time that I've ever heard

of Kylie M. If she is suppose to be the next

disco queen, then which female disco artist

    would you compare her with?

This is simply staggering - Kylie has been an institution in Europe for 10 years, so imagine if someone would suddenly ask who Madonna is and who'd you compare her

with:-)! Okay, I'll try - if you hear her sing for the first time you'd pay no real attention to her as a great vocalist. She can certainly handle a tune but she's a strong image first, very much like Madonna is. Kylie's image is different, though. She is sweet without being annoying, extremely sexy without coming across like a slut, high fashion yet street. Like Madonna, she gives sharp interviews. Kylie is actually not the next disco queen, she has been that for years. Check her websites. Order her new Cd. You'll fall in love.

I'm surprised by the lack of recognition of Kylie Minogue by my North American friends. It may well be that she didn't make much of an impression in the US but here in Canada she was known.I was playing her records back in the 1980's.

Kylie's lack of recognition stateside may be due to the fact that her only US hit of note, "The Locomotion", was such a trifle. As for Kylie being a disco queen......she's more like an overaged pop princess.

Sorry, but I really have to disagree with your statement. The average Canadian has never even heard of Kylie. How often have you heard her music on the radio? When was the last time one of her videos was in heavy rotation on MuchMusic? The Canadian musical scene (excluding Québec, of course) is essentially the same as the USA. Compare the charts and the only difference is the presence of a few Canadian acts here, and a stronger emphasis on hip-hop/R&B there. Handbag/Euro has become more popular in recent years, but to have songs in this genre in the top 40 is more of an exception than the norm.

Kylie was/is only "known" by the folks who were really into Stock-Aitken-Waterman dance-pop. As for S-A-W... while they did have considerable success in the clubs here, *very* few of their productions had any mainstream impact. You could probably list all their hits on one hand, and most of them were in the early to mid-80s. The majority of S-A-W productions didn't even get released in Canada at all. The people I knew who were into that stuff had to get it all on import. "Ooh look, something new on PWL!"

Actually, the video of 'can't get you out of my head' has been on fairly regular rotation on musiqueplus over here and quite a few clubs are playing her. No radio airplay that I know of however.

Proclaiming Kylie Minogue a disco queen is as preposterous as proclaiming The Spice Girls good music.

Kylie is manufactured euro pop, forgettable, non-talented, and she has fake boobs to boot.

The reigning disco queen is still, today, as much as 20-30 years ago, Jocelyn Brown. She has never lost her voice or presence, and has been part of disco, house, garage, soul, r&b, and what not. She has worked A LIFETIME with any and all of the greatest dance music producers. I don't even know the full list (she probably doesn't either) but a random selection would include Patrick Adams, Peter Rauhofer (a.k.a. Club 69), Incognito, Salsoul Orchestra, Todd Terry, Jacques Fred Petrus, Masters At Work, Fred McFarlane, and God knows who else.

She is a mother and grandmother, and KICKS Kylie in a heartbeat.

OK, I'm done now (valium... where is my valium).

PS: Kylie has a sister, Dannii, who recorded a remake of Stacy Lattisaw's "Jump to the beat" in 1991. Easily a better disco track than any of Kylie's fodder. More recently, Dannii gained noteriety as Formula 1 driver Jacques Villeneuve's girlfriend. But they have split in the mean time.

PS2: Jason Donovan apparently has some sort of a career in London's West End as a 'star' in Andrew Lloyd Webber musicals.

I need to lie down now...

Kylie an overaged pop pricess? Kylie got silicon implants? Kylie anything less than transcendentally fabulous? Kylie a great vocal talent? For your information, it's NO to all of the above. Jocelyn Brown has naturally got awesome vocal talent but that alone does not a Disco Queen make. The Queen has got to have style, legs, Disco pizazz. Obviously some of you folks have not actually seen Kylie's video CAN'T GET YOU OUT OF MY HEAD. Marvel at teh costumes. Check the sports car. Groove to the moves. And who's the New Disco king, then? Easy. That's Jamiroquai. He says his music pays hommage to classic disco and indeed it's all there in FUNK ODYSSEY. Or...could the King be Bob Sinclair...?

Hey, I like the Spice Girls, and I'm not ashamed to admit it. But of course, everyone is entitled to their opinion. Speaking of the Spice Girls, they have a great disco song in "Never Give Up On The Good Times" (it's on the album "Spiceworld"), which happens to be my favorite song of theirs.

Jussi, as much as I admire your vast knowledge of our beloved disco music, your writing skills, and your advice and suggestions, I am having too much fun poking fun at your Kylie obsession. I think you must be having early signs of a mid life crisis. Next will be a leather jacket, coloring the grey out of your hair and possibly a Harley...

Don't get me wrong, I don't hate her... but she is NOT, by ANY standard, a disco queen. Here I go...

    On 2001-11-17 09:04, JussiK wrote:

Kylie an overaged pop pricess? YES, OVERAGED AND UNTALENTED AT THAT... Kylie got silicon implants? CHECK OUT KYLIE IN EARLY 'NEIGHBOURS' EPISODES AND TODAY... Kylie anything less than transcendentally fabulous? SHE IS A MANUFACTURED WANNA BE, AND ONLY REMAINS IN THE SPOTLIGHT DUE TO MIDDLE AGED PRODUCERS AND RECORD BOSSES WHO, I PRESUME, GET OFF ON HER. Kylie a great vocal talent? I DO APPRECIATE YOUR SENSE OF SARCASM HERE (THANK GOD, I THOUGHT YOU WERE BEING SERIOUS...)

The Queen has got to have style, legs, Disco pizazz. LAST TIME I CHECKED, JOCELYN HAD TWO VERY STRONG (PERHAPS PROMINENT IS A BETTER WORD...) LEGS, TONS OF STYLE (AND I MEAN TONS...) AND A PIZZAZZ THAT WOULD SQUASH KYLIE'S UNNATURALLY BALANCED FRAME IN AN INSTANT. Obviously some of you folks have not actually seen Kylie's video CAN'T GET YOU OUT OF MY HEAD. I HAVE SEEN IT, "SNORE"!. Marvel at teh costumes. Check the sports car. Groove to the moves. NONE OF THE CRITERIA YOU GIVE HERE ARE OF KYLIE'S DOING. PRODUCERS, DIRECTORS, PROP MASTERS... THE ONE TALENT THAT MISS MINOGUE HAS IS THAT SHE IS A GOOD STUDENT. SHE OBVIOUSLY CAN MEMORIZE A FEW DANCE STEPS AND FOLLOW DIRECTIONS. IF IT WEREN'T FOR DIRECTIONS SHE WOULD PROBABLY JUST BE STANDING THERE... WAITING FOR SOMEONE TO TELL HER WHAT TO DO. BARBIE HAS MORE INTELLIGENCE THAN KYLIE...

And who's the New Disco king, then? Easy. That's Jamiroquai. He says his music pays hommage to classic disco and indeed it's all there in FUNK ODYSSEY. Or...could the King be Bob Sinclair...?

As much as I love Jamiroquai, I would volunteer Barry White, who, as Jocelyn, has never lost his touch and is still around.

But Jamiroquai is at least talented, grooves like mad, and is original to boot. I have seen him live in London and he can deliver his songs on stage as well as the album originals. Something Kylie can't even manage play-back...

And Bob S is a good idea, but instead I would volunteer the Japanese producing/remixing DJ collective GTS. On their albums they truly pay hommage to disco's golden years by playing, or using, or shamelessly copying from many classics.

Fortunately, they do this with complete credit to the originals. They even go as far as inviting the disco singers from back then, such as Alfa Anderson, Lucie Martin (both from Chic), Jocelyn Brown (HELLO!!!) and even Loleatta Holloway.

But, like Kylie, I don't think GTS has made any impact anywhere (except for Japan, of course, which even Kylie can not say!).

Judging by Her tremendous chart topping success all over Europe Queen Kylie can have her floor washed with any of the lesser handbag divas! Adored and worshipped by the masses she will be elevated to the heavens where Jocelyn, Grace and the rest of the Divine ones shall greet Her. - Repent, Maarten, you sinner!

You know why so many people rate Kylie? It’s not because she’s a great singer – she’s competent, not great. It’s not even because of her songs – some have been good, some bad, some indifferent. She simply comes across as a nice down-to-earth girl with no attitude, who doesn’t take herself, life or her career too seriously. A refreshing change from some others who are so up themselves it’s nauseating!

OK, to start with she was manufactured pop – so what? Many others were too. And if she’s had breast enhancement, who cares – we all want to look our best. She doesn’t pretend what she does is great art, but she’s good at it, and has entertained millions since the late 80s. Maybe she’s not really disco diva material – I doubt we’ll ever agree on how to qualify for this title, but SHE’S OK!!! Let’s give the girl a break!

Please people... Before being all negative about little Kylie, hear her talk and hear her sing.

She can hardly be accused of being a mere fabricated pop tart, since she has written a large part of her own material. Her Impossible Princess album from circa 1997 was very much her own creation!

If you want to know what Kylie is all about, I recomment the following tracks:

Better The Devil You Know (1990)

    Confide In Me (1994)

    Automatic Love (1994)

    Some Kind Of Bliss (1997)

    Spinning Around (2000)

On A Night Like This (2000)

    Butterfly (2000)

Can't Get You Out Of My Head (2001)

    Your Love (2001)

Well, you'd better get the albums Lightyears (2000) and Fever (2001). If you're in the US, order them on import since they haven't been released there.

    You WILL enjoy her!

    Right ON!

But Maarten, add to the Harley and the shoulderpadded Versace(ish)leather jacket a thinning mullet hairdo (sometimes worn in a ponytail), a Bruce Springsteen concert t-shirt, some extra kilos and a bleached 19-yrs old Russian blonde in a leopard skin miniskirt....That's me!
