Danceable pop... not really disco IMO. Also, although they were huge in Europe, they never caught on in North America except for "Rasputin".
Is Boney M Disco?
Not in top 700 dj disco tracks??
Wot???
hmmm..... :-?

Agree totally with Graham.
I always thought Daddy Cool was one of the best disco records I ever heard. It was pretty hot in the clubs in New York, and it got some airplay on the radio. But Boney M never really caught on. Too bad.
BTW - their producer was the same guy that produced the infamous Milli Vanilli
I like Daddy Cool other than that Boney M don't do **** for me.
Boney M is to disco music what McDonalds is to food.

IMO: Their only half creditable record was Baby Do You Wanna Bump and then only for the largely instrumental 'B' side.
Damned, Quinny, we agree AGAIN :o "BDYWB" is an incredible Eurodiscostomper! "Rasputin" comes in second. "Sunny" is cool. "Daddy Cool" and "Ma Baker" are good Disco-popsongs. The other stuff is

.....oh oh ...... I listen to "Rivers of Babylon " quite frequently .......... ..........

And does it hurt? Hahahahahaha![]()
Just kiddin'At the end of the 70's and during the 80's they evolved much to much into pop IMHO

:D it will next time ! ...... I've always found "Rivers of Babylon" to be haunting and sad ....

'Gotta Go Home' & 'Never Change Lovers In The Middle Of The Night' were OK. I also like 'Daddy Cool' & their versions of 'Sunny' & 'Love For Sale'. Yes, much of their output was cheesy & poppy in the extreme but you could say the same about lots of 70s disco acts who regularly get championed on this site for their supposed 'disco cred'.
I've only heard 1 Boney M. album "Take the Heat off Me" and whether or not it is classified as disco is less important than the fact that most of the songs (the only one I liked was "Daddy Cool") were quite forgettable.
NO! Boney M are not disco. If they are, then East 17 were an operatic quartet!
:o Boney M are not disco ??? Wow !! They have sold over 40 million albums and more than 65 million singles worldwide and has 10 Number One hits - like disco band - thanks that you open my eyes ! Please say me where I can take my money back !![]()
Boney M are eurodisco. Not the best there is in that particular bag for sure, but still, in people's minds all over Europe, the name of the group instantly spells the five letters D.I.S.C.O. Gloria Gaynor, Barry White, The Bee Gees, The Village People, Baccara and Boney M. To the vast majority of people that's disco - no matter academia likes Boney M not.
REMICKS yes we in the u.k found it sad too, five weeks at #1 pop then it fell off and the record company flipped it with brown girl in the ring and it headed on back up, it spent a massive 40 weeks on the chart it was like torture, bearing in mind the grease soundtrack was just released and they were gonna start pulling singles of that,it was indeed a very sad timeOriginally Written by remicks

Disco to me is music that is uplifting and makes you feel like dancing........sorry if that does not sit easy with the cerebral types who want to pidgeon hole ...using God alone knows what criteria !
YES Boney M were Disco , at times....Frankie F WAS disco !!
Cheese, whatever, they did make some GREAT uplifting tracks.
Also ELO...how about them, a group that made some GREAT tunes, I would class some of thier stuff 'disco' (listening to it now), but others will disagree.....as is their right.
As the Master Mancusso has proven 'Disco/Dance music' crosses all boundaries, depending on mood, situation, loaction, time and space.......

I'm probably guilty as anyone , with this pigeon * holing thing .... :( ....sorry but I am fascinated by cataloguing sounds .... discovering what songs sound like others .... which ones built off of the sounds of others ... their roots .... and dtermining what elements/ingredients tip a song into the disco column. One of the most fun parts of '74--'76 era was that no one knew for sure what the hell disco actually was ...DJ's played what worked , what went over !!
I'll say one thing ... I think a lot of it has to do with intent .. was the music produced with the intention of getting dance play ... ( did ELO seek club play ..were they purposefully making danceable records ?) I think something like "LOWDOWN" was foisted upon the club scene by a strong marketing label ..... COLUMBIA ... who all too soon seemed to put all their artists on 12" singles ... I doubt you'll ever find Boz participating at a disco function or would be caught near one ....still another part of me thinks "too bad buddy ... you got "influenced" back in the day ....and what you wound up making was a DISCO (ish) record!"
*****
.....Back to the topic .... "RIVERS OF BABYLON" was one of those records I ordered when it was new ....as a 12" import through Colony (?) ... the New York record store that shipped out ? ...always advertised in Billboard ...... I ordered it ...unheard/unknown since I was ordering a pink vinyl copy of The Stone's "Miss You" anyway ..... hmm where is that record ? ..... and I wasn't hearing Boney M around anywhere....even though I think Colony listed it at the top of their imports ....
I excitedly received the package in the mail and liked "River " a lot ..but decided not to play it in the club ...not disco enough :) .... to me at the time .... Still I liked it ....and always expected it to be a radio hit ... I only ordered my records that one time and decided it was too risky an investment .... besides SF now had many stores carrying more imports ....
Five weeks at #1, DISKODISK !! I feel a little less (( )) ... now !!! ...... :P --peaked at a puny # 30 here .... and that made it Boney M's biggest US hit ..... .......

* ---speaking of pigeons , I've got some birds to go band !!
Boney M were ceratinly one of the nadirs of Disco. What f*****g crap they were. Unfortunately, this was one occasion when the record buying public DID buy a band's records like hot cakes, much to my and every DJ's chagrin. My father, then 64 years old, loved the Rivers of Babylon/Brown Girl In The Ring and so did all the old age pensioners at his tea dances along with every 8 year old in the country.
Where's me sick bag, I wanna wretch?
Aha! Finally! .... someone emerges from within the family with good musical taste !!! :POriginally Written by QUINNY
.........I'm kidding :P of course !...
Quinny, your no-nonsense , take-no-prisoners posts always crack me up !!! :D
One more comment , then I'll back off from here... I always thought that Boney M was universally treasured over there .. and I would have thought especially by the DJs ..... ( be honest ..were you the exception ??) I have the Boney M megamix and as I listen through the various songs ....I have to admit that I don't quite get it....figured it was one of those European things that gets lost in the translation ..... although I'll always insist on this Quinny :
.... When it comes to liking "Rivers Of Babylon" ..... your DADDY was COOL !!!!:D

There is a lot of crap from Boney M but I love the vibe of "Sunny", "Daddy Cool" and "He Was A Steppenwolf" which i have on yellow vinyl. Saw them recently (2004) and they were crap, horrible keyboards replacing the strings.
Just did some aural research and I also kinda like "Fever"! In fact I'm very fund of it. In fact I'm gonna play this many times tonight :D
Together with "Lovin' or leavin''', and as dessert, as pièce de résistance "Baby do you wanna bump". It's gonna be a beautiful night.
