SOUL DEEP SERIES ON BBC TV
Each Saturday at 8.25pm, BBC2 will be airing a new six-part series entitled Soul Deep - The Story of Black Popular Music. Produced by soul aficionado, William Naylor, responsible for the critically acclaimed BBC documentaries on ‘60s pop (Walk On By) and country music (The Lost Highway), Soul Deep traces the evolution of soul music and its offshoots from its roots back in the 1940s up to the present day explosion of urban music. Each hour-long programme will focus on a different aspect of black popular music - the introductory episode, The Birth Of Soul, concentrating on the roots of the genre and features a previously unseen interview with the late Ray Charles as well as archive film and telling contributions from legends like James Brown and Bobby Womack. It’s followed by Gospel To Soul, Detroit And Chicago, Southern Soul - including rare footage of cult Memphis soul man James Carr in performance - Funk and finally Contemporary R&B, which includes interviews with some of today’s young urban stars.
B&S had an advance viewing of the first episode and gives it a big thumbs up in appreciation
