he's her lover, but what is his name?

    Howdy discofans!

    Who knows this song?

    Male-singer (begin of lyrics):

"Someone is whirling my lady away/
across the dancefloor/ twisting'n twirling my lady away/
    lost her once more/
    to the dancefloor the dancefloor"

    (chorus)
"But I can't dance the way, the way they do today (2x)"
    "I can't dance, but I'm her lover..."

    Male-backing-group (in Village People-style):
    "I'm her lover, I can't dance"(repeat)

I heard this song on the Dr.Rob Magic Disco show (anyone know what happened with that show?). It was played on 4th of June 2004. The site is down and I can't check the playlists.
It's a thriving, almost H-NRG song. Very much in the Village People-style, with pumping bassline, and a guitar-lick well sampled in hiphopsongs.

Any help on identifying is very appreciated!

    10X,
    Ivo

    Hi,

The full playlist for the Dr. Rob show of 4th June 2004 is as follows:

    1, D I S C O Lucy , Wilton Place Street Band , Island , 1976
    2, Dance Fever , Triple "S" Connection , 20th Century , 1979
    3, You Get Me Up , Clarence Reid, T.K. , 1979
    4, Movin' On , Esther Williams, Friends & Co./Bullseye , 1978
5, You Stepped into My Life , Melba Moore, Epic , 1978
    6, Native New Yorker , Odyssey, RCA , 1977
    7, Butterfly D I S C O , James Adler and Madame Moth , A Top New York Label , 1979
    8, Crying , Instant Funk , Salsoul , 1979
9, Got to Have Loving , Don Ray, Polydor , 1978
    10, Night Fever , D I S C O Light Orchestra , Delta , 1978
    11, Tenderly , Alexander's D I S C O time Band, Ariola , 1976
    12, Love , Brass Construction , United Artists , 1975
13, Happy Birthday, Baby , Joe Simon, Spring , 1979
    14, Holiday , Amadeo , Able , 1978
    15, My Favorite Fantasy , Van McCoy , MCA , 1978
    16, One More Touch , Al Styne , Air , 1979
    17, One Love , Celi Bee and the Buzzy Bunch , T.K. , 1977
18, Love Is You , Carol Williams with the Salsoul Orchestra, Salsoul , 1977
    19, I'm a Lover , Scatino , AZO , 1979
    20, Happy Birthday , YBS , Ariola , 1979
21, Happy Is the Only Way , Sine, Prelude , 1977
    22, Now We're Doing It , Irene Cathaway , The Record Company , 1977
23, Now That I've Found You , One Way featuring Al Hudson , MCA , 1979

Looking at the titles of the songs (I know many but not all of them), I would say that possibly this song is "I'm a lover" by Scatino, which I don't know.

The last ever Dr. Rob radio show was 3 weeks later, on 25/06/2004, which was a huge loss to us all. I emailed him about why his show had finished, and here is part of his reply:

"I feel that I was able to mold a moment of time into an artistic expression of my interpretation of the highest intellectual and philosophical flourishing of popular culture, and how fortunate for me, in the process, to have so touched you and others of the world's art-and-culture elite. However, with over eight years of operation of the radio show and website as a one-individual, volunteer, nonprofit enterprise, I have decided that it is time for respite. Though the near-future dictates other non-media-related projects for me, the distant-future might see me back on the world-scene in a similar or the same capacity; we shall see."

    Regards,
    Darren

    It's #19!!!

Thank you so much for helping me out, Darren!
I only have this song recorded from that radio show, but now i have the singer. No info on him yet...
That's a real loss. I wanted to email too. But I never found his address. He still could leave his site online?

    Many thanks!

Unfortunately, for some reason, Dr. Rob decided to delete the entire web site the day after his last show! I don't know why he couldn't have left it there for historical purposes.

The web domain is still registered to him, so you could try emailing him on drrob ~at~ discomagic.org (Replace the ~at~ with @).

Fortunately before he did pull the site, I saved every single one of his playlists from 2001-2004 inclusive, as it has proven very useful as a reference. If a song is good enough to feature on his show, it's good enough for me, and all the time I am discovering new songs, artists and albums that had featured on his show.

You can view some of his playlists on the site http://www.archive.org/ , enter http://www.discomagic.org/ in the box and you'll find snapshots of the web site. However it doesn't look like you can get those last few weeks' worth of playlists, so I'm glad I saved them!

PS To anyone else looking in who was not familiar with Dr. Rob's DISCO Magic radio show, let me tell you that what his web site lacked in good design, his radio show more than made up for in good music! :D :D :D

Thanks for the info about the drrob site!
I always enjoyed reading and looking the glamour and splendor pages. It was so well documented.
I'm glad that you mentioned the archive.org.
It almost feels like friday when his show would be on in about an hour and half from now.
Thanks again Darren from Slough (at the office? )

    Greetz,
    Ivo
