    ALERT - 12" REPRINT/BOOTLEG Copies on Ebay

I believe I have fallen victim to a scam on Ebay.

I bought a 12" copy of Rare Pleasure 'Let me down easy' advertised as a Promotional 12" from a seller in UK, for a lot of money, and it turns out to be a reprint copy.
The seller I bought this off is phillyg71 - beware you don't get snagged likewise.

A seller called Salvo is also selling a reprint , but he states it IS a reprint.

The amount of trouble I have had from UK sellers really isn't worth the bother, they seem intent on ripping people off, even their own countrymen !!!

Can anybody confirm to me the differences between the Original and Reprint apart from poor label, new vinyl, C-505 number (e.g. what the run out groove says, etc..)

I've been noticing quite a bit of bootleg repressings in the last few years, but it has really gotten out of hand as they are copying the graphics and sleeves. If you are going to buy high value records you are best to deal with a local dealer or one you trust and have done business with in the past.

I have certainly seen many 12" singles advertised in magazines
and thought it can't be the original. Even on sites on the net.
I try to trawl charity shops/ car boot sales to look for original copies. I'm so sad I even make long drawn out lists with labels and years so I know what i'm looking for  . Its difficult but at least you don't pay silly money. I know how you feel though.

It's definitely getting riskier out there when you are trying to get hard to find or out of print stuff. Ebay, Amazon, etc. You just don't know what you might get from the sellers if you get anything at all.

    update

    Thanks for the replies guys.........
I have tried emailing the seller, and will continue to pursue !
Hopefully I will be able to come back and say everything was sorted amicably.

This post was a warning to buyers (and sellers) that we have a network here that we can use to alert Disco fans of the current 'reprint'/bootleg discs doing the rounds. (If Bernie doesn't mind).
There is nothing worse than expecting a decent original and getting a bum deal.

I have had good dealings with UK sellers, but I seem to have had much better experiences with my USA dealers.
I noted your advice about sellers and tax.....

Don't mind at all. In fact I encourage more talk on this subject of bootlegs being passed off as originals or legitimate reissues so that everyone knows the pitfalls out there.

I'm a bit confused by all this for several reasons

First of all, by "reprint" do you mean a re-issue of an out of print recording? Does this mean someone is making copies of a record and leading others to believe that the copies are originals? Are you referring to CDr copies of old records? I can't buy from eBay or Amazon as I refuse to put my credit card number on the internet (afraid of identity theft) but when you DO buy from them, do they require you to pay in full first? If you're not happy with your purchase can you request a refund or exchange? And finally, what exactly is wrong with a quality reissue if all you want is the music and you're not a collector who has to have the original? I bought a reissue of an old John Lennon album (it said "reissue" on the cover and I knew what I was buying) and the quality was a good as the original

Yeah it can be a bitch alright when you're ripped off on ebay.

It happened to me about a year ago, when i had gotten some money for my birthday from family and decided to buy a much needed new mixer. After finding a nice denon dnx800 going for $312 i jumped on and won it. When asking the seller questions prior to winning, everything seemed very professional and he was very prompt and courteous in his replies but after i paid for the mixer i received nothing and heard nothing since and have been met with nothing but bullshit automaton emails from ebay which leave me with less hope of a positive resolution than before.

And unfortunately I am still using the same beat up old mixer tha i had in the first place so I hope the jackass spent my money well!

btw his user name is johnammond0941 if anybody knows or has dealt with him as this is an issue which has seriously pissed me off and tbh honest id lt it go if i got even some of the money or the mixer(the one i have only plays and records out of the right channel! ) now

Sorry to hear about your problems on E-Bay.
It must seem a bit "fishy" however when certain rare records pop up so often on E-Bay. Rare Pleasure is a good example. It frequently comes up for sale on E-Bay, far more frequently in my opinion than a rare record should do. In my opinion a truly rare record shouldn't come up more than a couple of times a year on E-Bay. Rare Pleasure must have come up for sale around 20 times over the last year, far too many for a rare record and so I believe not all can be originals. Another example is Spanish Hustle by Fatback band, there are 3 copies for sale on E-Bay at the moment and there's been numerous for sale in the past few months! Not all of these can be originals.
I'm also suspicious of any rare disco track from 30 years ago in mint condition. The law of averages says that these great tracks (remember many were issued to DJ's only and not the public and therefore were likely to have been played/abused heavily in clubs) should not be in such good condition after all this time. I know collectors prefer mint but there's something to be said for used condition records as they are more likely to be the genuine article. :D
