It's been a while since I've done a topic in this forum. This is a nice set because a lot of the songs are good and extended. I've really been enjoying Cher's Take Me Home in particular. It was just OK to me when I first heard it but now I'm really digging on it. I wonder how many of you have had songs you've really grown to appreciate?

A long time ago, when I was first starting out around here, I remember folks complaining about this box set--BUT I think it's damn good. Most of the complaining was about NOT getting the longest versions, BUT I checked it out and approx. 75% or more of the cuts say they're the 12" and sometime the "promo only" 12" mix. Being a new kid on the block, I held my tongue. Hard to believe I was once a "Shy Boy", huh???? I heard that.

One disappointment was the short version of Paul Jabara's "Pleasure Island". The long version would have been most appreciated.

    One mo thing.

A lot of Donna Summer's extended versions are included in the Casablanca Box Set.

BUT, doesn't the DIVA deserve a 4 disc box set of her own. There are lotsa Greatest Hits compilations, BUT NONE ARE DEFINITIVE.

They all have various short or shortened versions alongside occasional 12" versions.

How nice to actually have ALL the extended versions of the Hits and the best of the LP tracks in one set. I know I would like to program that one.

You know what song I'm really digging right now? "212 N. 12th" by Salsoul Orchestra. Sure, I liked it when I first got it but now, it's like I'm really listening to it and discovering this great piece of music. Man, I could put this on in the car and just GO!

I love the Box set although I skip over the Parliament style tracks. A full Pleasure Island is what I miss along with a longer version of Romeo and Juliet but people here say the 12" mixes are bad so I made my own 10 min version. However, I have another question.

I never heard of an extended version of Thank God It's Friday until I got the set. Then recently (it may have been here) I heard there was another better extended version. Does anyone know if it is true?

I only am aware of two versions-the album version and the 12" from the promo which is the same as on the Casablanca box set. Nonetheless check the Disco Vault and see if this is any different from what you may have.

I read somewhere that the UK 12" of "Thank God It's Friday" is a different mix than the US promo or LP version. I recently found this 12", but it doesn't have any times listed on it (FYI, it has "You're The Most Precious Thing In My Life" as the b-side). I'll compare it to the LP versions over the next few days, but I haven't heard the promo versions yet. FWIW, the label doesn't mention anything about it being a remix...

My favorite version was the 8:11 version on the Thank God It's Friday soundtrack. However, there are TWO versions of the soundtrack - one has that version and the other has a shorter one. The 12" I have clocked in at about 7:30.

Anyway, it's the same version as what's on the Casablanca set.

my recollectio of the UK 12" was it being identical to the TGIF album version (about 4 mins long). I didn't know there was a different version on the original album. I have the UK vinyl soundtrack and now have the CD, which both contain the 4 min edit.

BTW, I recently heard a completely different mix (supposed to be the first mix) of Lovin' Livin' Givin' by Diana Ross. Personally, I could tell why they pulled it and put the version that is I know and enjoy.

Yeah, the original version of "Lovin, Livin, & Givin" was released last year on (YET ANOTHER) 2 CD Greatest Hits compilation from Motown.

The original version lacks the Giorgio Moroder-inspired synth that made the remixed track sound like Diana was invading Donna Summer-land. I always thought this was a good track by Diana, although at approximately 144 BPM, too fast for most dance floors at the time, I guess. I never heard it played, except in my apartment. (By the early 1980's we were dancing to Lipps Inc.'s "Designer Music" at around 152 BPM--AND LIKING IT!!!!)

Now, since we're in the "Thank God It's Friday" LP discussion mode--I have a question for the DJ's. I'm at work now, so I don't have the LP in front of me--BUT did anyone ever notice that, for the most part, all the BPM's listed for the songs on that LP are incorrect????

I recall the most egregious error was the D.C LaRue song which is around 98 BPM, but the record lists as 114. I got totally different BPM's for MOST of the rest of the cuts, also, when I clocked them with a watch.

    Anyone else ever notice this?
