The Chantays did the original "surfer" instrumental in the Sixties. Bruce Johnston (he wrote Miss Manilow's mis-named "I Write The Songs", well ya didn't write that one!! Miss M.) was later a member of the Beach Boys, after Brian Wilson decided not to tour.
Bruce added the disco beat to the old Chantays song. I admit I never heard of this until I came to this site back in tha day. I finally found a 12" version on some re-issue without any credits--just the title.
FYI: Bruce was part of the LA Surf sound in the Sixties...as a member of the Rip-chords with Doris Day's son, Terry Melcher ("Hey Little Cobra," anyone???)![]()
from AMG:
"Pipeline" is a real strange one. Imagine Gamble & Huff re-working the Chantays' early-'60s hit. This sounds more like TSOP than "The Sound of Beach Boys," and is an interesting inside joke to end the album with. Overall, a good effort, and an indication that, perhaps, Johnston should re-record the vocals on David Cassidy's 1995 disc and release the two together on one CD. There is some really fine material on both records.
