There are two versions :)
1- The Studio 54 doorman didn't recognize Nile and Bernard as Chic producers.
2-Nile and Bernard were dressing very ridiculous clothes: crocodile boots, flowered shirts and long coats.
:)
Didn't Nile mention that last one on some VH1 show?
Nile only said they didn't get in, even though they were the invited guests of Grace Jones. He and Bernard told the doorman "this must not be the ARTIST'S entrance", explaining that they were members of the group CHIC (whose music was played INSIDE the club). But the doorman wouldn't budge and turned them away, which inspired them to go off, get drunk and write "Le Freak". I'll bet in retrospect they're glad they didn't get in, since being turned away inspired them to write that classic song. Besides, look what happened to so many of the people who DID get in to Studio 54! I know all this because the "Studio 54" is my favorite "Behind the Music" episode, and I taped it and have watched it countless times. I always put it on when I'm in a "disco nostagia" mood, which happens often, considering how much crappy music is around now.
Couldnt of been your second reason because if they were dressed in a suit & tie then that would be reason for not being allowed in. I believe the type of clothes you described would almost assure admission.Originally Written by Marcio

Nile Rodgers also told the "**** Off/Freak Out" story on a UK doc a few years back (see below) which was just as good as the one on VH-1. It also showed an ad for 54 jeans, and some club video taken of stars like Michael Jackson saying how he feels free inside the club (and no doubt freely feeled up the young bar boys, heh heh :P) And there were loadsa great interviews with all concerned too.
Nile told another story, which I don't think is on the VH-1 doc. Someone noticed a horrible smell coming from inside a building adjacent to the Studio, and managed to trace it back to the air conditioning ducts, where they found the de-composing body of a man, who had been refused entry, then tried other means to get in. :-?

As soon as I heard the name Grace Jones when Niles told the story..I thought "oh that dizzy diva "forgot" to put their names on the list."
Anyone who ever saw her perform in a club setting or worked with Miss Jones behind the scenes...would tell ya ..."that bitch is Ka-RaaaaaaaayZeeeeeeeeee!!!" :P :P :P
Was she ever on time for anything in her life? :-? :P![]()
Grace Jones was in the news here a couple of weeks ago after she hit a guard on the Eurostar Paris-London train! I think she was arrested but i've heard nothing since. :-?
I know I'm getting a bit off this topic. Grace Jones also hurled a defective TV set through the window of Crazy Eddie's 6th Avenue store. This was late 1970s, or early 1980s. For those of you who don't know, Crazy Eddie (Eddie Antar) was an electronics retailer in the NYC metro area. He was famous for selling defective stuff, and not taking it back. Ms. Jones sort of found away around his return policy.
{For you ex-Brooklynites, remember his 'return/exchange' location was on Quentin Road, not in his huge store on Coney Island Avenue. He didn't want customers making a scene in there.}
Wow....I had heard that story. Was Mike the manager at the time? (I am assuming you are an ex C.E. employee like myself)...Originally Written by dfc99bb
By the time I started working at C.E., they all had return departments. That's where I worked on Liberty Street in Manhattan.
I never worked at Crazy Eddie but the Grace Jones story got a lot of play in the tabloids, particularly because of the store's reputation.
La Jones also hit a much-respected (now dead) chat show host on national TV here in the UK in the 80s & caused alot of controversy (the clip gets shown regularly as you might expect!). She really needs to get some anger management therapy.![]()
That was Russell Harty. Poor bloke. Did he ever recover from it properly?
Her temper hasn't stopped her from marrying a rich Viscount.
I knew it was Russell. I didn't think the US people would know who he was so i didn't say the name. I don't think he ever did recover from that incident!
He died about five years afterwards, no fault of Gracie's, but because he was taken 'ill'. And had to be looked after during his final days by his male 'friend'![]()
