The first minidisc compilation I put together is probably my favourite - all the tracks featured are from the year 1977 - the year I got into disco music. It is not a complete list of all the tracks I wanted as I ran out of space, so some time in the future there will be a part 2.

    Here are the tracks:

    ROY AYERS - Running Away (Blax - don't say a word )
PEOPLE'S CHOICE - Jam Jam Jam (All Night Long)
PHILADELPHIA INTERNATIONAL ALL-STARS - Clean Up the Ghetto
CJ AND CO - Devil's Gun
GLADYS KNIGHT AND THE PIPS - Baby Don't Change Your Mind
OLYMPIC RUNNERS - Keep It Up
    BRUCE JOHNSON - Pipeline
JAMES BROWN - Get Up Offa That Thing (It was 1976 but I heard it in the UK clubs in 1977!)
    SHALAMAR - Uptown Festival
    SLAVE - You And Me
    EL COCO - Cocomotion
DENNIS COFFEY - Wings Of Fire
    CELI BEE - One Love
T CONNECTION - Do What You Wanna Do
FAT LARRY'S BAND - Center City
MUNICH MACHINE - Get On The Funk Train (edited by me)
MECO - Theme From Star Wars (edited)
EDDIE HENDERSON - Say You Will
KOOL AND THE GANG - Open Sesame
    COMMODORES - Brick House
NEW YORK PORT AUTHORITY - I Got It
UNDISPUTED TRUTH - You + Me = Love (7 -inch only)
    ODYSSEY - Native New Yorker
JOE TEX - Ain't Gonna Bump

    To go into Part 2:
    PARLIAMENT - Flashlight
    RITCHIE FAMILY - Quiet Village
UNDISPUTED TRUTH - You + Me = Love (LP version)
PETER BROWN - Do You Wanna get Funky
    etc etc

If it moves - funk it!!

Jazz, this MD is ALMOST perfect! You know why. (I didnt say nothing  )

    Some of my faves:
COMMODORES - Brick House: Real funk, specially the 12" version.

NEW YORK PORT AUTHORITY's: I'm speachless, wow!

PEOPLE'S CHOICE's: Real Gem, gem, gem!!

JAMES BROWN's: The old man rules!!

PARLIAMENT's: Crazy funk, I love them.

    On the disco side:

    ODYSSEY's: Classic!

MECO's Star Wars: Meco's coolest track! I love it.

FAT LARRY'S BAND: I dig this band!

I'm really curious about the rest of the list.....I'm waiting....

    Jazz:

Love the playlist my man, knew that I would. However, this maybe the first time Blax and I disagree on something. First off, I personally love 'Running away' by Roy Ayers, 'nuff said. Second, I'm not to fond of Meco's 'Star Wars theme'. It's probably because I'm not big on Star Wars plus that song and Star Wars music was played to death in '77. Hope this doesn't ruin my honorary membership in Senhores de Groove Blax. (SMILE) As for the rest of the playlist, I'm diggin' it. Especially T-Connection, I love this band. Look forward to Part two Jazz. Blax, Senhores de Groove still rule my man!

    Dont worry, Sammy!

About Roy Ayers song: Basically I dont like those "doo bee doo" parts, are too long, and this annoyed me. My big hate for this song is just for fun.

About Meco's Star wars: It is because I,m a Star Wars/Star Trek fan, and I remember that song at that time, I dont heard that song for many years. From 1978 to 99 when I did buy a CD with it. So, I was not tired to hear it.

P.S. In fact, diversity is one of the best things in the SG brotherhood. As you Know, the SG are formed by collectors of many styles of disco. From soul to house/techno.
Not always we agree one each other but, our friendship is most important. Much more I must to say.

    Agreed 100%

Thanks for the comments, guys. Much appreciated, as always.

I put the long version of Brick House on my MD. After many years searching for the long version, I came across it on a secondhand Motown compilation LP entitled "Downtown Disco Party". A good find!! A seriously good record ..

Glad you like NYPA and PEOPLE'S CHOICE, Blax!
And glad you like Roy Ayers    and T-Connection, Sammy. I am sure that on every T-Connection record I've got, I can hear them ENJOYING making their music!! They always seemed to have a certain vibrancy (Blax - that means - buzz, vitality, bounce) in their rhythms and their music..

As you must know by know, all these tunes are very special to me, and these are the ones that got me hooked on the music!!

Some more ideas for that Part 2. You've got me excited now!!!

    DENNIS COFFEY - Free Spirit
PEOPLE'S CHOICE - Jam Jam Jam (I have a second version on a 7-inch that is different to the compilation version I have)
GARNET MIMMS - What It Is (Ouch! That IS good!)
EMOTIONS - Best Of My Love
    BOB MARLEY - Jammin'
MARVIN GAYE - Got To Give It Up (once again - it was big in the UK clubs in 1977)
LENNY WILLIAMS - Shoo Doo Foo Foo
    MANDRILL - Funky Monkey
CHARO/SALSOUL ORCH - Dance A Little Bit Closer
    MFSB - K Jee

and I shall add CON FUNK SHUN "Ffun" as it was also 1977!!

There are a number of tracks that I would like to add which I do not have

JACKSON FIVE -Let Me Show You The Way (UK Pop #1 in the Summer of '77 - GOOD GOOD MEMORIES)
TERI De SARIO - I Can Prove It (been after that for AGES!!)
and an obscure track that NOBODY remembers, and I have NEVER found ..
MISTER JUDGE - Show What You're Made Of

When you first got into the music, which tunes did it for you???

If it moves - funk it!!

Wow Jazz, Mandrill's 'Funky Monkey' and MFSB's 'K-Jee', I love those songs. Then to add one of my all-time faves 'Show you the way to go' by The Jacksons, sounds like a definite winner to me. I play 'Show you the way to go' all the time. That whole LP is fantastic as it brings back many great memories for me. As for what did it for me when I got into the music, well around '77 was when I got into it big time. However, I was into the music a couple of years before that, thus songs like the following did it for me:

    Disco Connection - Isaac Hayes
Walking in Rhythm - The Blackbyrds
Tell me something good - Rufus w/Chaka Khan
Dreaming a dream - The Crown Heights Affair
Hey girl, come and get it - The Stylistics
Walk away from love - David Ruffin
    Fopp - The Ohio Players
    Fame - David Bowie
Rock your baby - George McRae
    and anything from Barry White.

Those are just some of the few I recollect right off the top of my head that were being played in New York alot when I was growing up. It was a great period in music, one I'll never forget.

    Jazz,

the second part is great too!!!!

    I really love:

PEOPLE'S CHOICE - Jam Jam Jam
EMOTIONS - Best Of My Love: CLASSIC!!!
MARVIN GAYE - Got To Give It Up: Specially the extra long version.
MFSB - K Jee: One of the best instrumental disco track ever made!!!
CON FUNK SHUN - Ffun: I must to say FFFFFun!

BTW, talking about instrumental disco tracks, a small list of them:

    MFSB - K-Jee: of course!
    MIRACLES - Overture: Smash!!!
COMMODORES - Machine Gun: "WATCH OUT!!! DUCK!!!"
VAN McCOY - The Hustle: Masterpiece!!
    LOVE UNLIMITED ORCH.- Love's Theme
    LOVE UNLIMITED ORCH.- Satin Soul
    LOVE UNLIMITED ORCH.- Bayou
SALSOUL ORCH. - Oooh, I Love It

    That's enough for now. Peace.

    Sammy,

your entire post is OK but, this quote says everything!!!

    Now, my "early favourite" songs:

The song are from a brazilian disco compilation (1976) called "NEW YORK CITY DISCOTHEQUE". That was my first disco record. My fave track from that LP is:

    CROWN HEIGHTS AFFAIR - Dancin
THE INVITATIONS - We Dont Allow (Sit Down In Here)
    GIBSON BROTHERS - Non-Stop Dance
JUPITER SUNSET BAND - Stranger In Paradise
GIBSON BROTHERS - Come To America.

From that moment on, I was converted into BLAXMAN!!!! TA-DA!!!!

    Peace.

Blax, love the way you say " I was converted into Blaxman".

Blaxman: A music superhero here to save the world from horrible commercial sounds that infiltrate the radio airwaves and corrupts minors into buying pop garbage. Thus, the Senhores de Groove would be The Justice League of Music. A legion of music superheroes here to enlighten the masses. If this were true, commerical pop music would be your kryptonite. However, the fight for soul, disco and funk will prevail. I love it!

    Easy,

    Sam "ALL JAM"

P.S. - Some additions to your instrumentals list:

    Cocomotion - El Coco
Black water gold - The Sunshine Band
Mysteries of the world - MFSB

Sammy, I could call it......craptonite!

BTW, good addition to my list.

P.S. I have the "COCOMOTION" instrumental version, I dont LOVE it (because those strings) but, despite this, I think it is a good track.

Oh, I'm typing from the Blaxcave right now!

    Peace.

Sammy, you've done it again. You keep mentioning that DAVID RUFFIN track! You don't know how much I love that one!! The chorus is going through my head right now!!
Definitely must have been a good time to get into the music!!

Glad you like my humble offerings!

And, Blax, where do you get these instrumentals from? I know you have quite a few! An instrumental version of Cocomotion for example ..

    My favourite instrumental?

    There are two:
    WILLIE BOBO - Always There
    LONNIE LISTON SMITH - Expansions
PS Like the Superman thing ...

    Peace to you all

    Hey SAM SUPER JAM,

What can I say? Thanx for your king words about the SG crowd, but let me tell you something (just between us, you know): I could never be a superhero because... I'm FAT! I'm just a fat rat! You know, tight superhero clothes definitely will not look good on me (LOL)!

About "Cocomotion" instrumental version.......damn....I'm stumped......I cant remember from where it came to me.....sorry, I'll take a look at home, later.

About the instrumental versions in general, I get them from several sources. B-sides of 12's, special editions, bonus tracks, mp3 (shhh, dont tell it to DJ Phill) . Anyway, I get them from anywhere around the world, it's not easy but, it's my musical fetish, you know. So, I can move moutains for a good instrumental track. It's a superhero job, you know.

    That's right Zeca.

But I'm at work now, and a co-worker next to me was playing some "N'STINK" track near to me. You know the "Craptonite" issue, uh? My memory was drained by that....thing.

    Thanx for your guidance, again.

    Note to the readers:
Fosfosol is a medicine to make the memory better. I dont know if works fine but, I'll check it out.

    Blax,

"Craptonite", I love it. This superhero thing is better than I expected. I mean Zeca even called me Sam "Super Jam". Now all I gotta do is play Jimmy Castor's 'E-Man Groovin' and transform myself into Super Jam.

    "SUPERPEOPLE" by The Notations.

WHAT A SONG!!!! It could be our ultimate weapon!

    SUPERMAN? CRAPTONITE? SUPER JAM? BLAXCAVE?

    As for me? .....

    Call me MISTER SUPERBAD !!!!

BTW Did you guys ever get to hear The Batman Theme by ULTRAFUNK on TK records? I think it's an absolute scorcher!! What a bass line it's got!! Absolutely hypnotic!! Guess you must have that one, Blax, as it's an INSTRUMENTAL

And don't forget LAVERNE BAKER with "Batman To The Rescue" from the 1960's!

I NEVER like HERBIE MANN'S Superman - it did nothing for me - it always sounded to me like a load of disco dross. Sorry, folks!

You're right!! "BATMAN" by Ultrafunk it's dizzy!! The bassline is wild!!

P.S. Your theme song could be "SUPERBAD" by James Brown.

    EEEEEEOOOOOOWWWW! HIT ME!!!

As I said in my comments against one or two tracks, some of them did come out in 1976, but they were still being played in the clubs I went to, when I started going to discos in 1977.
