A dialogue between Cyndi Lauper and Giorgio Moroder

Massarsky remembers. "At one point, we were all in a coffee shop across the street from the studio, and she looked at Moroder and said, ‘So, George, what kind of music do you listen to?’ And Moroder said, Well, ah, what do you mean?’ She said, "Well, I mean, are you into Buddy Holly? Ya like Elvis? Whaddya think of Eddie Cochran?’ And Moroder’s going: ‘Who are these people?’ She goes, ‘George, there are the roots of rock & roll. You wanna produce me, you’ve gotta understand this stuff. Who’re yer influences?’ And Moroder goes: ‘I am an original. I only listen to Giorgio Moroder.’

well, I guess we'll never know if he was serious or not but I've never bought any recordings by Buddy Holly or Eddie Cochran either, though I've owned several of their songs covered by others. It's even debatable exactly how original Moroder's work is (I, without question, had heard electronic music before I heard Moroder), but if he seems proud of (or even arrogant about) his accomplishments you sure can't blame him....one of the most influential and imitated writer/producers in music history. He's my second favorite (Holland/Dozier/Holland are my VERY favorites).

That's interesting on so many levels!

Cyndi had the opportunity to work with Moroder (could have resulted in some hits but in the long run, might not have done much for the credibility she seems to have among her fans and in the industry).

    Cyndi challenging Moroder.

Moroder being clueless about music (although I assume he knew ELVIS!)

Moroder, of course, being crazy and only listening to himself!

It's not really arrogant not to know who those people are. With the exception of Elvis, if you asked most music listening people under the age of 30 who those people were, you'd most likely get the same response. You might even get that about Elvis.
