    Full-length epics played in clubs

Quite often while driving to and from work I listen to disco concept albums all the way through, such as Hunchback, Romeo and Juliet, Evita, Judas Iscariot/Simon Peter and Pinocchio.

I'd be interested in how often these were played full-length in the clubs, either a single side or the entire album. You'd have a hell of a job dancing to much of side two of Hunchback, so I guess that didn't get much of a full-length play.

    Full length epics.

    Well, I've heard in various nightclubs around the South;

I feel love (Full 15 min Patrick Cowley mix) - Donna Summer

MacArthur Park Suite (17.47 Lp mix) - Donna Summer

From East to West (whole of side one) - Voyage

From here to Eternity (14 min LP version) - Giorgio

Wouldn't mind hearing the From East to West album in a club, lazy DJ or not! I'm more interested in how often full album sides (or both sides) were played, rather than single, overly long songs. I'm sure I Feel Love was played in its entirety many times...

I don't recall entire concept LPs played at any disco I ever attended--usually just the key/hit cuts and then mix in something else. But, never say never. However, I assume that few dancefloor patrons wanted that kinda endless song cycle.

The Festival "Evita" usually got two successive tracks worked into the mix...I have a Troc party tape where 2 Evita tracks are played and then later-- two more played together.

If I had to dance to The Hunchback of Notre Dame in its entirety...I'd go home. :P

I don't recall ever an entire side played on a concept album. As Marky eluded to the dancers would get bored.I tended to not let cuts extend much beyond 5-6 min before mixing out of them.

It was (is?) considered cheating among DJs I knew to play a full lengh side of a Mixed record, (especially during peak hours) as anyone that owns the records can tell you are not doing any Djing, this was considered to be worse than playing a mixed Tape of a previous night, having said that, many of this full lengh recordings were still used during Dead nights when very few cared about what was playing, or late (or early morning) when every one was gone for the night and the place was soon to close for the night, I also used them early in the night before the place got going, especially if the club also featured a Restaurant and the volume had to be kept down and nobody care to dance yet....

I used MacArthur Park Suite, Voyage, Seventeen suite(Marlena Shaw), Boris Meddley(sp) and pretty soft stuff like that, even into the 80's..by then all this songs were oldies... .

Depending on the night and/or how 'old' the album was at the time, the opposite was true for me. I remember Voyage "East to West" receiving full play on both sides for quite some time. Same was true for "Romeo & Juliet".

However, I assume that few dancefloor patrons wanted that kinda endless song cycle.
:o Oh, baby. If you dared cut "Romeo & Juliet", especially Side 2, consider yourself jobless. These children would read you to no end.

this is true of my area too when the songs first arrived, I should have mention that in my post, but after a few weeks at most Djs began to experiment and hardly ever play the full lengh side much again..

I know as a patron I wouldn't stay on the floor throughout a singular song when played too long .... On the other hand , at times, I would stay on the floor endlessy if a hardworking DJ "kept " me there.

When DJing , I always played longer songs with the full intention to mix sooner than later. For one thing playing something for twenty minutes was boring... and most the time the crowd didn't want that. Early in the night it was often acceptible , because both you and the crowd were still warming up. Working too hard early on could even sound annoying . As the night progressed you were expected to intensify . But I watched the floor. There were those times when you could tell it would kill the room to end the song ... if the crowd was smiling and moving and the floor was full ...let it go ....

I wonder if the success of "Love To Love You Baby" mislead some producers about what the general acceptable length of a dance record would be.

discussing about full length versions I remembered that one of my favourite is/was "beauty...wages of sin" by Santa Esmeralda. Unfortunately I am not a dj (its too late now, I am 34 years old) ,so my opinion could not be such professional as yours ,but I think that is one of the greatest full length epic versions ever made.I am wondering if someone has ever played the full length of "Beauty"

I remember being at a teen disco back in 1979 (I was a teenager so it was OK) and I remember the DJ playing the ENTIRE "Fever" album. Side 1 which starts off with "Beat Of The Night" was played midway through the evening; Side 2 which starts off with "Pump It Up" was played towards the end.

The result? No one complained and, in fact, it had me rushing to the record store the next day to buy it!

In summer 1978 I danced to the whole of MacArthur Park Suite, from the first to the last note, at The Anvil NYC. The dance floor was packed !

Oh, yeah...certainly The MacArthur Park Suite was played in its entirety...I was talkin' bout playing side one of a record and then mixing into side 2 and playing it in its entirety. ok, MAYBE Romeo & Juliet... :P
