    Is Disco Latin Music?

I know that back in the day, many people in the media claimed that Disco was "black music," which was to say that it was R & B . . . but a lot of my favorite disco tunes were never played on R & B radio. At the same time, I recall some black musicians stating very forcefully that disco was NOT "black music." Recently, I spoke with a Mexican-American woman who is heavily into dance music, and she felt that Disco was just another category of Latin music, not unlike Salsa or Cumbia or Merengue or Reggaeton. Does anyone out there agree? Is Disco Latin music? And if so, what are the ethnic roots? Cuban? Dominican? Puerto Rican? Spanish?

Ahh the strange beauty of Disco. So many claim ownership of it now, while there are some who even today will never admit to being a part of it.
I think disco was all of that including Latin. The genre had many elements which in my view only added to it's beauty and strong appeal

There are Latin influences in Disco music. Remember SAL Soul Orchestra (Vince Montana Jr. claims to have created the Disco beat).

The Hustle also has Latin influences.

When you stop laughing, you may want to reflect on some of the classic disco hits with overt Latin influence: Debbie Jacobs' "Don't You Want My Love," Santa Esmeralda's "Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood," La Flavour's "Mandolay," Pattie Brooks' "The House Where Love Died," The Gibson Brothers' "Cuba," Festival's "Don't Cry For Me, Argentina," Donna Summer's "Heaven Knows" and numerous others.

Great response, Paul. Couldn't have said it better. The Latin flavor enhanced the mix.
