ol' Roddy is prominently featured in the current edition of AARP(for those who are unaware, that the American Association of Retired Persons). His article carries the heading, "Do Ya Think I'm SIXTY?"
******
I don't read this as a disco slam. It's more about the lyrics and having to parade about the stage ranting about how sexy he is. He went on to do "Passion" and "Young Turks " both uptempo dancibles .
******
Another thing that the article fails to mention is that a big part of the fiasco behind the song is that the main riff was unwittingly plagarized from a tune Rod heard in Brazil. IIRC, Rod realized and acknowledged his mistake, and donated all the royalties from the tune to charity.
hmmmm, so embarassing that he recently allowed it to be remixed and wound up charting with it again!

The Pounding Drums, The Flashing Lights...
Surely those are the right credentials for a disco choon? Blatant vainglorious narcissism. And, Spandex pants   :lol:Originally Written by remicks
I loved 'Young Turks'. Wasn't it called 'Young Hearts' at first, but they had to change the name as a song out at the time, already had that title?
'Tonight I'm Yours' was good too. He was at his peak during the early '80s
Hey, I remember a very good video of this song with Carmine Appice and...and...and naked boobies :o

I think that ten, , twenty , twenty-five years of prancing about doing that song has tainted his recollections. He couldn't foresee that it would become one of his signature songs that would follow him the rest of his life. Probably isn't as much fun to do as time passes. He sure didn't seem too bothered about it the time though , in those spandexes. :D AND it took him to # 1 for four weeks !!... in the middle of the disco explosion, there was Rod Stewart on top of them all .....not so bad !

does anyone remember the piss take kenny everett did on that at the time? kenny dressed up as rod in his tight pants and was miming that number, slowly his ass was getting bigger and bigger till it was so big he fell over and couldnt get up CLASSIC
Yep, I remember it as being hilarious. Kenny's sadly missed (and a little forgotton also I'm afraid). No actor dared to play a female part without shaving beard and moustache off. Kenny did :D
DD, that particular Kenny Everett sketch made it into the recent top 50 comedy sketches of all-time on Channel 4! Didn't 'Do ya think I'm sexy' copy a Paulinho Da Costa track?
No it's Taj Mahal by Jorge Ben and also the strings are lifted from Bobby Womack's If You Want My Love.Originally Written by SandraDee
Interesting string, but just FYI, the title was "Da Ya Think I'm Sexy" not "Do Ya Think I'm Sexy." "Passion" was not an uptempo dancible; it was a dark song. "Young Turks" was uptempo but dark in topic.
Ol' Rod, was still wearing his tight pants when he got to #1 with "Baby Jane". Didn't his image get a bit of a dent, when his main squeeze said he wouldn't service her three times a night, as he was too old now?
I always wondered if "Young Turks" received any club play.
It's tempo reminds me of "Maniac" from Flashdance.
you're right about maniac and flashdance.good call.i always hated both.young turks/tonight i'm yours is really up there in bpm.i'd say 140 bpm.i like just about everything about rod stewart has put out.i would never play it outside my home or car though.and let me not forget his recent visits to old remakes.i don't care for them.but if it wasn't for the successful albums there wouldn't be any of the great songs like baby jane and the killing of georgie.

I'll immediately remove my 12" extended versions of "Passion" and "Turks" from my dance records.
It's weird the way that Rod went all disco-y. Before, he released mid tempo stuff like "You Wear It Well", "Maggie May", and the brill "Sailing".

Rod Stewert has always been a big concert performer. Shows that are overly laden with ballad/ slower material are too lulling . There needs to be a mix of tempos . In the same way many rock acts of the eighties also did those power ballads... Rod needed to spice up his act ! And when he was still fortyish he enjoyed bouncing around on stage parading his sexiness .. now that the years have passed .. he now wants to sit on a stool and perform standards ... The audiences probably still prefer a show which includes more "Passion" though .....
What's the song length on the 12" version of "Young Turks" and who remixed it?
