    Going Back To My Roots

I am pretty certain that there were a few variants of this track around - obviously the Lamont Dozier, and the Odyssey version, but recently reminiscing I seem to recall a more 'funkier'/harder/faster version with a male vocalist I think I first heard around 1977. Is my memory playing tricks or was there another version floating around at that time?

EDIT: It's not the Richie Havens one either!

The only other version that I just found on some of my CDs is from around 1990 by F.P.I. Project. It's that typical UK House sound of that period.

The male artist must have been Richard Havens. He did a cover version around 1980. His cover have been "covered" , reissued and remixed several times in the 90's and 00's.

F.P.I.Project were Italian but did use a British vocalist Sharon Dee Clarke who also sang on Nomad's early 90s house/pop stuff. She also played a nurse in Dennis Potter's 'Singing Detective' TV series, if anyone's interested! :-?

No, this was in 1977 - I have the Lamont Dozier version (both 12" & album) and the tempo of the one I remember is faster, and the vocals more 'growly'. I think the Richie Havens version is a bit 'lame' & Odyssey's too poppy for my tastes.
