Why are people so surprised when an EXTREMELY, CRAZY RARE NEAR MINT CONDITION RECORD that has not sucessfully been legally reissued OR QUALITY booted, sells for a lot of money?
Are we jealous? Did we miss the bid? Does the truth hurt?
    WAAAH~!! 1,275 dollars, WAAAH~!! ebay, WAAAH~!!

EVerybody say after me: No such thing as too high. No such thing as "eBay madness". There IS such a thing as buyers...and sellers. In an AUCTION FORMAT....the truth often comes out.
No one is FORCED to pay an extravagant sum unless THEY INITIATE IT.

I REALLY THINK THAT SOME OF THESE PEOPLE ARE NUTS WITH THESE PRICES.....I DON'T KNOW ABOUT THE REST OF YOU GUYS....BUT WAS "FAMILY TREE" REALLY THAT GREAT OF A RECORD TO WARRANT $1,200????? YEAH ITS RARE, BUT WHO CARES......I MEAN DID ANYONE EVER PLAY IT ANYWHERE???? FUNNY, BUT I HAVE 30 YEARS WORTH OF BILLBOARD MAGAZINES AND NEVER REMEMBERED SEEING "FAMILY TREE" IN ANY OF THEM. I CAN SEE A DIE HARD DISCO COLLECTOR (LIKE ME!!!) SPENDING A BOATLOAD ON A REALLY GREAT SONG ON A RARE 12" PRESSING (A U.K. PROMO OF "YOUNG HEARTS RUN FREE" OR A U.S. PROMO OF "LOVE MACHINE")...I REMEMBER SEEING A U.S. 12" OF "LOVE MACHINE" SELL PRIVATELY (YES...BEFORE EBAY RULED THE WORLD AND DICTATED WHAT WE ALL WILL PAY FOR RECORDS!!!) FOR $400......AND THAT WAS 10 YEARS OR SO AGO......ALL I KNOW IS THAT I MAY JUST QUIT MY JOB AND SELL MY COLLECTION ON EBAY.....IF I CAN GET THE PRICES THAT THESE RECORDS ARE GETTING I CAN RETIRE!!!! PS: FOR ANYONE WHO CARES.....THERE WAS A PRETTY DECENT "RE-ISSUE" OF FAMILY TREE SELLING IN NYC ABOUT A YEAR OR SO AGO.....SAVE YOURSELF $1,200 AND GRAB ONE FOR $10.....

DJMIKEYD, you made some good points and OVERRULED yourself on others.

That was what you asked. You answered your own question when you posted

The point being as I stated that you pay what you WANT for WHAT you want....and no one is forcing you. And lets see if TEN YEARS AGO someone paid 400 for Love Machine.......they would pay exactly WHAT now? And will that be "too much" for someone?

Do you get it? It's a PERSONAL decision dammit~!! I would not pay 25 dollars for a Love Machine 12", but RESPECT (and would not say you were wrong) you if you want to pay 400-700 dollars for it~!! WHY? Collectables are ultimately PERSONAL. it is worth it to YOU, not the WORLD. Why are you pandering for help

Not really, that was the one I was referring to when I mentioned that the quality was not good. And uh, collectors don't WANT BOOTLEGS. You did say that you were a collecotr right? Your argument is waaay too faulty...but nice try anyway.

BTW- So, what if eBay sets the standards now instead of some UK dealers in Goldmine magazine?....it's called progress.
And it is democracy, WORLDWIDE democracy at that. But all you jealous guys dont get it do you? You should look at it as if a real estate agent has just told you that YOUR neighborhood is NOW the hottest. Which would mean that YOUR house is now worth more. Would you argue with the real estate agent? UNLESS OF COURSE you dont have any of the records in question? That just brings up my jealousy theory again.

What is it exactly that makes this particular record so desirable?? I understand that it is rare .... but a rare record that was crap ... should still be considered crap ... What's its story? It must be important in some way. A first and only . Maybe it was just a great song.... if so ,why didn't it break-out? ... was it a regional hit ? Lastly, What the heck did it sound like/ similar too? ... :-?

if this is such a bad, overpriced record, then why did someone with the ebay nickname of "djmikey-d" bid $900?

    OOOH~!! BBBUUUURRRNNNN~!!
Now, I wanna read THAT explanation...(is it true? he bid?) I have no access to eBay at work so I'll reserve total gloating until I can verify.
BTW- I am only guest/anonymous because I am at work. Otherwise I am a newbie here....but not a TOOL.

It is the first SHARON BROWN record.
It is one of those lower BPM dance type "boogie" records that when released got no radio play, and presumably had no real muscle behind it (promotional) to get the record PLACED at radio or with key DJs. It is one of MANY records that while not a hit the FIRST time around....has undergone a critical reapparaisal. And since it was scarce when it was out.....to find it NOW is...well about 1,275 dollars worth it seems.
It is on a couple of compilations (which only feeds the desire to own the original), so seek it out to HEAR...you may LIKE it. It is NOT a bad record at ALL. Not GREAT, but that's just my OPINION...you may have a differing opinion.
Also the song on the B-side (dont remember) has a BREAK to it....which makes it desirable to the beatheads/funk/rappers....I have never heard it (the b-side) so i dont really know.

Family Tree - You cannot be serious...!!

FIRST OF ALL.......THANKS FOR ALL THE LOVE.....SECOND.....SAY WHAT YOU WANT ABOUT ME, BUT JUST TO LET YOU KNOW WHY I BID ON THE RECORD......
I PAY OR IN THIS CASE BID HIGH ON CERTAIN ONES JUST TO UPGRADE COPIES IN MY COLLECTION....OVER THE PAST COUPLE OF YEARS I HAVE BEEN OFFERED (ON AND OFF OF EBAY) A LOAD OF MONEY FOR ALOT OF RARE 12"S.......AND LIKE MOST COLLECTORS, I WILL NOT SELL MY ONLY COPY....IN THE CASE OF THE FAMILY TREE, I WAS OFFERED NICE MONEY FOR MY COPY BY ANOTHER COLLECTOR WHO GAVE UP ON EBAY AND WHO IS A PERSONAL FRIEND OF MINE, SO I JUST BID WHAT I THOUGHT WOULD BE THE MOST ANYONE WOULD BE WILLING TO PAY FOR IT........AND I WOULD THEN SELL OFF MY O.K. CONDITION COPY TO OFFSET MY COST FOR A MINT ONE......SO IF I PAID $900 FOR A MINT ONE ON EBAY AND SOLD MINE PRIVATELY FOR $600...DO THE MATH...THE MINT ONE ONLY COST ME $300.......AND I ONLY PAID $50 BUCKS FOR MY FIRST COPY......SO HOW I AM A TOOL?????? I WAS JUST STATING THAT SOMEONE WOULD JUST ACTUALLY DROP $1200 FOR A COPY IS CRAZY....I REALLY WOULDNT PAY THAT IF I DIDNT HAVE A METHOD TO MY MADNESS........THIS KIND OF COLLECTING AND WHEELING & DEALING IS THE STUFF THAT GOES ON WITH THESE BIG RECORDS WHERE I AM FROM......IT MAY NOT BE LIKE FINDING A $1,000 RECORD IN A THRIFT SHOP FOR $1 BUT IT WORKS FOR ME.....AND AS FAR AS THE "LOVE MACHINE" GOES...I WAS POINTING OUT THAT THAT IS AN EXAMPLE OF A RECORD THAT ALWAYS SOLD FOR BIG MONEY.......NOT SOMETHING THAT WAS A $2 PIECE OF CRAP FOR YEARS UNTIL SOMEONE LIKE DIMITRI OR DAVID MANCUSO, OR DANNY KRIVIT PUT ON A COMPILATION CD AND THEN EVERYONE KILLED THEMSELVES TO GET A 12" COPY......AND WHY AS SOON AS SOMETHING GOES FOR BIG MONEY ON EBAY, DOES EVERYONE SEEM TO PUT IT ON THEIR WANT LIST???? (EXAMPLE BEING DENISE LaSALLE- "I'M SO HOT") IN YEARS OF COLLECTING & BUYING & SELLING NO ONE EVER ASKED FOR THAT RECORD....UNTIL IT WENT FOR LIKE $700 ON EBAY NOW EVERY ONE WANTS IT.....WHY???? SOMEONE PUT IT ON A COMPILATION I THINK. I AM ACTUALLY SORRY I EVEN POSTED ANYTHING BECAUSE IT SEEMS THAT THE PROBLEM HERE IS NOT THAT THE RECORD WENT FOR BIG MONEY, BUT THAT THERE ARE ALOT OF MEAN SPIRITED PEOPLE HERE WHO SEEM TO BE JEALOUS AT ANYONE WHO HAS THE MEANS TO PAY HIGH PRICES FOR RECORDS.......MY WHOLE POINT WAS THAT THE SONG ITSELF IS NOT A PARTICULARLY GREAT SONG AND THAT I NEVER DID UNDERSTAND THE CRAZE FOR IT.......MAYBE I JUST DIDNT WORD THE WHOLE THING RIGHT..BUT THATS THE POINT I WAS TRYING TO MAKE......
PS: ABOUT THE RE-ISSUE, I MENTIONED IT BECAUSE I KNOW THERE ARE GUYS WHO ACTUALLY LIKE THAT RECORD, BUT CANT AFFORD TO PAY HIGH PRICES FOR IT.....JUST TRYING TO POINT IT OUT TO THEM THAT A RE-ISSUE EXISTS.

Thanks to the guest who backed me up!!!! I'll do just that....keep adding them to the vault........and just to make the jealous people more jealous.....i could have easily paid $1500 for it without even sweating it  ........didnt think it would ever get that high....not since the last one on ebay sold for "only" $700+.........so i thought my bid would be enough to grab it.......oh well.....there's always next time

Well the Barrabas "woman" 12" i bid on was for another friend of mine who wanted to be anonymous (he is a record producer and was busy working on a very popular album at the time the auction was going on and he was new to ebay and blah blah blah) so he told me to put a mega high max bid just to win it at any cost. (he has very deep pockets as you might expect from a producer of a very popular multi-platinum album)....if i remember correctly the Barrabas ended up going for $2000++ it was the green vinyl edition, if i remember correctly. but it was 100% his record, I had nothing to do with it except putting in the bids....he totally paid for it.
The barrabas copy I have I paid like $300 for about 8 years ago or so. Most of the US stuff I bought over the past few years, like I said before, was to upgrade copies or simply get doubles for my collection. Most of the US 12"s I posted on this site were originally given to me by a former Disco DJ (who was my cousin) who retired and moved across country and couldnt take his vinyl with him. The Wild Cherry was actually 1 time i was lucky and found it at a record show for $10.....but I havent seen one in a while. Did you check out the scans I put in the disco vault on this site???

come to think of it, the Wild Cherry 12" was a Belgium pressing not a UK 12". I will post a scan of it in the vault soon.

MickeyD keep those Scans coming, you've got a great collection of classic originals that I truly admire, don't let anyone put you down for indulging your passion, it is your money and you do with it what you see fit, nothing pisses me off more than anyone telling me (or anyone else) how to spend my hard earn money :x the purpose of any auction is to sell the item to the highest bidder, if you can't match the going price, tough! Get over it!

MickeyD on 8/15/01 you paid exactly 2025.00 USD for the green Barrabas 12". :D I saved the auction for research purposes :D As far as my memory goes it was actually the first time I saw this cut on 12", well except for my mid 80's copy from the local Republic of Hialeah

    Thanks Mixmachine.....
Wow. I cant believe that Barrabas auction was 4 years ago.....it doesnt seem that long ago. Anyway, I am going to try and dig out some more cool US promo 12"s this week and post the scans....I have been slacking lately. This music and these records are truly my one enjoyment in life......they have taken a back seat to my work recently, but whenever I have spare time I like to dig into the shelves and listen to the music and just relax and enjoy them....and cruise Ebay for more rare ones to add to the vault.......
ps: a couple of years ago (and actually there is one up on ebay now) there was a pretty decent bootleg of Barrabas out there....I know real collectors dont like bootlegs, but it beats the hell out of spending $2000 if you cant do it...check it out.

In all seriousness, can anyone tell me why "Woman" on 12" is so sought-after? Isn't it the same as the LP/7" version, which is quite easy to obtain?

It is the same as the album, and the LEGAL re-release (by Atlantic during the early 90s?). The worth to collectors and DJs is not cut-and-dried. Some like it as an early example of the 12" inch culture from another country, and its rarity because of that. Some like it because of the fact that it is a good record, and want the FIRST version made into the 12" format.
Some are completists. Some (mainly DJs) are into the "aaahhh" factor. "Trainspotting" is BIG among DJs. They like to compare their collections like anyone, there is a sort of PRIDE that manifests itself (with the help of healthy DJ paychecks~!!) in the phenomenon of white label pressings and even No label verifiable pressings trading for high sums.
(Insider joke...they like to 'STING' each other).
I have friends that are DJs that I have offered to give RARE records too...and they sometimes REFUSE~!! because it is not a white label promo (WLP) or the FIRST pressing.
A GREAT example of this is CROWN HEIGHTS AFFAIR "Say a prayer for two" original promo on De-Lite records. A LOT of those early De-Lite/Polygram records sound like CRAP.
In the late 80s (I think) there was a licensed series of reissues on ELEKTRA. They re-released the Crown Heights record with lovingly remastered audio. It sounds GREAT. Play it on a large (or small) system and WOW~!! Because of the time period in which it was released...it is RARE. But a DJ/collector would NOT want it~!! THEY want the original pressing~!! You would THINK a DJ would want the version that SOUNDED better. But more often than not it is the "prettyness" factor that overrules all. There is more to it of course. I am sure someone else will weigh in with some info.....

Graham the original/reissued 7" are both 3:25 long the Mexican 12" is 5:05 the same as the Lp at 5:07, remember the Mexican 12" is also on green vinyl which I guess makes it more rare, the Mexican reissue sold for 26.99 back in 2001, I was to try to get one of this but settled instead for an original sealed Lp for 25:00 USD since the ballad "Cheer up" was a local favorite of the day.

Graham, I do not know for sure....but I would bet you have the original pressing before it was "restripped". Labels used to REPLACE an album track with an extended version (or another song altogether), if they felt it would increase sales of the LP.
This was done with Evelyn Champaigne King "Smooth Talk", A Pointer Sisters LP (that I do not remember the title of....sorry) Grey and Hanks "You Fooled Me", and a handful of others I am sure.

That practice is why when doing CD reissues (in my other life), I will encounter a tape that has items SPLICED IN. Handy to remember when/if you are doing a 12" compilation......go back to the LP and the 12" master MAY be stripped into the LP master tape.

Problem THEN becomes....where is the original LP version? Usually spliced at the end of the tape.....but you never know because TOO MANY engineers did not obey standard practices (like labelling boxes with DATES for example~!!).

You should not have to look TOO hard to find the version of the LP that you want. Look for a slightly different matrix number...instead of '123' it may say '123A' as an example. GOOD LICK~!!
