A good collection of songs without those dreadful 'filler' records.
Also, a good mix of old and new.
My question is, what is your criteria for a good DJ mix CD? Doe's the Mix have to be tight? Do you need sound effects? Is the music all that count? What would make you buy a DJ Mix CD.

Generally I don't enjoy mix CDs. I'd rather just have the tracks.
The impression I get from the more recent mix CDs I have heard, is that DJs have forgotten about dynamics and tension. Too many do perfect mixes (no dropped beats, double beats etc), but somehow there's no excitement. There's no feeling that the guy is on the edge and really going for it. It's almost too smooth and too perfect. Maybe it's similar to the old 'studio versus live' problem that used to affect so many musicians of different genres.
Turntablism is a different matter altogether. Those guys are amazing!!
Have to say that I agree with Quinny here.

The word evokes not just a type of music or a kind of dance or even a style of dress.It\'s also a new social order of black and white, gay and straight, rich and poor, all hot, sweaty and, most likely, high, together.
Quinny, we finally agree on something :DOriginally Written by QUINNY
But if you ever find them, check out the Hot Plate mixes. They're pretty good and have sound effects and all that stuff. What I certainly don't like are mixes that contain a few minutes of a song that I'm looking for. I do buy mixes to play on our attractions (public and certainly youth wants to hear them) but I prefer compilations with the full length versions.
The 1 mix I really do adore and that's pretty recent is the one from 2 many DJ's "As heard on radio Soulwax" coz that one is so original and innovating.
Hey Johan. Even a busted clock is right twice a day. Just Kidding Quinny. :lol:Originally Written by Videoskooter
I actually agree with the both of ya :D
Find them and destroy them!
Totally agree.Somehow the spontaneity of a live DJ mix is lost in these carefully thought out, planned mixes.I think that most former DJ's would agree that we were not programmed or committed to the same mix night in and night out but rather would ad lib as the evening progressed in response to what was happening on the floor. While making the perfect mix was what we strove for I believe that we took pride in the fact that we could pull a number of songs out of our mental libraries to mix with any given record at the expense of the perfect mixGenerally I don't enjoy mix CDs. VideoS: I admire your patriotism. Wot!! No Ben Liebrand?Originally Written by Videoskooter
BTW: Which volume(s) do you like from 2 many DJs?
Quinny, I can not be patriottic about Ben Liebrand, he's Dutch :D And no I'm not so fund of his remixes.
If you check out this link, you have the complete playlist of the Mix by 2 Many DJ's (aka The Flying Dewaele Brothers, aka The F*cking Dewaele Brothers, aka Soulwax) I'm talking about. Maybe the tracks are not really your cup of tea but it really is very well done. Even David Bowie likes this one![]()

Oops!!!   What made me think that Ben Liebrand was Belgian? Maybe that's what I first read eons ago and it stuck.
So I guess I’m the only one around this parts that enjoys mix cds/tapes, although I prefer the old style or original club mixes from back in the day, I always felt that listening to mixed disco music, even if not my own mixes, added another dimension of pleasure and anticipation to the experience, although I also never liked old school ultra slick/smooth mixing either, no drama in this style and songs are telegraphed way before they are actually mixed in, IMO losing all the energy of the mix, having said that I got a few 90’s mixed trance CDs that are complete turn off..
When I burn a set I record through line in on the comp I save the mix as file the when I burn it I can insert "track marks" at just berfore each mix the tracks are seamless & play straight through keeping the integrity of a nonstop mix but also giving me the control to jump through the tracs as well. :D
DJDynasty, that is usually what I do but when I listen to music for joy, i never really listen to myself and try to admire the stuff that I did. I prefer to listen to old tracks without them being mixed or I like to listen to old mixes from the radio like WBMX, which is always entertaining in my opinion, or Latin Rascals mixes, especially 92 KTU stuff. Even the old Hot 97 recordings attract my attention most of the time, because these are the DJ's I look up to. I think what makes a good mixed cd is something interesting in the mix, especially with all this new technology you would think the mixes would be amazing. When I hear a mix that turns me on, its usually because something in it was interesting that I never heard before. Yet what the Latin Rascals did with less technology is amazing and is tough to find on new cd's today.
I prefer listening to non-mixed CDs or recordings. I like to hear the tracks the way they were originally recorded.
Thanx for the responses ya'll, but I prefer a hot Disco or House mix when I'm driving around the City. I prefer a hot bass-line(of course),preferably a soulful Female voice ie;(Loleatta Holloway), and of course, lots and lots of bongos between the mixes, a little bit of filter bringing the bass line under and over to a climactic rise...all yesssssssss feel the beat :-? ....... euphonic copulation!
Thanx for the Input
