The 1978 Jean Yanne film "Je Me Tiens, Tu Te Tiens, Par La Barbichette" is now available on region 2 dvd. The Village People perform "Hot Cop" in a sequence that is somewhat less dated than their previously seen concert or early video clip presentations, with imaginative staging and faster than usual editing for the period. The group only has one other brief, non-singing appearance in the film, as themselves of course. The Ritchie Family girls fare better. The opening montage is priceless as they wiggle and giggle thru "La Barbichette" in colorful spilt screen. The hilarious tune is also performed during the grande finale, and we get an additional "Forever Dancing", too. French wannabe disco diva Mimi Couturier struts thru a song but doesn't make much of an impression as a performer. Her Los Angeles montage is very good, though - Mimi plays a Charlie's Angel-type lady cop who trains kung-fu moves with David Carradine, drives a sportscar and hits the dancefloor every night in a satin hotpants outfit and a red plastic shades cap - remember those? The film itself is a satire on television culture with endless spoofs on ads, awkward situation comedy and very broad performances. The soundtrack is excellent, though, as you get very loud bits and pieces of totally unrelated songs all thru the action - how does an "African Queens" relate to a car chase for example?
