    First Techno???

I was doing a little research today on techno. Listen to old techno tracks like "james brown is dead" i want to go before 1990. I stumbled upon Cybotron "Alleys of your mind" from 1981. Is this considered the first "techno" track or can early kraftwerk recordings be considered techno as well?

Klaus Schulze's and some of Tangerine Dream's works from the 70s are more techno than Kraftwerk, who were really just doing very simple pop songs done up in a futuristic theme.

Many consider Love To Love You by Donna Summer the first techno song.

    first techno record

Many people believe it is by a band called anumberofnames the track is called sharevari and they relesed it on a small label called cappriccio. It was then picked up in Canada on the Quality label.

    Hope this helps.

A Number of Names was an alias of Juan Atkins, as was Cybotron (with someone else).

I don't know if Sharevari was the first ever Techno release but he probably invented the sound a little bit more than anyone else.

Giorgio's "From Here To Eternity" I would say is the first real techno..unless theres something pure electronic with the thriving club beat earlier than 1977 I dont know about :o

Moroder and his singer Donna Summer are responsible

Jimmy has a good point - Moroder seems to have kickstarted the techno trend. Here are some other techno songs from 1977 that weren't yet mentioned in this thread:
"Disco Melody of '77" by the Montreal Synthesizer Orchestra
"Do It Again" by the Montreal Synthesizer Orchestra
    "Help Me" by the Savers
    "Black Jack" by Baciotti
"I Feel Love" by Donna Summer
"Working the Midnight Shift" by Donna Summer
"Dance into My Life" by Donna Summer
"Now I Need You" by Donna Summer
"Queen for a Day" by Donna Summer
"Gluttony" by Laurin Rinder and W. Michael Lewis

I agree, absolutely groundbreaking stuff from Giorgio Moroder like "From Here To Eternity" created the roots for techno.

    Re: 1st Techno

Between 1975 and 1985 there was a D.J. on Detroit Radio (107.5 WGPR) by the name of "The Electrifying Mojo" from 10pm to 2am. He eloquently combined his playlist with the Funk sounds of the 70's, Parliment Funkedelic ,Bootsy Collins, Stanley Clark, James Brown and the new cutting egde sounds of the 80's with groups like Prince, Kraftwerk , B52's, and Frenquency7. A group of Club DJ's and Party promoters from the west-side of Detroit(Belleville) began to identify with the music style. It bloomed to the point that eventually a dance show called "The Scene" emerged. At this point the Dance and the Music Scene was in full force. Groups from Detroit like "A Number of Names", "Cybotron", MayDay, Kevin Sanderson, began too promote the new Music as Techno. Thus the combination of Funk and Electronic gave way to the first Techno sounds like "Alleys of Your Mind" and Sari Vari.

Super D, thanks for that bit of history from the Detroit side. I always enjoyed that kind of musical mix. Love the sounds of groups like Tackhead, Ministry...

This may sound like a load of bollocks, but a few techno musos have even said they were influenced by John Carpenter's soundtracks: Assault on precinct 13 (1976) onwards
