Celi Bee was cool! She was as unique and individual as a diva as was her unusual name. She also had an interesting look, love her album cover on the Blow My Mind LP. Her big hit was "Blow My Mind", of course in the best year for disco music 1979.
Personally,I think that she was terrible bore.First of all her style wasn t so good than other disco divas Then she had a strange(Freakish) voice, especially at songs like "macho" or "superman"(She used to sing in a strangled voice),and Finally I can t realize the reasons that this artist became a superstar.
Which is your opinion about her?
Are you agree or disagree with me?[/b]

I never really got into her. Some of the songs were too cheesy even for me, others were just uninspired. A few bright moments here and there (I like "Fly Me On The Wings Of Love") but not really enough to sustain my interest. I have most of her albums simply because I found them for dirt cheap.
I always liked "Together". I remember that Crocker had it in light/medium rotation on WBLS in the early summer of '78. Have to agree with Graham, though, most of her songs like "Alternating Currents", "Macho (A Real One)" and even "Superman" were cheesier than Velveeta.
[SIGPIC][/SIGPIC]"I can see Prussia from my house!". :icon_mrgreen:
Yeah, kind of cheesy all round. Her voice wasn't much, but then neither was Madleen Kane's and I love her records. Anyway, Celi Bee scored cuz I think it was her husband (Pepe Luis Soto) who produced her records. I can just hear her now, "Pleeeeeease, honey, make me a disco diva!"
Back in the late sixties, early seventies, Celi Bee and her future husband, Pepe Luis Soto, performed on local television here in Puerto Rico with some success. At the time she was known as Celines.
Imagine my surprise when a few years, a lot of bleach and a diet, she was transformed in Celi Bee. I liked her voice quite a bit and the album version of "Fly Me On The Wings of Love" is one of my all time favorite tunes from the era.

I agree with Rab. I never liked Fly Me on the tired wings of Love, but I was crazy about "Blow My Mind", especially the DISCONET version by John Matarazzo where the intro and outro were extended.

I disagree with you because the way you phrased your ARGUEMENT is faulty.Originally Written by georgeb
WHO says she was a SUPERSTAR? She was a performer nothing MORE or LESS.
She was not then a SUPERSTAR, and time has not been kind. Time offers us the chance and perspective to reevaluate....and well 2 songs does NOT make a superstar. Especially cheesy songs. In the short term yes, (see Ashlee Simpson for a current example) in the long term NO (see Ashlee Simpson for a current example).
Donna Summer= SUPERSTAR DIVA
Pattie Brooks= STAR
Celi Bee= had a good record
See the DIFFERENCES and grading curve?

As I didn t have any informations about her success in other countries(positions on charts, raydio playlists, lives e.t.c),I characterized her as a"superstar" - you are right it was my fault-due to her great success and popularity in Greece.I remember that both songs I mentioned were on the top of of the radio playlists, especially "Superman"Also many raydio djs used to mix it with "Try me I know we can make it" by Donna Summer.Even nowdays many people remember her name and her songs. It is very strange the fact that they dont remember artists like Vicky Sue Robinson or Pattie Brooks but maybe these all happen due to bad promotion of them(In Greece)
"One Love" and "Superman" seem to be well known here in the UK. I prefer the former to the latter I have to say, as "Superman" is in the dodgy "More More More" / Silver Convention type of cheese flavoured disco.
Just MHO. 8)
She had many more hits and was very successful, I didn't know until now that She made it to Greece :oOriginally Written by DonaldCleveland
Celi Bee was very popular here in Miami’s clubs, she had a very sexy look and she performed long lines of fans waited around the block to see her show, “Superman” was released around 4/77 ( my LP notes)and was an instant club hit, this cut sounds especially good on a good loud club system and it was a perfect ‘Dance floor” record for the day, lots of effects, heavy bass, flowing strings, dancers loved it! “One Love” was perfect for the ‘Hustle” dancers, also listen to the sleaze number “Closer closer” off the same LP, good stuff, “Fly me” is another dance floor classic, although I used to play Act III (Midnite Passion) more, I just liked the bass and those ‘Uhhh Ahhh’ which I used to extend forever :D , also off this LP you have one of the most lasting ballads of the Disco era (well locally anyways) “For the love of my man”, this cut packed floors for me well into the mid 80’s, and it was also a fave in weddings parties too; I don’t remember playing “Macho” much, for me the best cut off this LP is “Together”, pretty and sleazy at the same time, sounds like Tina Charles’ style …..…”Love Drops” was played for a while and later “ I’m free” fitted right in with many ‘High Energy” hits of the early 80’s, (Lisa, Lime… ), need to check up on "blow my mind" don't remember that one :(
I personally find nothing wrong with her vocals, she’s not the best (who’s to say?) but She certainly compared well and lasted longer than many of the ‘Disco’ acts of the day (Carol Douglas, Carol Williams, Patti Brooks, Madleen Kane)
I met her once during a club show, and she was nice enough to autograph this copy for me...Thanks Celi...

The board bumped me off, I guess, that last post is mine :D
I like her a lot.
I think ONE LOVE is an exceptional song.
It was huge in DISCOS here in Brazil, and I vividly remember this song being played at COSTA BRAVA DISCO in Barra da Tijuca (Costa Brava means Wild Coast).
This venue was very beautiful because it looked a bit like a fortress, built on top of a small hill/island very close and almost attached to the shore. You had to reach the club trough a bridge from the coast cliff direct into the door of the club.
This place still exists, but the night club is gone a long time ago. As opposed to the 70's, now only the rich people have access (members of the club only).
I think there was another Celli Bee song which played a lot. It was called BOOMERANG. It was a long song.
Macho (A Real Real One) was a bore!
Sorry I didn't realise I was not logged. I posted the COSTA BRAVA message above.
I don't remember her records at the time but I've become familiar with 'One Love' & 'Superman' via CD compilations & 'One Love' is brilliant IMO but 'Superman' is a tad too 'novelty' for my taste in the same way that 'Ring My Bell' & 'D.i.S.C.O.' are! (I've also got the Herbie Mann version & that's no better despite being produced by the great Patrick Adams! :-? )
I always liked "I'm Free" 12" single from 1983.
9 minute plus cut.

I love "Blow My Mind", I think this was her biggest hit. It seems to always command the highest prices on ebay, and even copies not in the best of shape always get bid on.
