What was that Pete Lemoncello track like? Was it a 7"? Doc Severinsen "Night Journey" rings a bell somewhere - any good? Fausto Papetti's "Samba Devarao" must be something to pursue. Interesting seeing Fania All Stars: "Desafio" there as I always thought this great cut was too slow in tempo to be programmed. Was "Picadillo" off the same "Delicate & Jumpy" album spinned in places with more exotic playlists? As for Pretty Maid Company, here's a bit of trivia that won't rock anybody's world: the lead singer of the trio was called FANCY ROSY. She had arrived to Munich from Puerto Rico, and had appeared on one of the era's most popular posters in which a hand reaches out of a toilet to grab her bikini bottom. After this Rosy got to do a bit part in the tv series "Derrick" and to record the engaging Pete Bellotte-penned hitette "Pretty Maid". Rosy also had a 7" out under her own name called "I am the clown of disco town" but this Bellotte-less presentation went nowhere.

Jussi, I couldn't find the Lemongello track in Marky's thread, but if the song is "Come Closer, Baby", then imagine a poor man's Jack Jones(I mean a REALLY poor man's Jack Jones, we're talkin' homeless here) doing a mushy slow-hustle song. Lemongello was a famous (in his own home)lounge singer who became notorious for selling his albums through memorably cheesy TV commercials, making him the harbinger for everyone from Slim Whitman to Zamfir. He was memorably spoofed on SNL by Chevy Chase, who portrayed a character called "Peter LemonMoodRing", an amalgam of Lemongello and another cheesy item sold through 70's TV commercials.

The song listed was "Can't Get You Out Of My Mind" by Peter Lemongello on the Lemongello label!!!! Ranked at #15 on the retail sellers list from 1976 at one of the retail outlets.

The odd name sounds like I've heard it before--BUT I know nothing about him.

Thanks for the info, people. Now I've got to find that Lemoncello track before I'm thru. Hopefully it resembles "Volare" by Al Martino. This was ridiculously big in Europe and came in at least 3 different shapes. Best was a 5 minute version on an album with a couple of other disco numbers and a greenish sleeve design. The other, earlier album realese also called "Volare" only had the short 7" version.

    Hi JussiK,

you're probably talkin' about "SAMBA DE VERÃO", a BOSSA NOVA classic originally recorded by MARCOS VALLE in the 60's (he wrote the song with his brother PAULO SÉRGIO VALLE). It's a well known song, and FAUSTO PAPETTI's cover surely is an easy listening one. I recommend you the original version by MARCOS VALLE.

    Peace,

I sure have loved the Marcos Valle sounds for decades. Incidentally, the man visited Helsinki last month and gave a killer concert, doing not just stuff from his latest "Escape" cd but lots of older tunes as well. Impeccable. The disco-era Brazilana I've been spinning lately include José Barrense's DURUMDUM, Jorge Ben's FIO MARAVILLA and PAIS TROPICAL, Harold Lobo's TRISTEZA and Wando's BAYLA ( NA BAIXA DO SAPA TIERO).

    Hey JussiK,

MARCOS VALLE is one of the greatest musicians Brasil produced in more than 30 years. He plays, sing, composes and looks real nice. A melodic genius, for sure. You probably won't believe me when I say that MARCOS VALLE is not well known by brazilians today. It's a real shame. These days, the guy spend more time outside BRASIL - his music is much more appreciated in USA and EUROPE. After many many years of absence, MARCOS VALLE did a concert last year here in Porto Alegre - but it wasn't a solo concert, unfortunately. I think we will wait years and years for another concert by the man here - you'll probably see more MARCOS VALLE's concerts in HELSINKI, FINLAND, than me, in PORTO ALEGRE, BRASIL.

A few months ago I met a european DJ here in PORTO ALEGRE. A very friendly guy who lives in Germany and came to BRASIL to search the music he loves so much - 70's MPB, basically. My friend DJ discovered that here in BRASIL this music is not played on radio stations or TVs anymore and people don't even care for the best brazilian artists, unfortunately. You'll hear JOYCE, ELIS, MARCOS VALLE, EDU LOBO and other great brazilian artists on radio stations and parties only in London or Helsinki, not on Brasil. Sad but true...

If you're interested in brazilian music, you can e-mail me, ok?

    Peace, JussiK.
