This has to be Dennis Coffey. Just got his "Evolution" album this weekend with Scorpio on it and it is great stuff.

At the age of 13 he formed his first group, the Stingrays,
with two Detroit friends, Ollie Brown and Nate Watts.
His next band included such greats as Hamilton Bohannon and
Michael Henderson supporting stars as Gladys Knight, Stevie Wonder
and the Temptations.
Who am I talking about?

Wings of Fire always does it for me. One of the best ever Disco instrumentals.
Give me some Dennis Coffey (well the second, percussion lead half) Scorpio, Hamilton Bohannon Stop & Go or Donald Austin Crazy Legs back in the early '70s and I was in Funkin' heaven.
I´m sorry, Bernie, but it is not Dennis Coffey.
Clue: wanted person is not white and he enjoyed
his greatest successes with his band and as a solo
artist when recording for Arista.
C´mon now!

Was it George Benson???? :o
Is it Norman Connors? (& his band Aquarian Dream)
It sounds like Norman Connors, BUT my second guess would be Kevin Parlor..................
Gentlemen!
Pretty wild guesses so far.
I thought that ARISTA clue would do.
A heavily in demand session player in the 70s
