    Disco or Disco

    Hi All, here's a question

What would you say to the younger generation to get them to enthuse them about disco music and the whole scene.I know for a fact they like the music, but not the label of the dreaded D word. (not my sentiments). Got any killer thoughts that would draw them in our wonderful culture and create the next generation of afficianados?

    Thanks

Tell them that they can get disco ringtones or tell them that it has absolutely no melody or class & possibly rap it to them!

This is an easy question to answer. Anyone into House music will recognise many of the breaks and originals of so many House tracks out there at the moment.

I am still 'buzzing' from my gig tonight - word clearly got round North London and the pub where I play my 'Retro' sessions was humming! My usual 'old skool' pals were there, however there was a younger crowd including a lot of students - all nationalities and they, to coin a phrase 'got down and boogied'. When I had to turn everything off - at 12.05am due to the pathetic licencing laws in the UK I was applauded. 8) The key is to listen to House music and recognise the samples and play the originals, or have a retro session - NOT Bee Gees, or Gloria Gaynor but fast hard hitting tracks - Patrick Adams, Hamiliton Bohannon, Candido, Francine McGee (I played Delirium rather than Feeling Good and it was the right track) and when you think you might be losing them - Wild Cherry, Indeep and a bit of Donna Summer. It worked for me!!!

Don't underestimate 'em. They watch VH-1 Classic, and listen to the 'oldies' shows on the radio, so some of 'em know what they like. I once heard a girl who could'nt have been more than 19, singing 'Celebration' by Kool & the Gang. There's no way she could've heard it first time round.

Also the people who are using samples for certain pop/house songs these days are getting very lazy, and just sampling the whole choon instead of a part of it. Who did the recent hit song which is just basically the Steve Winwood's 'Valerie' re-released?

Basically, it´s the Valerie tune with a House/Electro beat...

The original is far superior, and could well be a hit today...

one way to get a younger crowd who knows almost nothing of real music into our stuff is to do what i did one time..if your spinning a private gig with all of their dance music of today..slip in some of our stuff in the mix. what i did once was slipped in giorgio's from here to eternity and cerrone's supernature to a techno/house crowd and they loved it! when i told them how old it was and what genre it was they thought i was joking and that it was some new stuff thats gonna be released soon  ill never forget that time.

You'll never be able to recreate the disco movement again, but you'd be surprised at how many youngsters like disco music (or at least recognize it).

A few years back I had an employee who was all of 21 and I remember her pulling up in our parking lot with Gloria Gaynor playing on her car stereo at eardrum-shattering volume. When she got out, I asked with surprise, "You like Gloria Gaynor?". She looked at me and replied, "I *LOVE* Gloria Gaynor! She's just the best!" I was floored. The future of planet earth isn't completely doomed musically...

How can young people not be aware of or like Gloria Gaynor or Kool & The gang's 'Celebration? They're hard to avoid! I'll start being happy when young people are loving Love Deluxe, Bionic Boogie or Le Pamplemousse!

Amen Miss Sandra! The real stuff..it all depends on if they get to hear it..best bet would be a modern club playing a night of "real" classics

hi all, and hi boogie badness we had some words by email a few months ago..

i created a party based on underground disco music in Paris. young people are fed with commercial and today's stuff. so how to bring them to the disco path ?

i d say that with lots of money, good ideas, good quality music, u can create something really astonishing on young audience. u need to impress them, that s all. i have everything except money...

at my last party, a guy came and said " i loved your electro set"... i told him i was playing 70s disco !! i do it in a big bar,

Clubs dont trust old music. the problem is on "artistic director" who watch their wallet instead of listening. when i come to do a proposal the first question is "how much people (=money) can u bring to my place?"...

u have to be very passioned by music not to give up...

    dont give up
    dont give up
    dont give up
    on your love
    (simon soussan orchestra...)

anyway i will keep on believe on my project...

    let's believe (cellophane)

discolady, how did you get the people to come to your party? Did you use flyers & if so did you describe your style as 70s disco? I'm just interested as I've never DJ'd in my life but would dearly love to use my record collection to introduce/convert young things to the glory that we worship i.e.disco! :P

how do i do?... well, u have to be very creative.
depends where u want to go with music.

go and see some venues in your place and check where u can play. if u dont play somewhere, u dont exist.. your collection would be sleeping in your living room if u dont spin somewhere in the public space. then communicate about it.

in my flyers i m very clear on the 70's style. my party is beginning (since april 2004..) slowly but surely.

the next one will be my birthday too : saturday 26th march @ Paris

 "I loved your electro set" they said? I def know that feeling and kinda the same thing as those kids I was talkin bout in my story thinkin that the Cerrone and Giorgio tracks must be new upcoming stuff LOL. Def keep spinning the classics over there and tryin to get this music out to todays dance audience and who knows...maybe someday they'll be hunting down old vinyl..or better yet, maybe we'll get to see this stuff on CD as the mainstream pop disco is

After playing tracks from Aquarian Dream "Look ahead", Azoto San Salvador", Chaka Khan "Any love" and Patrice Rushen "look up", a girl came up to me and said "are you just playing house music tonight?" To me a fantastic compliment to how contemporary the Disco sound really is

I always think of disco as being the musical eqivalent of James Dean. Because it died a premature & unnatural death it will be with us forever in spirit & will always be cool to new generations! 8) :D

Another testament to what I mentioned before: Some producers/DJs just sample a whole song and are lazy and not creative at all. I read a mag interview with Patrice Rushen a few years back, inwhich she said that no labels were interested in her new stuff, but they were happy to re-release or sample from her back catalogue and make money.

I agree, and i bet they didnt give Patrice any credits on the record for sampling her material. Crying shame but all the more reason to dust off the vinyl and play those all elusive original cuts that set people apart from the crowd. I guess is still cool to be kinda original.
