    Sandra Dee--Dead

The actress--not our serial poster from "Manchester, England, England, across the Atlantic sea!!!" .

Whenever I see the initials SD, I think of Sandra Dee--so I nicknamed "Steely Dan", Sandra Dee. When "Steely Dan" somehow couldn't post anymore using that name--he swtched to Bona Boy (no one liked that one, apparently)...so he recently was incarnated as SandraDee.

Then the Real Miss Dee Dies!!!! I saw her on film clips this weekend on the telly....and realized she must have died.

Sandra Dee was my passion before Miss Ross captured my heart. :D

She was a big star in the late Fifties-early Sixties; then just faded away into alcoholism and anorexia. Soooooo saaaaad.

Kate Bosworth plays her in the Bobby Darin biopic "Beyond The Sea"; Kevin Spacey annoys me --so I haven't seen it yet.

I could kick myself for not going to see her do "Love Letters" with former co-star John Saxon back in the late Eighties in Bev Hills. I saw Gena Rowlands & Ben Gazzara--BUT I shoulda gone back to see Sandy.

Sandra Dee was "perky" ; a teenage Doris Day, back when that was considered the Ideal.

I'd recommend "Imitation Of Life"---probably the best of her movies. "A Summer Place" is not bad either.

She is rather gushy--but I always thought she was really cute.

"Imitation Of Life" is a big ole soap opera about a white woman (Lana Turner) and her loyal maid, a black woman (Juanita Moore) and their troubles with their daughters (Sandra Dee & Susan Kohner).

I think Dee falls in love with mama's boyfriend (John Gavin); Kohner tries to "pass" for white; melodrama ensues.

Both Moore & Kohner were nominated for Supporting Actress Oscars. They didn't win.

Film was directed by auteur Douglas Sirk ("Written On the Wind," "Magnificent Obsession")...and is a big fave of the GAYS. (for the drama, the camp & the clothes!!!) :P

I don't know what u mean DD, 'canal street cruiser' indeed! :o You'd never catch me cruising on canal street; these days I do all my cruising behind Piccadilly train station.

The spirit of Sandra Dee lives on at Discomusic.com! I've always seen myself as a Doris Day type (Doris Gay? :-? )

That brilliant film from a couple of years ago with Julianne Moore & Dennis Quaid as her closeted gay husband, the title escapes me now, was a tribute to Douglas Sirk if I'm not mistaken? I remember reading that his films were very melodramatic & OTT.

Yeah, that was "Far From Heaven"; .....melodramatic and OOT..usually the leading man is GAY (ROCK HUDSON!!!); the producer of all those Sirk/Universal epics was big ole QUEEN Ross Hunter.

That's the one! I really enjoyed that film, it reminded of so many 50s films with the repressed sexuality & 'fraught' atmosphere. I expected Montgomery Clift to walk on at any minute!

The "inside" joke was to have the Husband realize he was "Gay" cause the Husband in most of those Fifties films was often played by GAY actors (Rock, George Nader, Jeff Chandler (Esther Williams said he was a drag queen!!!), Tab Hunter) pretending to be "Straight"

I assume that's Esther Williams the actress/swimmer & not the disco singer! I love Hollywood tittle tattle; i remember Ann Miller being interviewed on TV not long ago saying she was surprised when she first saw Marilyn Munroe in a movie as she knew her as a prostitute! (not the first hooker turned movie star I s'pose!)

Was Jeff Chandler really gay? I read he had two daughters.

    Bi perhaps

Actually I think everyone's a little gay even if they don't care to admit it.

I never thought Jeff Chandler was GAY...but Esther Williams, the swimmer, said he was at least. a cross-dresser. She did a movie with him "Raw Wind In Eden" and they had an affair. She said in her autobiography, that it was over when she came home one night and found him in total female drag!!!

Now he was a real butch guy...so that musta been some sight!!!

    I googled it:

"Williams' acid-induced vision produces the two other key events that turn up in this autobiography. The first we might call "The unveiling of the animus." She's in love with Jeff Chandler, the handsome leading man from the '50s. They are thinking about getting married. They're in his house. She's cooking supper. She goes upstairs to find, "Jeff was standing in the middle of the bedroom in a red wig, a flowered chiffon dress, expensive high-heeled shoes, and lots of makeup."

She screamed. And screamed. And screamed. "'Take that off! Take that all off now!' I yelled and started screaming again."

Most critics have taken this passage as a wonderful joke. What a laugh! Hunky Jeff Chandler, dressed in drag. The gossip columnists have had a field day with it. But it's a five-page scream, and it goes beyond normal terror. "I couldn't stop myself ... It's a scream that has no logic. It is sheer, uncontrolled panic. I just stood there in the center of the doorway and screamed. It was the kind of scream that ... has one tone to it. It doesn't go into any bars of music. It's not a movie star scream, but the kind you make when your mind shuts down."

What was it about Jeff Chandler in drag that created such an explosion in Esther Williams? She's no dummy. She has seen lots of strange sights in show biz. There was Johnny Weismuller: "Under the stage (out of the audience's sight) ... he'd whip off his trunks so I could see that he was beautifully equipped, and if he caught me, he'd try to get my suit off."

Or Morton Downey: "I had to listen to Morton Downey as I walked out onstage for each entrance ... in sotto voce, heard only by me, Morton spewed four-letter words, regaling me with graphic descriptions of what he would like to do on and to my body."

She's been hustled by countless stars and producers: Victor Mature, Billy Rose, Desi Arnaz. She's acted with dozens of boys: Mickey Rooney with his temper tantrums; Gene Kelly: small, petty and mercilessly cruel to her; Red Skelton crying because, in one sequence, he's going to have to shave his chest hair. What's different about this new vision is that she's fresh from her LSD experience, an extraordinarily powerful one. On acid, she saw herself in the mirror not only as a woman, but as a strong young man, whose "clumsy hand" touched her breast, as she "felt my penis stirring."

When Williams saw Jeff Chandler dolled up (high heels! chiffon dress!) she was, again, looking in the mirror, as she had on LSD -- but this time she saw something different. She saw before her Esther Williams -- a man in woman's clothing. And the vision scared the bejesus out of her.

Shortly after, she found a way to deal with it, for within months, she took up with actor Fernando Lamas. It was a marriage that was to last for 22 years. Like almost all of the men she was associated with, Fernando was a boy. But he had something different going for him. He was the kind of boy they call macho.

They made an agreement. They would have a perfect MGM married life. She knew those well, because she had acted them out in dozens of movies, with names like "Thrill of a Romance," "Neptune's Daughter," "Easy to Wed" and "Fiesta." The script was simple. There would be a beautiful husband, a beautiful housewife, a big house. Lamas wouldn't play around. He would be faithful. She'd play her part of a married woman. No children (she had children, but he didn't want them in the house; she complied.) She wouldn't make any movies, either. Fernando didn't like competition -- from within, or from without.

They do say that the majority of cross-dressing men are hetero! BTW, talking of outing actors, it isn't often I'm surprised when an actor is revealed as gay or bi but when I heard that Burt Lancaster hosted all-male 'pyjama parties/orgies' you could've knocked me down with a feather! :o I had him down as 100% hetero!
