And I always thought it was a dirge, just like his "The End (Assault on Precinct 13)". Now that you gave the bpm I realize I have no clue about this song. Time to hunt. :)Originally Written by markydefad
I listed this yesterday as one of my fave instrumentals.
I pulled it out last night and gave it a spin. Several, in fact.
I've never seen anyone else mention this 12"...so I wrote down the info from the label.
It's an import...looks like a bootleg...the label does have credits and a sorta smudgy "Varese Sarabande" is there.
"1997: FUGA DA NEW YORK" is the title.
(THE DUKE ARRIVES/THE BARRICADE/ THE PRESIDENT AT THE TRAIN) in parentheses.
Credited to John Carpenter in association with Alan Howarth
Tommy Wallace, , guitar solo on "The Barricade"
Extended version by Mario Boncaldo.
So I guess this is Italian?
It's very much in the dark, darker, darkest Giorgio Moroder-"Evolution" vein with some of the "Gimme Some Lovin"- "da-da-da-da--DAH" rhythm in there. I love this record!!! :D They played it at Trocadero. I've mentioned it here several times...but no one has ever commented.
Does anyone else know this record? :-?
Everytime I tried to download this for my mp3 collection in the old Napster days...I got a slow dirge that sounded nothing like the 12"... this track is around 134 bpm.
It's perfect for your Halloween Black Party!!! Even has a "SCREEEEEEEEEEEAM!!!" in it.
"Lost inside adorable illusion...."

FANTASTIC!!!!!
There is no doubt, that John Carpenter's film scores have influenced many current/post techno, rap, hip hop, dance etc. artists. Some of them like Afrika Bambaataa actually have said this. Assault on Precinct 13 also has a truly brilliant score, which has been much immitated/covered and sampled through the years. The score of his 1981 movie Escape From New York, was even better than the previous ones he'd done in association with Alan Howarth such as Halloween. Their version of DeBussy's "Engulfed Cathedral" certainly adds atmosphere to the scene inwhich it is placed. Carpenter undertook the writing chores of his films, in order to keep budget costs low.
Anyway enough waffle. As far as I know, there are many bootlegs and foreign pressings of his soundtrack for Escape... . A legit version came out on That's Entertainment Records in the '80s, so one has to be aware what one is buying:-
Have a look at these sites
http://www.musicfromthemovies.com/composer.asp?ID=173
On this site, there's even an LP by his group The Coup DeVilles

As for hearing that choon at the Troc., I think it's no coincidence that Carpenter cast Isaac Hayes in the movie...or wrote that theme for him...Or put chandelliers and Disco balls in his Duke mobile
So has anyone other than me actually heard this 12" mix?
It is Italian--the print is really small--but I checked that last night. "Made In Italy"
Disco Mix 12"
33 1/3 RPM
VIP 15068
72 VIP 15068-2L
6:37 timing/ 1982
Second side has no label--but it is a repeat of the 12" mix from side one.
Anyone else have this? :o :o :o :o :o :o :o
It has a great "cowbell"--so that may account for my passionate attachment.
"Lost inside adorable illusion...."

I don't think it's on any soundtrack; I could never find this version as a download. So I'm not sure what happened--if the mixer (Mario Boncaldo) took the movie soundtrack and added the beats or what. It is credited to Carpenter & Howarth.
I'm wondering if the Italians who frequent this site might remember this one? :-? :-? :-?
"Lost inside adorable illusion...."

I was thinking maybe Mario Boncaldo.....I did a google on him and he seems to have been prolific in the Italo Disco/House movement.
Couldn't find any info on the "Escape From New York" 12" however. :x
"Lost inside adorable illusion...."

From what Marky's saying, it would seem another artist made a disco version of the soundtrack theme, á la Meco Monardo's "Close Encounters", "Star Wars Theme", etc.
However, there are two facts we can't ignore:
1) John Carpenter used to compose and execute the music on his first films by himself.
2) That "Tommy Wallace" doing the guitar solo... couldn't he be Tommy Lee Wallace, the guy who did production design on the first Halloween movies and then went to direct the horrendous Halloween III? :o

3) I didn't think Halloween 3 was that bad.

"Lost inside adorable illusion...."
I saw GHOSTS OF MARS in DVD a few weeks ago and I couldn't help notice how amused Mr. Carpenter was in the bonus snippets of the recording of the soundtrack. Basically it was Buckethead, people from Anthrax and some other metal monsters grooving and expanding a simple Carpenter theme to a dangerous metal machine. John -which didn't allow to be interviewed for the "making off"- is seen grinning widely behind the recording table. Seemed more interested in this than in the shooting of the movie itself.
P.S.: you won't believe it, but Buckethead -the guy who played with Guns N'Roses some years ago- kept his face covered by his famous bucket for the session! :icon_confused:
It don't mean a thing (if ain't got that swing)
It's great to know others appreciate the music of John Carpenter. Along those lines, does anyone remember the disco theme to Friday The 13th part 3? I once had a 12" single of it (promo I think.)
Now thanks to YouTube--I can finally share the subject of this old thread from 2005....
Always loved this record....read the earlier posts.
