Does anybody remember the 92 KTU Battle Of The Disco DJs in NYC? This recording was taken off the airwaves in May 1982 and the dj is Hippy Torales. I think they say on the recording that he is from Newark, NJ. Anybody ever hear this dj or recall this event?

I don't remember the event but my all-time favorite DJ is Al Bandero.
When WKTU first switched format from easy-listening to disco, one DJ still remained from the easy-listening DJ staff.
Peter Alan Burchardt.
Poor guy! He was great for Percy Faith, Mantovanni, or Paul Moriat, but he just wasn't right for disco. He left soon after the transition--I hope he found another easy-listening station, which there aren't too many of left in the U.S.!
Do you remember the promotional short song for WKTU by the Sugarhill Gang that was modified from their "Rapper's Delight"?
" . . . disco station, of the nation, stereo 92 . . ."
yes, i remember this back in the days...it was contest called "battle of the dj's"...i taped many of them but unfortunately lost alot of my tapes...![]()
funky funky edits are a must!!!
Yes, Hippie was from the Newark area, he's still in the game, a much respected "old head" along with people like, DJ Camacho, DJ Punch, Humphries and others, There was a skating rink back in the 70's and 80's located in Elizabeth NJ called "Twin City" this place at it's peak, was the place to be, Hippie, Punch and others (can't remember anybody's name right now) would frequently show up there and sometimes even play for an hour. A lot of that early 80's club/dance sound was created here in Jersey, quite a few independent labels that had many well known hits, they used to refer to it as that "Jersey sound" There was Ace-Beat records, Movin' Records, Big Beat etc., and Hippie was probably involved to some degree with all of them, :icon_biggrin:
People outside the area, just consider it all a "NY" thing, but a lot of the magic came from the other side of the Hudson.....![]()
Those were great times![]()

Yeah, I know the event well...DJ Animal actually won the contest, although my personal favorite was Jim "Chopper Cohn". I have a snippet from the contest but have been looking for the rest of "Chopper's" mixes for ages now. So far no one has, or at least arent selling/giving them up.![]()

Dear ANYONE...
I just read this DiscoMusic.com forum posting from 2005 regarding Leroy's inability to find the version of the song "Rapper's Deight" by the Sugar Hill Gang with the Disco 92 customized ending.
I too remember it all too well, having probably recorded it off the air several hundred times myself, BUT, being so young at the time, stupid and an audio novice, I never really bothered to label or archive any of those hundreds of cassette tapes, and hence over the many years of moving, packing and unpacking, different cities and states, numerous apartments and eventually homes, they all seemed to have disappeared, whether being lost or destroyed...who knows.
However, my question?...in the three years since the original posting, has ANYONE ever located a copy of that "oh-sooooo-precious" recording? I would give practically ANYTHING to get a copy of that version of the song for my collection! It would be just such a coo after all these years to hear it again...AND HAVE IT to hear again and again!
Please let me know what became of this quest.
FYI - If by the time anyone reads this, they (you) still haven't been able to get a copy, and if by some stroke of supreme luck I do obtain a copy through my own endeavors, including scouring the bowels of the internet, I would be more than happy to send them (you) a copy just because I know what it's been like, painful and arduous to say the least, to be searching for this recording for well over 24 years!
I eagerly await any and all replies! Thank you.
Respectfully,
PJS

Since none of these special versions were ever, actually on vinyl, someone's home-taping is the only way you're gonna find it.
I've been searching and praying for 35 years to find a recording of the original "Soul Train Theme" version of "TSOP". One thing I do know, is that it is a complete version of the song. But it was never cut to vinyl. Just a radio-station type cartridge. And Don Cornelius was in the studio, when the song was recorded. So, it's possible those "Soul Train" lyrics are on the actual Master.
(I wish I could remember how I found that out, but it's been too many years to recall. And those synapses just ain't firing anymore!)
