Off the top o' me head...with very little thought, I'd pick
THAT'S WHERE THE HAPPY PEOPLE GO by The Trammps from early 1976.
:D  :P :o     8) :)
Hey guys,
not sure if we ever brought up this topic for discussion... but I wanted to ask our forum members:
What would be disco music's signature hit?
I mean what is the song that defined the era as a whole... what would you play for someone who didn't necessarily listen to it and or also someone that was born way after it passed?
My choice would be Sylvester's - You Make Me Feel (Mighty Real)
this is not my favorite song... however it does the job. :)

"Lost inside adorable illusion...."
Also The Trammps but "Disco Inferno-the long version"
I wouldn't have thought of "You Make Me Feel," but agree it just might be the ticket as it is accessible to just about any taste. I've known people who said they didn't like Disco make an exception to this song. If I think of another I'll post back.

I will Survive (not that I agree with this) G. Gaynor.
I would have to say "Never Can Say Goodbye" by Gloria Gaynor. Mainly because it's not just a classic disco song, but it has all of the elements a disco song should have: a good beat, a good melody, good vocals, and a good vibe. Plus it was released in 1974, the year disco music came to fruition as a genre.
"Everyone knows the real reason why you got that part it was the time you spent on that casting couch"--Antoine Merriwether
"Excuse me, Miss Thing, but both of us spent time on that couch"--Blaine Edwards
Well, I'm picking Cocomotion. Not just because I like it but it seems to get a reaction like, what is that...I've never heard something like that before...It's nice to hear something that isn't booming all the time... 8)
Find them and destroy them!
Right now I'm listening to Cheryl Barnes - Save and Spend, but back to the subject in hand and my pick would be..........
Chic - Good Times
I'm sure we could each come up with a Top Ten of signature songs. There are just so many that can qualify for that distinction but my choice would be
We Are Family -Sister Sledge
8) :P  :D![]()
Different eyes see different things. Different hearts beat on different strings. But there are times for you and me when all such things agree...Rush
If pressed for just one I'd pick..
"Turn the beat around" Vicky Sue Robinson, when ever I hear this song I'm transported back to a packed Disco.
I picked Sylvester's hit ....
1) because it was during the peak years 74-79.
2) the video had a mirror ball in it... with Sylvester doing his thing... not that it was gay ... but because he talks about being on the dance floor, we're feeling happy, sex & etc. etc.
I was going to plump for Vicky Sue, but thought it wasn't a big enough hit. So put her down for #2.Originally Written by Mixmachine
Difficult question - If I had to pick one it would be Feelin Good - Francine McGee.
[Memo to self - must listen to Turn the beat around - Vicky Sue Robinson tonight]
I would have to say "Le Freak" - Chic because it was released at the peak of the Disco phenomenum (bet I've spelt that wrong!) and, correct me if I'm wrong, was probably the biggest selling Disco record ever. :D
Le Freak was my #3 pick. I only decided against it 'cos I don't think it has weathered quite as well as Good Times and Good Times went on to spawn many imitators.
I came to think of Hot Shot by Karen Young. There's enough happening in the rhythm & vocals & lyrics to point out the main ingredients for a disco song.
I may change my mind later though.
I see where you are coming from Quinny but if you asked the "man in the street" to name one Chic tune (let alone one Disco tune) many would say "Le Freak", less so "Good Times".
Karlos: Maybe, but quite frankly, either of 'em does it for me.
Headlamp: In you, have we found the one person who preferred the A side of Francine McGee's opus, 'Delerium'?
Quinny,
Quite agree we're splitting hairs actually, both are great :D
However my own favourite Chic tune is neither of these it's "Everybody Dance" which is probably in my all time top 5 :D :D
It's quite strange that a group that had the biggest selling Disco record of all time in the Disco era, 5 top 20 hits? and produced at least half a dozen others aren't better known by the general public. Do I remember a less than brilliant assessment in Rolling Stone that Marky posted a few months back that described their output as more or less mediocre? Amazing!!!
That is why I said the Rolling Stone review that Marky posted a few months back was full-a-****. These guys are the dipshit rockheads that wore the "Disco Sucks" T-shirts. These are also the kinda a guys that couldn't get laid with a fist fulla 20s in a Tijuana whorehouse!
Find them and destroy them!
Hmmmm....that would be quite odd since my reviews have only applied to artists released up to the end of October, 1975.Originally Written by QUINNY
However, in the Donna Summer critical reassement, this was said:
"Her On the Radio--Greatest Hits Volume I & II belongs on your shelf, right next to Chic's greatest hits. Even if you don't dance: disco doesn't get any more listenable than this. "
I think Rolling Stone liked Chic a lot.
So I think you got that wrong.![]()
"Lost inside adorable illusion...."
May be not in your neck of the woods, but what else is new   Here Vicky was played in every club I ever visited, one of the few over exposed songs (back then)I could never get enough of..Originally Written by QUINNY
Another one that should be mentioned here is "Shame" by Evelyn King, this one is another tune that will always be associated with Disco dancing, the perfect fusion of R&B and Disco.
And yeah, it also made it to #1 in that pesky "American thang" Dic-o-La top 500 "Discotheque songs of the 70's"
My 2 choices;
1. Disco anthem.....'Love is the message' MFSB.
2. Disco track for disco virgins.......'Vertigo/Relight my fire' - Dan Hartman.
OMG-the army of Discohaters. What a bunch of losers was that! In Holland they had Gruppo Sportivo with "Disco really made it, it's empty and I hate it". It was the anthem of that army. Ever heard of those guys? No, I suppose. I always laughed at them, those were the people who were starting discussiongroups where they babbled for hours about one note (yes 1) on a Dire Straits song.Originally Written by paul
And then they went home, totally depressed or they came to a club and they were holding sit-ins on the dancefloor as protest against that despicable dancemusic.
And then they went home-bleeding coz' we were tired of their bullshit. :D
