Does anyone remember an artist by the name of Mick Jackson who did a version of "Blame It On The Boogie"??

Did this version get any club play as I am not familiar with it. Is it similar to Wacko Jacko's version?

NRG: It was more poppy than the Jackson's version, but it did get played and it did have its fans. Some people actually preferred it, so that possibly shows that it was by no means a pale imitation.
Sorta blue eyed soul versus the real deal, if you get my drift.

I have it on a 12" gold reissue (or something like that), with Weekend and Married Men on the flip side. Not bad. Always wondered who this guy was. :roll:

Mick Jackson was from Sheffield in the UK. He actually wrote "Blame it on the boogie". Both this and "Weekend" were Top 40 Pop hits in the UK.

I'd completely forgotten that he'd had a hand in writing it, but reading the article brought back some confusing memories. :oops:
Glad to see that he describes himself as 'blue eyed soul', but maybe, in one sense, I shouldn't have called the Jackson's version 'the real deal.' You know what I mean!

I actually have the original UK 12" release White Cover with Orange writing price 80p - I probably bought it thinking it was the 'real' Mick Jackson. It's a bit of a rip off as the track last for about 3 or 4 minutes and there is a lot of smooth black vinyl on it. I vaguely recall hearing it in some of the less 'out there' clubs in London.....it's not really 'my cup of tea'

Actually Mick came form Pontefract in Yorkshire. He wrote Blame it on the Boogie for Stevie Wonder originally and it was his dream he would record it - he was asked by Global records, Munich to release the track himself...at the Midem Music Festival in Germany in 1978 it was played for the first time with Mick singing.... a member of The Jacksons entourage was there looking for tracks and heard this - he secretly taped it and went back to the states to record it as quickly as possible before Micks version was released ruining the 'moment'. The master tape of micks version 'went missing' just hours before printing at the record factory was scheduled to begin then 'appeared' some days later....in which time The Jacksons had recorded thier upbeat version. There was then a race to release the tracks - it was called The Battle of the Boogie in the papers and was quite a good story - two Michael jackson - two versions of Blame it... - perfect newspaper material! The songs were out within days of each other - there were two camps - some prefered the uptempo and some prefered micks more souly version. It was good old fashioned record rivalry with no real antagonism - and both versions ROCK.

Both my Mick Jackson & Michael Jackson versions are in the box, at the back of my cupboard, behind my old amps & speakers. I.e the box filled with all the records that will only see the light of day once in a blue moon. The Michael jackson 12" is a huge disappointment, about 3 minutes long - a total rip-off IMHO. The Mick Jackson record does absolutely nothing for me and although he is the original artist, I don't think it is a particularly good track. I'm not a big fan of Weekend either which resides in the same box.

The version I have of Michael's "Boogie" is longer than 3 minutes.

Did Michael Jackson record a separate version of the song? I always thought it was a Jacksons recording, not a Michael Jackson one, even if he did sing lead. There is an extended mix, which is around 7 minutes if I recall correctly. There was also a 12" remix of Shake Your Body from the same Jacksons LP, which was the flip to 'Blame..'.

I actually met Mick Jackson when I worked at HMV Brighton in 1998. He seemed a really nice guy. At the time he said he was writing and recording a new album and going more mod. He bought a number of different styles of CD's to research. Never heard anything of releases after that though.

There is a TV doc about Mick Jackson on Channel 4 on Fri 26th Feb 2010 at 7.30pm called "The Other Michael Jackson". Apparently it's very good. Info on mickjacksonmusic.com along with info about the re-release of his 1978 debut album.
