    FEMALE DJS

About a month ago, someone mentioned a discotheque scene in a late '60s film, where there were two women DJs 'mixing' (erm, playing records back to back) records.

I personally didn't come across any female DJs in all my years as a jock, except in London, where there might be the odd one who dabbled at DJing to a very exclusive clientele who inhabited very cliquey, ultra monied, members' clubs.

Were there any that you knew of back in the day?

    Women DJs

Bert Lockett played for a while early on at the great club Better Days before getting in trouble there; she then became a mobile DJ. The NY club Sybil's had a female DJ in the late 70s. Sharon White had gigs playing at Plato's Retreat, The Saint, and on Fire Island. If I recall correctly, our own Boodika was a mobile DJ. But far and away, it was mostly men.

I only know of one female Dj here in the South Florida area, I believed she worked at a club in Ft Lauderdale (north of Miami)called Pete & Lenny's when it first opened around '77, never heard much about her through the 80's, sadly I don't recall her name, even a local Lesbian club had male Djs.

Alicia "I Love The Nightlight" Bridges was a club jock for many years in Atlanta.

We have a few here in New Orleans but they are fairly recent.

Most if not all of the lesbian clubs/bars in NYC employed female dj's, if they had one, and with good reason. Many of the male gay bars didn't like/want/allow women. Scared of what I don't know. They couldn't hang with us --- why employ us?

My friend Diane (Rhoades) was a dj in Asbury Park, NJ, for at least 10 years, probably longer. A lady named Chris (don't know the last name) would play Sunday Tea at The Ring (a/k/a The Cockring) on Christopher Street in NYC. Female jocks were far and in between but they were out there.
