    Hi,

this week I'm listening to some CDs my friends gave me recently. My dear friend BLAXMAN, an active member of this FORUM, recorded a superb CD for me, filled with instrumental versions of classic FUNK songs. Here's the list of the songs:

    JOE BATAAN - RAP-O-CLAP-O (instrumental)
    DEODATO - NIGHT CRUISER
    DEODATO - UNCLE FUNK
    SUN - WE'RE SO HOT
JIMMY ROSS - FIRST TRUE LOVE AFFAIR (instrumental)
RAY PARKER JR. & RAYDIO - STILL IN THE GROOVE
FRANCE JOLI - GONNA GET OVER YOU (instrumental)
    BROTHERS JOHNSON - LET'S SWING
EARTH, WIND & FIRE - LET'S GROOVE (instrumental)
    DIRECTORY - MONDAY
CON FUNK SHUN - MISS GOT THE BODY
CHARADES - GIMME THE FUNK (instrumental)
L.A. BOPPERS - GIMME SOME OF YOUR LOVIN'

Well, thank you BLAX for this fantastic CD you gave me!

Other friend of mine, EDUARDO SIMÕES, a member of our little groovy fraternity SENHORES DO GROOVE and a fantastic DISCO DJ (I wish you know the guy, he's fantastic), recorded a CD for me with some DISCO selections. Here they are:

PAINEL DE CXONTROLE - BLACK COCO
BLUE MAGIC - WE'RE ON THE RIGHT TRACK
ACE SPECTRUM - KEEP HOLDIN' ON
MASS PRODUCTION - TURN UP THE MUSIC
    T. CONNECTION - DISCO MAGIC
7TH WONDER - MY LOVE AIN'T NEVER BEEN THIS STRONG
    GREY & HANKS - DANCIN'
    HOT CITTY - FEELIN' LOVE
RITCHIE FAMILY - I'LL DO MY BEST
    TASHA THOMAS - SHOOT ME
    GREY & HANKS - NOW I'M FINE
    ROBERTA KELLY - FUNKY STARDUST
LOVE DE LUXE - HERE COMES THAT SOUND
BRAINSTORM - WAKE UP AND BE SOMEBODY

Fantastic selections don't you think? My friends are really something, you must believe me!

    Peace,

    Well,
the lousy typewriter strikes again! The name of the brazilian DISCO group is PAINEL DE CONTROLE, the name of the groovy song, BLACK COCO.

Fantastic taste from the land of the Copacabana!!!  You guys really are the best !!!

Especially BLUE MAGIC - We're On he Right Track. That is what I call REAL quality. Their lead singer and harmonies were exquisite!! What a great band they were - I've got 2 of their 7-inch singles from 1974 - and that's it!

GREY AND HANKS - that was always an under
estimated record in the UK. It deserved better.

And as for DISCO MAGIC. I haven't heard that in ages - and, boy, does it bring back memories! Very early memories for me!

I don't know any of those instrumentals, but I bet they sure are funky!!

Hi JAZZ, thanks for your kind words. I will pass your compliments for our fellas SENHORES DO GROOVE. I was a collector of soul and funk for almost 2 decades when I met these guys and let me tell you - I though I knew lots of things but they show me lots of records that I didn't know or remember. They are truly great.

You're right about BLUE MAGIC - they are well known for their exquisite, beautiful ballads, but they recorded some groovy stuff too - what about FUNK-N-STEIN? The guys have class and their records still sound beautiful after ALL THESE YEARS.

About T. CONNECTION - this is one of EDUARDO's favorite tracks, and he played it on some of our SENHORES DO GROOVE parties. I like T. CONNECTION too.

    Peace.

Let me just say you are a lucky man to be affiliated with such knowledgeable friends. Great CD's, both of them. Blax and I have the same taste so it doesn't surprise me that he has some of my faves on there from Jimmy Ross and France Joli, but when it somes to Sun, I really love this band. Also, Rap-o-clap-o by Joe Bataan, wow!. The disco CD is also hot and I agree with Jazz about Grey & Hanks. 'Dancin' is one of my all-time faves so you had me hooked there, but there are some other fantastic tracks on this disc. Lord knows I would love to be at a Senshores de Groove party. Between the funk and disco played, I'd be in heaven. Great stuff here.

    Sammy and Jazz,

would be great if both of you could be in a "SG" party. Zeca and I have been talking about it some days ago. Saddly it is just a dream. The life is hard and the money short, uh!
At least we have a virtual way to share our experiences. Thanks to Bernie again!
I'm really feel me touched by you, friends! And I'm thankfull for what I learn with you here, be sure.

    Peace.

All I will say is never say never. As I stated before, I am also a student of martial arts and I also have dreamed of going to Brazil to visit with true practitioners of Brazilian Jiu-jitsu or see true Vale Tudo live; Never thinking great music was also being played there. Senshores de Groove is just another reason to go. I can see me taking a vacation someday with my wife to the beautiful beaches of Brazil. Never say never.

I've never studied Capoeira, however, I am aware of this art and find it fascinating. What I especially like is the music that is played while practitioners of Capoeira are performing in their "Jinga". The drums and that string instrument, don't know what it is called, is very engaging. Brazil seems to have so much to offer, not to mention the worlds greatest soccer team. I am curiously following the World Cup now that the U.S. team is performing so well. I imagine this is big in your country right now. Music, martial arts, sports, what else can we ask for. Life is good.

Oh Yeah!!! World Cup is shaking the whole country here!!

The Capoeira instrument is called "berimbau". Pronounced: bay-reem-BAH-oh. See, it's easy!
Sometimes I think. If the guys stop to play the berimbau, the fight stops?!?

    Peace, friend.

    P.S. I've just e-mailed you, ok?

Hey SAM, thanx for your kind words about our country. I hope you visit us very soon, you'll surely love our people and our culture. Oh, and our parties too! BTW, the name of the string instrument is BERIMBAU. Capoeira was a dance invented by afro-americans on the time of slavery here in Brasil. They practiced it to look like a dance to the eyes of the white people, but it was a martial art, as you know. They use CAPOEIRA to run from captivity, from slavery.

    Peace, mr. SAM.
